Callaghan, Morley u Pronunciation Key Callaghan, Morley (Morley Edward Callaghan), , Canadian novelist. During the 1920s he spent time in Paris, where he became friends with Ernest Hemingway , whose influence can be detected in Callaghan's spare literary style; he recalls these years in That Summer in Paris (1963). Callaghan's novels and short stories are marked by a concern with religion and Christianity, often focusing on individuals whose essential characteristic is a strong but often unexamined sense of self. After a burst of creativity that resulted in Strange Fugitive Native Argosy (1929), and Such Is My Beloved (1934), Callaghan published little between 1937 and 1950. The Loved and the Lost (1951) is considered by many to be his masterpiece. See also: Strange Fugitive Such Is My Beloved Morley Callaghan's Stories Ernest Hemingway Home pages: The Greatest Literature of All Time Selected Authors Selected Greatest Works Editor Eric CALLAGHAN, Morley Morley Callaghan apparently was concerned late in life that people would remember him for one minor achievement: the little Canadian knocked down the macho Ernest Hemingway in a boxing match refereed by F. Scott Fitzgerald. Callaghan preferred to be known for his novels. It's his short stories however that will be his lasting legacy—along with the fact that he knocked down Hemingway. For as much as we appreciate he was the first Canadian author to rank among the modern greats, and as much as we can love the man's sincere, liberal heart and thoughtful mind as revealed in his writing, we can't help but feel there is something old-fashioned about his longer writing. Something of the kindly raconteur that does not quite go with the cut-and-thrust of modern novels. Something that exists in his short stories too, but which is constrained there by the form, compressed and made harder. Callaghan never really learned the different rhythms and intensities of the longer form (until perhaps very late in his career strangely), and his novels usually seem like long short stories. Very good stories though. And the short stories themselves are jewels. They usually focus on very small, personal events—a young man caught shoplifting is bailed out by his mother, a boy has his treasured baseball cap stolen, two brothers compete for the love of a woman—and are told in deceptively simple language. Reading one Callaghan story every night before going to bed will make you a better person.
