Make the effort, to heck with the results!
"Results are secondary, effort is prime!" That, in a nutshell, is the John Wright philosophy. The Kiwi veteran of 82 Tests is obviously out to make a difference. And his guiding mantra is it doesn't matter where you are, the most important thing is to know where you are headed. That mindset makes for a very radical coaching camp where expect the unexpected seems to be the motto. Like the other day, when Wright got all 25 probables to get together in the team hotel, where he had arranged a special screening of Remember the Titans, courtesy Columbia Pictures. Like the time John Wright bundled the probables into a team bus, got them driven to the popular Fishermen's Cove resort, on the Mahabalipuram road.Once there, he got the players into a huddle, and asked: 'What are the values this team wants to follow? Does this team have a vision? What does this team want to do? Where is this team headed?' "We were split into three groups," a player describes what followed. "And each group was asked to discuss these questions and come up with their own answers. We had to define goals, we had to give ourselves a sense of direction. We were then asked how we wanted to make practice more interesting and more meaningful. All of us, each player, had to make presentations on what we wanted to do in this team, and with this team. "In earlier camps we would get to the ground, bat, bowl, field, do things in a haphazard, unplanned fashion. All that has changed," the player elaborates. "Under John, nothing is haphazard, everything is planned, everything has a goal. We are made to understand what we are doing at all times, made to set ourselves small-term and long-term goals. His policy is that everything we do should have a purpose, that each day's practise should have a goal, the camp itself should have a larger goal, and the team should have its own goals for the future that we are supposed to work towards."

About the Author When and where was John Sandford born? John Sandford was born John Camp on February 23, 1944, in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.
His real name isn't John Sandford? No. His real name is John Roswell Camp. When it became apparent that Rules of Prey and The Fool's Run were going to come out three months apart, Putnam asked him to come up with a pseudonym for Rules of Prey , as they didn't want Henry Holt (the publisher of The Fool's Run ) to ride on their publicity. Sandford is his paternal grandmother's maiden name, and he chose that.
When did he start writing? He started writing in grade school, although his first real encouragement came in his senior year in High School, when an English teacher told him that he had a nice talent for it.
Did he major in writing (in some form) in college? Not at first. He went to the University of Iowa and graduated in 1966 with a degree in American Studies. He wrote a few articles for the school newspaper, but didn't get seriously involved in journalism until he was in the army.
What did he do in the army?

Experience : Collectively, the coaches at our camp have over 50 years of coaching experience at the college or high school level. They also have over 25 years of collective coaching experience at diving camps, which is a claim that not many camps can make. While many camps use college divers that have little coaching experience, we pride ourselves on the expertise that we can provide to our camp participants. Enthusiasm : Our coaching staff is known for their enthusiasm during practice and other camp activities. This enthusiasm "rubs off", which results in a fun practice environment. The fun often continues into the evening during activities such as volleyball, movie night, dance night, and the world famous lip sync/skit night. Genuine devotion: Everyone involved with our camp shares a common bond. We are all devoted to the sport of diving. We believe that our efforts help promote and perpetuate a sport that provides many positive experiences to its participants.

CAMP, JOHN LAFAYETTE (1828-1891). John Lafayette Camp, soldier and political leader, was born on February 20, 1828, near Birmingham, Alabama, the son of John Lay and Elizabeth (Brown) Camp. In 1848 he graduated from the University of Tennessee, and the following year he moved to Gilmer, Upshur County, Texas. There he taught school, became a prosperous cotton planter, and established himself as one of the leading attorneys of East Texas. In 1851 he married Mary Ann Ward, the daughter of William Ward, a well-known physician. The couple eventually had five children. When the Civil War qv began, Camp was first elected captain of a company and then colonel of the Fourteenth Texas Cavalry. The regiment served in Texas and Arkansas in the early months of the war but was later transferred east of the Mississippi River to the Confederate Army of Tennessee. There the regiment was consolidated with the Tenth Texas Cavalry, Dismounted, and assigned to Mathew D. Ector's qv brigade. Camp saw action at the battles of Richmond and Cumberland Gap, Kentucky; Murfreesboro (Stone's River), Tennessee; and Chickamauga and Altoona, Georgia. He was twice wounded and twice captured.
