Taken in parts or out of the context of when it was written, this book could offend some sensibilities.Taken as a whole, this book can be compared to a spur of the moment road trip through the hills and backcountry that goes tragically awry. And a trip it is, filled with twists and turns that were certainly not on the map! Enjoy!

He was raised in Chestertown, Maryland, and graduated from Washington College, where his father was president. After serving in World War I, he returned to Baltimore where he began working as a reporter. He first worked for the Baltimore American and then for the Baltimore Sun until 1923. His two most well known novels are The Postman Always Rings Twice , published in 1934 and Mildred Pierce . Both were best selles and were made into movies. Cain returned to Maryland in 1948, settling in Hyattsville. In his later years Cain occupied himself with the study of Shakespeare's sonnets and classical music - his fourth wife was the opera singer Florence Macbeth Whitwell. In 1970 he was named a Grand Master by the Mystery Writers of America. James M.Cain died on October 27, 1977, in Hyattsville, Maryland. The University of Maryland has put together a James M. World Publishing / Tower. Very Good +/Good. 1945. 5TH Printing. Hard Cover. The book shows the typical ""Tower Books"" page yellowing; Other than slight yellowing, the pages themselves are in excellent condition. DJ in good shape considering its age (55 years). Wear at head and heel of spine and a one-inch tear a top of dust jacket cover. General soiling to boards. Small tears along top of dust jacket. James M. Cain. the celebrated author of The Postman Always Rings Twice, tells a story of two men and a woman. Penzler Pick, April 2000: It is sometimes easy to trace a literary genre to its source, and James M. Cain's first novel, The Postman Always Rings Twice, is the noir novel that paved the way for all the noir fiction that followed. The famous film starring Lana Turner and John Garfield is notoriously dark, but the novel is even more full of despair and devoid of hope. It is a short booklittle more than a novellabut its searing characterization and depiction of tawdry greed and lust is branded into every reader's memory. Frank Chambers, a drifter, is dropped from the back of a truck at a rundown rural diner. When he spots Cora, the owner's wife, he instantly decides to stay. The sexy young woman, married to Nick, a violent and thuggish boor, is equally attracted to the younger man and sees him as her way out of her hopeless, boring life. They begin a clandestine affair and plot to kill Nick, beginning their own journey toward destruction. Horace McCoy, David Goodis, Jim Thompson, and the other notable noir writers never achieved Cain's spare brilliance. Virtually all of his major works have been filmed, though several Hollywood studios refused to make the films, directors refused to be involved, and actors turned down roles because of their repugnance at the lack of morality inherent in all Cain's characters. Reading him may not be fit for a Sunday school class, but once you begin you will be unable to resist continuing, like picking at a painful scab or watching a tarantula inside a glass dome. Otto Penzler

I thought it one of the Best Novels of All Time
...so I get out my book list, to decide what book to read next, when I noticed this book on it. What a happy moment! Why? Because I read it last month, not knowing it was on the list. Here follows the tale of how I came to pick up The Postman Always Rings Twice : Once upon a time, I was staying at my friend Joe's house, and I wound up reading his copy of Shoot the Piano Player (or Down There ) by David Goodis. I was amazed. Not only was it the best book I ever read, it wasn't even a close call. I sent a copy to my stepfather, with a note "This is the best book I've ever read." My mother picked it up, read the first page, and then sat down and read it all. She called me a week later, to ask why I thought it was the "best book I've ever read," since she didn't think it was Great. I asked her when the last time was that she sat down and read an entire novel, start to finish. She said, "It has been years." I asked her if she's been thinking about the characters at least once a day in the week since she'd read it. She said, "Come to think of it, I have." I asked her when the last time was that she called me up just to discuss a novel she had read. She answered "Never" which was true. And that pretty much answered her question.
