She's off on another dramatic monologue, telling me about her new boyfriend. "Edgar, he loves me, you know, he call me mamacita . He want me to be the mother of his children someday, OK? I ain't no slut. Mira , I don't need to use no condom with him." Even the way she dresses is a form of urgent communicationthe plunging neckline of her tropically patterned blouse, whose tails knotted above her waist also expose her flat stomach, the skin-tight denim jeans, the gold, four-inch hoop earrings, and the necklace with her name spelled out in cursive with tiny sparkling stones. Her black hair is pulled back tightly, except for a small squiggle greased flat against her forehead in the shape of an upside-down question mark. On World AIDS Day, remember the many lives, hopes lost
By Dr. Rafael Campo
Dec. 1 is another World AIDS Day. I'm tired.
I'm tired of diagnosing young men and women with the disease, tired of hearing about side effects from the antiviral medications we should be glad we have, tired of remembering so many friends and patients long dead of AIDS.
I have other good reasons to feel tired, too. I live in a nation where we are told constantly that we have something infinitely more dire to face, a terrible, all-consuming menace that really could strike any one of us at any moment: terrorism. The generally inept Bush administration does a good job in perhaps this one respect: scaring the American people.
The truth is that the entire world, of which lately we sometimes seem to forget we are a part, faces a threat of far greater proportions, and it is one that we can actually conquer and, better yet, not with bunker-buster bombs and rabid enmity, but instead with medicine, education and compassion.
World AIDS Day asks us to remember that more than 42 million people across the globe suffer from HIV and AIDS. Each day, 15,000 more contract the disease. Without the kinds of treatments that we are so fortunate to have at our disposal here in America and in Western Europe, most of these people will die, joining the 28 million lives already lost to the epidemic. Less than 2 percent of those infected had access to these treatments by the end of 2001, according to a U.N. report. Almost all of the ones getting the treatments were in the West.

AMHERST, Mass.—Poet and physician Rafael Campo, a 1987 graduate of Amherst College, will discuss “Medicine and Humanities: the Liberal Arts and Medical Education in the 21st Century” in the Cole Assembly Room in Converse Hall at the college on Thursday, March 7, at 7 p.m. Campo will read his own poetry and reflect on the influence the liberal arts had on his training as a doctor. His talk, sponsored by the Charles Drew Pre-medical Society at Amherst College, is free and open to the public. Rafael Campo “listens to the sounds the body makes, but what he hears is poetry,” according to the Chronicle of Higher Education . David Abel in the Boston Globe noted that “Campo himself has long turned to writing as a means of coming to terms with his dual role of living in the mainstream wearing a white coat and being a gay Cuban American.” Since graduating from Amherst and receiving his medical degree at Harvard in 1992, Campo has written four books of poetry:

Your concentration while you're shucking them
Is fierce; they fight against your prying blade,
As if intent to guard some plumbless gem Of truth. I squeeze some fruit for lemonade; The yellow rinds become a fragrant pile. More scraping from the deck, a stifled curse— You bring me one, the frilly muscle pale, Defeated, silent in its briny juice Like sweat expended in the effort to Remain inviolate. I slurp it down, One dose of aphrodisiac, and you Return to your grim work, all Provincetown Draped out below you, edge of the known world. I see what is left: bone-white, hollow-shelled. Rafael Campo teaches and practices general internal medicine. He is author of The Other Man Was Me , which won the 1993 National Poetry Series Award, and of What the Body Told , which received a Lamba Literary Award for Poetry.
