(Camp Chico)
This camp, originally called Camp Chico, was established at Chico, Butte County, by Captain Samuel H. Starr with Company F, 2nd California Cavalry on August 15, 1863, and by Company A, 6th California Infantry , on August 26, 1863. Company I, 2nd California Cavalry also garrison the post. Available post returns are dated from August 1863 to May 1865.
"In 1864 and 1865 there were quite a number of persons sent to Fort Alcatraz from Butte County. There was one who when Lincoln was assassinated, made very filthy remarks about Lincoln and preached Jeff Davis. When Captain Doty, who was in command of the soldiers at Chico, heard of his remarks he detailed three men to bring the man to camp. This man had always made his boast about what he would do if the soldiers tried to get him and packed a large Colt revolver. The soldiers rode to his home and asked for him. His daughter said he was on the plains looking after his stock. They rode away and soon saw a man on horseback. They rode up and one said, "Is your name Stewart."
He said, "Yes," and about that time he was looking in the barrels of two carbines. One rode up and took the revolver. They then tied his feet under the horse's belly and led him to camp. He was sent to Alcatraz for three months."

DELICATE "petals" were tossed up in the air, but instead of falling to the ground, they fluttered away. But then "petals" were butterflies released by the hundreds to mark the opening recently of the Butterfly Sanctuary at Camp John Hay (CJH), Baguio City.
The sanctuary's inauguration coincided with that of the Art Park, located at the end of the Eco-Trail that passes through a forest of Benguet pines, all maintained by CJH to enhance the place's claim as a choice ecotourism destination.
Overseeing the multifaceted project is Jill Cortes, assistant vice president for corporate communications. The Butterfly Sanctuary, she says, will be a permanent attraction, open the whole year round.
On the other hand, the Art Park, located right in front of the CJH's communication office, will be a seasonal offering, featuring works by artists and artisans, mostly from the Cordilleras, like Narda Capuyan and her looms and furniture, foot and mouth and other artists and wood carvers from the region.

... Global Nation Baguio mayor shuts door
to Camp John Hay casino

By Vincent Cabreza
Inquirer News Service
BAGUIO CITY With Camp John Hay again central to the political battle for Baguio mayor this year, reelectionist Mayor Bernardo Vergara surprised critics by declaring that a proposed Camp John Hay casino will not operate "while I am still mayor." Responding to a question from the Inquirer during a public presentation of the city's candidates, Vergara said he would not issue any business permit to Royal Highlands Gaming and Leisure Corp., which proposed to manage a state-run casino. The turnabout pre-empted the crusade of Vergara's rival, Councilor Braulio Yaranon, and surprised even the developer of Camp John Hay. Lawyer Georgina Alvarez, Camp John Hay Development Corp. (CJHDevco) senior vice president for legal affairs, said the company had "learned to live" with the political attacks that were hurled at it during elections. She said since CJHDevco president Robert John Sobrepena was put on the limelight for allegedly building a 40-million-peso log cabin for deposed President Joseph Estrada, the developer had been vulnerable to almost all political exercises.

My trip to Camp John Marc
by Sareth Garcia, Parent, Edinburg, Texas At 10:00 p.m. we arrived in New Braunfels so we stopped to eat a hamburger, but my mother was preoccupied about the car. For this reason, we decided to call my sister who lives in McAllen. We explained what had happened and asked if her husband, who is a mechanic, could pick us up in a wrecker. They were distressed because they did not want the car to be stranded as it could easily be stolen. At 11:00 a.m., we started the trip all over. Arriving at 4:00 p.m., it was a good feeling to be welcomed. They immediately showed us to our cabin and the dining room. There I was separated from my little Omar. Let me tell you that at this camp, they take good care of the children and their siblings. Believe me when I say that I had never left Omar except with his grandparents. But the camp staff gained my confidence and trust so that he did not sleep with me for two nights! This was a great break for me. Now let me tell you about the camp. The same night we arrived, we were immediately directed to the General Membership Business Meeting where the Nominees for Board Positions were discussed. After that, there was an auction at 9:00 p.m which I did not attend, but my mother did. By this point, my legs were hurting from tiredness since I was not able to sleep one night and drove for almost two days.

ABOUT US CONTACT US OUR PHILOSOPHY ... Search for another speaker John Newcombe Category: Tennis In brief John Newcombe has always been more than a tennis legend - he is an Australian icon. As a player, he was the world number one, a multiple Wimbledon, US and Australian Open champion, a fighter who would push himself to the limit and beyond to win. Yet he never (or almost never) lost his sense of humour or fun. You could tell he loved playing the game, and that made watching him all the more enjoyable. Fee Range: Please contact us for fee info
John Newcombe has been friends with US presidents and media tycoons. George Bush, Sr once described him as a 'black-belt beer drinker', and his son, George W had one too many with Newk on the night when George W got arrested for drunk driving. John Newcombe is also at home in the pub having a beer or three with his mates. He's a larrikin, but he is also a hugely successful businessman in his own right. He cares passionately about his family and his country. And in a sport where individualism, not to say outright self-centeredness, is the norm, he believes that playing in, or captaining a team in the Davis Cup is the greatest thing a tennis player can achieve. As a mentor and inspiration to many players, John Newcombe has been a crucial influence on the new generation of Australian champions.

