Morley Edward Callaghan February 22 August 25 novelist short story writer, playwright TV and radio personality Callaghan grew up in Toronto, Ontario Canada , his birthplace. He was educated at the University of Toronto Osgoode Hall Law School . He never practiced law, however. During the he worked at the Toronto Daily Star where he became friends with fellow reporter, Ernest Hemingway formerly of the Kansas City Star . Callaghan began writing stories that were well received and soon was recognized as one of the best short story writers of the day. He then spent a couple of creative years in Paris France in the late 1920s where he was part of the great gathering of writers in Montparnasse such as Ernest Hemingway F. Scott Fitzgerald James Joyce and others. He recalled these years in his memoir That Summer in Paris . In this memoir he discusses the infamous boxing match between him and Hemingway. Callaghan took up Hemingway's challenge to a bout and, being a better boxer, Callaghan knocked Hemingway to the ground (along with his ego). The blame was centered on Fitzgerald's lack of attention on the stop watch as he let the boxing round go over time. This event injured the pride of Hemingway more than anything else. Callaghan's novels and short stories are marked by undertones of Roman Catholicism , often focusing on individuals whose essential characteristic is a strong but often weakened sense of self. His first novels were

Brief Biography
Morley Callaghan was born in Toronto in 1903 to Roman-Catholic parents. He attended St. Michael's College, University of Toronto from 1921-5. He earned a general arts degree and took classes across a multiplicity of disciplines, as well as a wide variety of extra-curricular activities. He also worked part-time with the Toronto Star Weekly , where he met Earnest Hemmingway, who became an early mentor. Although he completed a law degree in 1928, Callaghan's first love was writing. Callaghan's first novel appeared in 1928, Strange Fugitive . In 1929, he signed with a publishing house in New York for his first collection of short stories, A Native Argosy . He married and sailed to France, where he socialized with Hemmingway, F. Scott Fitzgerald and James Joyce in Paris. During a friendly boxing match with Hemmingway he knocked out the American novelist, and as a result their friendship was never the same. Callaghan was heavily influenced by American naturalist literature, apparent in such novels as It's Never Over (1930) and A Broken Journey (1932). His most commercially popular book came in 1934 with

During the 1920s he spent time in Paris, where he became friends with Ernest Hemingway , whose influence can be detected in Callaghan's spare literary style; he recalls these years in That Summer in Paris (1963). Callaghan's novels and short stories are marked by a concern with religion and Christianity, often focusing on individuals whose essential characteristic is a strong but often unexamined sense of self. After a burst of creativity that resulted in Strange Fugitive (1928), Native Argosy (1929), and Such Is My Beloved (1934), Callaghan published little between 1937 and 1950. The Loved and the Lost (1951) is considered by many to be his masterpiece. Callaghan's later works include The Many Colored Coat (1960), A Passion in Rome (1961), Stories (1967), A Fine and Private Place (1975), A Time for Judas (1983), and Our Lady of the Snows (1985). As a young man, Callaghan joined The Toronto Star, where he met Hemingway for the first time, and where the seeds of his literary career were planted. Callaghan became a literary sensation at the youthful age of 25. When he and his new bride Loretto traveled to Paris in 1929, they counted among their friends James Joyce, Miro, Fitzgerald and, of course, Hemingway. But as much as Callaghan was feted abroad, his reception in Canada was always a bit more rocky. One Toronto bookseller refused to keep any copies of his first book, Strange Fugitive. Years later, when he received the Governor-General's award in 1951 for The Loved and the Lost, some critics still thought it was embarrassing, implausible, almost snobbishly liberal. His final years were ones of vindication and heartbreak. After years of being in the critical doghouse, Callaghan became the grand old man of Canadian literature. Sadly, however, he wouldn't be able to savour those moments with his wife and partner. Loretto died in 1984, after years of failing health. In the twilight of his life, Callaghan, headed back to Paris for a poignant, final visit to the city that had beckoned once before. He died three years later in 1990 at age 87.

(full screen presentation, requires Flash) Hemingway vs. Callaghan chronicles the friendship between writers Ernest Hemingway and Morley Callaghan, from their first meeting in the early 1920s at the Toronto Star , to their days as part of Paris' fabled Lost Generation.
When they first met in the Star's newsroom, Hemingway was a war reporter with a grand vision of life, while Torontonian Callaghan yearned to write novels. Their interest in writing and sports sealed a friendship that endured until it came to an abrupt end in Paris in 1929.
The mini-series is a journey to the past that relives their friendship. It portrays the mad exhilaration of their years in Paris surrounded by great artists and writers, and the excitement of shared literary struggles, romantic entanglements and an ill-fated passion for boxing.
