Campion, Thomas (1567 - 1620)
The English poet, composer and doctor Thomas Campion established his reputation as a poet in the 1590s and published his first songs in 1601. He wrote and composed masques for royal entertainment, particularly after the succession of King James of Scotland to the throne of England as James I, and was unusual in that he wrote both words and music for his many songs with lute accompaniment. Vocal Music Campion's musical legacy consists entirely of some 119 lute-songs. Many of these were published in a series of four Bookes of Ayres. They include the vivid "Fire, fire, fire fire loe here I burne, Never weather-beaten saile" and "Woo her, and win her, he that can", among a rich collection.

My influences included Works, commissioned by King James, allowed Campion to associate with many of England's artistic and aristocratic elite. . Born in London on February 12, 1567, to John and Lucy Campion, Thomas Campion was a physician, a composer, and a poet. His parents died while he was a child, and at the age of fourteen he and a stepbrother were sent away to Cambridge. Campion did not earn a degree at Cambridge, but he came into contact with writers such as 'Thomas Nashe' and 'Gabriel Harvey'. In 1586, he enrolled at Gray's Inn, a law school, where he performed in plays and masques. The facts of his life from this time until 1602 remain vague; in 1602 Campion entered the University of Caen and shortly thereafter, at the age of forty, took up a medical practice in London.
      His first published works were five songs, which appeared in 1591. Campion's first collection of poems

    Thomas Campion er mars 1620. Books of Airs Poemata (1595). Si ses Observations on the Art of English Poesie Follow Thy Fair Sun
      Follow thy fair sun, unhappy shadow ;
      Though thou be black as night,
      And she made all of light,
      Yet follow thy fair sun, unhappy shadow.
      Follow her whose light thy light depriveth ;
      Though here thou liv'st disgraced,
      And she in heaven is placed,
      Yet follow her whose light the world reviveth !
      Follow those pure beams whose beauty burneth,
      That so have scorched thee,
      As thou still black must be, Till her kind beams thy black to brightness turneth. Follow her while yet her glory shineth ; There comes a luckless night, That will dim all her light ; And this the black unhappy shade divineth. Follow still since so thy fates ordained ; The sun must have his shade, Till both at once do fade ; The sun still proved, the shadow still disdained. Thomas Campion, 1601

    THOMAS CAMPION
    CAMPION, THOMAS In 1607 he wroteand published a masque for the occasion of he marriage of Lord Hayes, and in 1613 he issued a volume of Songs of Mourning (set to Iusic by Coperario or John Cooper) br the loss of Prince Henry, which was sincerely lamented by the whole English nation. The same year he wrote and arranged three masques, the Lords Masque for the marriage of Princess Elizabeth, an entertainment for the amusement of Queen Anne it Caversham House, and a third for- the marriage of the earl of Somerset to the infamous Frances Howard, countess of Essex. Lf, moreover, as appears quite likely, his Two Bookes of Ayres ~both words and music written by himself) belongs also to this gear, it was indeed his annus mirabilis. Some time in or after 1617 appeared his Third and Fourth Booke of Ayres; while to that year probably also belongs his Wew Way of making Foure Parts -in Counter-point, a technical Lreatise which was for many years the standard text-book on the subject. It was included, with annotations by Christopher Sympson, in Playf airs Brief Introduction to the Skill of Musick, md two editions appear to have been. bought up by 1660. In f 618 appeared The Ayres that were swag and played at Brougham Castle on. the occasion of the kings entertainment there, the music by Mason and Earsden, while the words were aithost certainly by Campion; and ill 1619 he published his EpigraMma-turn Libri II. Umbra~ Elegiarum liber z~nus, a reprint of his 1595 collection with considerable omissions, additions (in the borm of another book of epigrams) and corrections.