Course Reviews Course Name Camp John Hay Golf Course Location Baguio City, Philippines Comments from W. Wilson Shamekday, San Francisco, California, USA Situated at 5000 ft. in a former US Air Force R and R base. Beautiful manicured fairways and large, lush, lightning fast greens. The numerous pine trees and hilly terrain will test your shot-making ability. Disappointing 6th hole though. Carts are available. About USD 50 for green fees and USD 10 for caddy. The cool temperature and incredible scenery is reason enough to play this course.
September/00 Comments from Mike Malinowski, Makati, Metro Manila, Philippines I have played 32 courses in the Philippines and my favorite and believe me picking a favorite course in golf-mad Philippines is a hard choice is Camp John Hay. A magnificent setting recently renovated by Jack Nicklaus's company. Over 5,000 ft in altitude, CJH is very, very, diferent from the other fine courses in the Philippines. It is the only course with Bentgrass greens...and the greens are swift and tricky. The course itself is quite friendly. But don't be macho. The fairways can be quite narrow and the abundent trees and sloping fairways will make you pay for foolishness. I absolutely love this course. The course is rejuvinating hole number six, the green of which suffered from the lack of light. CJH has just opened an absolutely beautiful club house, making it when hole number six gets back on line what I consider the perfect recreational golf experience.

Volume 18, No. 5 Buffalo County Historical Society September - October, 1995 CAMP JOHN R. BROOKE by Alice Shaneyfelt Howell In today's world (1995) mention is often made of "rewritten history", ''fractured history", or "revisionist history''. This story is one of "blended history". Two outstanding events of local history have seemingly become blended into one. We will attempt to separate the two events, each outstanding on its own merits, and give you the story of Camp John R. Brooke and the story of Camp Henry A. Morrow, both held on the outskirts of Kearney in September of 1888. All of the participants are now gone so we have had to rely on military historians, newspaper, magazine and journal items to find the facts. The United States Army Department of the Platte in 1888 included all of the states of Nebraska, Wyoming and Utah. During the summer many camps of instruction were established, manned by troops from selected forts within the Department. The largest of these summer camps in 1888 was located in southwest Kearney and was named in honor of John R. Brooke, Commanding General of the Department of the Platte. It was established September 1 and maintained throughout the month of September. Reporters and photographers from the east coast were sent to cover the activities of this large camp. The Omaha Bee had almost daily coverage. The

100 years of Camp John Hay
By RUBY GONZALEZ FOR as long as one could remember, a visit to Camp John Hay (CJH) has always been a high point of a Baguio stay. The grandparents enoyed it, as did parents and kids. Which brings us to the next point. If it had been there for that long, how old exactly is CJH? The answer: one hundred years on October 3.
A centennial celebration is certainly a rare and special occasion and hence allotted with a three-month celebration period.
The drum roll began on July 5, a day after the Fil-Am Friendship day. The kick-off was marked with a Fil-Am Food Fair top-billed with American favorites such as chili dogs, turkey sandwich, roast beef and burgundy. For soul and brain food, historical tours have been conceptualized with the aim of heightening students' appreciation for CJH's history. Short lectures will be given, while the John Hay Annual Art Contest, an on-the-spot competition that is now on its 9th year, will be held on September 27. A free concert by a 120-voice choir will be held on October 25, featuring famous songs from the past decades.
The culminating Grand Centennial Celebration will be held from October 23 to 26. It will be a gathering of all present and former employees of CJH and their families, as well as everyone who sees the camp as a special place. "It will be a day of nostalgia, albeit in a festive mood," management said. "Concerts, exhibits, a contest, an AV presentation, food and a lot of fun will mark John Hay's 100 glorious years."

ALL IS set for the 2nd Ladies Golf Challenge at Camp John Hay.
Preparations for the 2004 stretch of the 2nd Asian Ladies Team Championship to be held from May 24-26 are ongoing.
Once more, Camp John Hay Golf Club will host the annual all women invitational on its world-renowned championship golf course, which measures 5001-yards with an 18-hole par of 69.
The field will be as competitive as last years meet with 30 teams consisting of six players per team with two alternates expected to compete in a very challenging golf course re-designed by Golden Bear International through legendary golfer, Jack Nicklaus.
"More than 100 amateur women golfers representing various golf clubs and associations from all over the Philippines will be coming off recently-concluded missions, so it will be exciting to see how they do," Shean Bedi, overall coordinator of the tournament said.
