123. Florida Fishing – Stegbone’s Fishing Camp, Satsuma Florida
Cabins and docks on the St. Johns River. Accommodations, rates, and history.
http://www.stegbones.com/
Ever wonder where that place went where your grandfather first took you fishing, that place the boys at work talk about all year long before their annual spring trip, the one your neighbor describes to you over the back fence with the comfortable rocking chairs? I'll let you onto a little secret. . . here it is. Located in Welaka Groves , an old citrus farm on the east bank of the St. Johns River midway between the Oklawaha and the barge canal, the camp was originally set up by Bob Allender in 1946. Allen Norton acquired it in 1972 and it became Norton's Place. Jim and Terry Stege purchased it in 1998, and after a lot of cleaning, repairs, renovation and a good amount of TLC, the place became Stegbone's Fish Camp. Today Stegbone's delivers the same type of traditional, quality, get-away experience as the camp offered from its very beginning. It is a vintage Florida fish camp - no RVs, no jet skis, no attitudes. Just great fishing, plenty of eating, beautiful sunsets, campfires, wildlife all around and a whole lot of story telling!
Nearly a century ago
, Stegbones' dock was built for shipping citrus down the St. John's. The

124. An Extraordinary American Civil War Shipwreck
The Maple Leaf was one of the untold numbers of mundane, everyday workhorse steamboats. But that was changed when her wreck, filled with the personal belongings and camp equipment of three regiments of typical Civil War combat soldiers, was found at the bottom of the murky waters of the St. Johns River.

An Extraordinary American Civil War Shipwreck
Jacksonville Florida 1864
Click on the picture to continue the Wreck of the Maple Leaf is unsurpassed as a source for Civil War material culture. The site combines one of the largest ships sunk during the war, carrying all the worldly goods of more than a thousand soldiers, with a river bottom environment that perfectly preserved the ship and cargo. It is the most important repository of Civil War artifacts ever found and probably will remain so. Considered among Florida shipwrecks, Maple Leaf is probably the best preserved site in Florida.....

View Our Video Tour Dear Traveler,
If you've been looking for an unforgettable vacation in the US Virgin Islands, where tree frogs and hummingbirds feel just as comfortable as you do, in a pristine, natural setting, you have come to the right web site. Less than a three hour flight from Florida, or three and a half from NYC, in the Caribbean's gorgeous US Virgin Islands National Park, Maho has its own secluded, white sand beach, and plenty of water sports like sailing, scuba, wind surfing, and snorkeling for active guests. There's also lots of peace and quite for those who simply want to enjoy the natural surroundings in thousands of unspoiled acres.
When Maho Bay Camps opened in 1976, the term ecotourism didn't even exist. Environmentally sensitive travelers usually had to "rough it" to be close to nature. My idea was to provide intimacy with the great outdoors, in the US Virgin Islands (where English is spoken), one of the world's most beautiful settings, with comfort and convenience, at low cost.
Maho Bay Camps proved to be so popular that we now have three sister resorts: Harmony Studios, Estate Concordia Studios and the Concordia Eco-tents. All four are based on the same idea, creature comforts for all creatures. Each facility on St. John (the least populated of the US Virgin Islands) has its own comfort level, from basic to more luxurious. Each is built on the same philosophy; that environmental sensitivity, human comfort and responsible consumption are all compatible and can also enhance your vacation experience.

Why burn the place down?
One Man's Web
Politics and Ethics Australia and the Refugees There has been great outrage in the popular press about the spate of fires in the Australian Concentration Camps. Pictures by Nicholson Why would they do such a thing? Perhaps Mr Howard and the right wing press, so hurt by refugee's lack of thanks should go back to Shakespeare; the Merchant of Venice, Act 111 Scene 1. Salarino says to Shylock of Antonio's losses: "Why, I am sure, if he forfeit, thou wilt not take his flesh: what's that good for?" And Shylock replies: Put bluntly, Mr Howard, if you treat people like shit, shit you will get. Refugees are people, not something less, and yet this is how we treat them.
Pictures by Nicholson

Apart from a few, the media's reporting of the events has been a disgrace. No here did one hear of refugees driven to despair. Although a few ringleaders were identified as not being Middle eastern, no one felt it worth commenting beyond that. Self satisfied and sleek glossy women spoke on the TV news about the people burning " our detention centres" as though they were places of pride, not a cause for shame. God bless the refugees for giving the places the treatment they deserved.
