Biographical Sketch of the Creator of the Collection John Newbold Happy Camp was born in Enid, Oklahoma, on May 11, 1908. After attending elementary and secondary schools in Blackwell and Douglas, he graduated from Waukomis High School. Afterwards, Camp attended Enid's Phillips University before beginning a career in banking. Eventually he rose to the presidency of the Waukomis State Bank. Long active in civic affairs, Camp headed the Great Salt Plains Boy Scout Council. He also served on the governing boards of the Oklahoma State Fair, the Oklahoma Chamber of Commerce, and the Christian Church Foundation. Blessed with a most agreeable name (among other things, it allowed his campaign workers to style themselves "Happy Campers"), Camp entered elective politics in 1942. Except for the very worst years of the Dust Bowl, Oklahoma's northwestern corner had been Republican ever since its settlement by Kansas wheat farmers. Camp's election as a Republican to the state legislature in 1942 signaled the area's return to form. It was also the first of his ten elections to one of Garfield County's two slots in the state house of representatives. Leaving the legislature after 1962, Camp sought the Republican gubernatorial nomination in 1966 but lost a runoff to State Senator

This selection of photographs comes from an exhibition entitled "Fish Camp", a personal documentary completed in 1989. These large format black and white photographs depict two closely related fish camps on the St. John's River near Osteen, Florida, and the people living and working there.
The images from Fish Camp are pure Americana, human interest photography which captures the souls of the people and the moment in time.
More importantly, the images express humble values which some of us still hold in high regard: a simple lifestyle in rhythm with the environment where common sense is the rule of order. However fleeting, these values and the 'Old Florida' of my childhood, and my ancestors, still exists.
All photographs were taken with a Crown Graphic 4x5 camera and are available as Fine Art Giclee prints.

65. Camp Smalltalk CS3 (OOPSLA 2000)

Camp Smalltalk (OOPSLA 2000) Sunday
OOPSLA 2000 (a SmalltalkFest in disguise).
It's coming the Squeak BOF Tuesday 8:30-10pm Room 208 A,B,C,D. Don't be late.
Greetings, it's late 1:00AM Tuesday morning, not that's unusual for your scribe. This time around I've decided to post early, so let the story begin. For other stories see Camp Smalltalk CS2 or OOPSLA 1999
Here are some pictures that I took at OOPSLA 2000.
http://www.eg.bucknell.edu/~zaccone/OOPSLA-2000/

also some from Ian http://www-sor.inria.fr/~piumarta/OOPSLA-2000/ and Donald http://users.erols.com/dmacq/oopsla1.htm Monday Oct 16th 2000 Tuesday Oct 17th 2000 Wednesday Oct 18th 2000 ... Thursday Oct 19th 2000
Sunday Oct 15th 2000 It's morning it's really early, in fact the sun isn't up here in Minneapolis. In fact it is so early I'm number one in the line for 'M's. Does that give some clue to the excitement building for OOPSLA and Camp Smalltalk? As I scan the Program guide looking for clues for what's hot, what's new, and what's exciting, what do I see. Well one of our Smalltalk campers is giving a presentation on JWARS, another is talking about GLORP, and another is talking about the ANSI test suite. Yet another is talking about Swazoo and rounding out the impact of Squeak on the community is the NetUnify.com folks talking about their work with Swikies.
Quite an impact the Smalltalk community is having on the show even if we don't get star billing. Who is doing the fun stuff, and didn't we do byte code prediction 20 years ago?

How about leap tall buildings in a single bound? If so, Electronic Arts and Crave Entertainment have the game for you. 'Freedom Force' the new superhero RPG for the PC is a comic book fan's dream come true. 'Freedom Force' is set in the crime-ridden, thug-infested metropolis of Patriot City circa 1962. In his bid to enslave planet Earth, the galactic warlord Lord Dominion has scattered canisters of the super power-inducing Energy X throughout Earth's urban areas in the hopes of creating super villains who will annex the planet for him. Yep. You guessed it. For an all-powerful, interstellar conqueror, Lord Dominion is sure one lazy son-of-a-gun. Throwing a wrench in Lord Dominion's plans is the renegade alien known simply as Mentor. Patriot City becomes the scene of a interstellar chess game as Lord Dominion assembles his menagerie of miscreants and Mentor seeks courageous and virtuous humans to thwart his nefarious plan.

BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH
John Calhoun Birdwell, son of Allen and Luinda Ross Birdwell, was born in Lawrence County, Alabama on April 7, 1829. By 1845 the family had moved to Rusk County, Texas, where Allen Birdwell served as a State Representative to the Texas Legislature from 1853 to 1854 and from 1863 to 1864. In 1849 John C. Birdwell married Adaline Burney Cunningham, and they resided a number of years at Mount Enterprise, Rusk County before moving to Flatswood, Nacogdoches County shortly before the Civil War. John served in Company H of the 17th Dismounted Cavalry and was captured at Arkansas Post on the Arkansas River. He died on January 6, 1869. A farmer, John Birdwell included instructions for running the farm in his absence in his letters written to his wife during the Civil War. Her letters report the progress of crops and livestock. The letters of both recount their hardships during the war as well as news of family and friends. Birdwell describes Confederate camp conditions depicting disease epidemics, food, music, gambling, funerals, weather, and ragged condition of the troops. He was not a slave holder and waxes bitter about the slave owners causing the war then paying substitutes to fight for them. Most of his letters were written from Camp Nelson and Camp Hope, Arkansas and contain an underlying refrain about the unreliability of mail service during the war.

For a comprehensive list of links to all those with sites about BRC 2000, check out Moorlock's page on the Official Site. For now, comon in and enjoy.
