A Good Hair Week in Mongolia
After years of government oppression, the country that gave us Genghis Khan, the Attilla the Hun Show, and possibly the first Americans is rolling out the welcome mat. On an archaeological tress-hunt in the land of beneficent horsemen.

    Nov, 2003 by Paula Rohrlick
Random House, Vintage. 298p. c2002. 0-375-50766-3. $14,00. SA* You might not choose to swim with great white sharks off the South African coast, visit an active volcano in Ecuador, cope with huge bugs in the Congo, stalk a platypus (did you know the males are venomous?) in the Australian night, or visit the Western hemisphere's largest toxic waste dump, but it's wonderful fun to experience these adventures through the eyes of intrepid journalist Cahill. The essays originally appeared in Outside and other magazines. Cahill (author of Jaguars Ripped My Flesh, Pecked to Death by Ducks, and other enticingly titled collections) is funny, thoughtful, and self-deprecating, and he is also a terrific writer. His pieces could be held up as examples of the essay form in English classes; I particularly liked "Gorillas in Our Schools." in which he entertainingly explains how an old football injury inadvertently led to a discovery about gorilla behavior. A delight for armchair adventurers; for all high school and public libraries.

    Writers we love: Tim Cahill
By Don George L ast night, I shudder to report, I dreamed about Tim Cahill. Let me backtrack: Last week I wrote in this column about Jan Morris, anticipating her appearance in a travel writers' conference I was chairing later in the week. In that same column I also mentioned Pico Iyer and Tim Cahill, the two other travel writers who were guests of honor at the event. I intended to move on to a different topic this week, but after spending four summer- camp- intense days in the presence of these craft masters, in workshops and panels and dinners and readings and late-night beer and travel tale revels, my mind refuses to let go of them. Their words and their writings stay with me; their warmth and intelligence and generosity stay with me, too. We parted on Sunday and I went to work on Monday, half in the office and half still enmeshed in that conference, and then on Monday night I settled down with Cahill's most recent collection of stories, "Pass the Butterworms."

tim cahill I have no problem with the adventure travel movement. It makes better, more sensitive people. If you get people diving
    http://www.randomhouse.com/boldtype/0902/cahill/interview.html
old Type: You've been writing about adventure travel for 25 years. Partly because of your success there's now a huge adventure travel industry that has put a lot of people out in the kinds of places you used to have all to yourself. Are you encouraged by this or does it seem like you've got this annoying horde of wankers following you around? Tim Cahill: I have no problem with the adventure travel movement. It makes better, more sensitive people. If you get people diving on a coral reef they're going to become more respectful of the outdoors and more concerned with the threats that places like that face and they're going to care more about protecting them than they would have before. But it does make it harder for me. They go to all the best places. BT: But where does that leave you as far as potential trips you can write about then? Isn't it becoming harder to find unfamiliar places? Might the "been there, done that" problem crop up for you from time to time? TC: Yeah, I see guidebooks that say things like, "There's this famous article by Tim Cahill in Jaguars Ripped my Flesh, and this is how you do it." BT: What about the piece in your new book about your trip to Colombia with Robert Pelton, the guy who does those "World's Most Dangerous Places" things on TV? You guys deliberately tracked down the FARC guerillas, people who have a stated policy of using kidnapping as part of their war against the government. Is putting yourself in harm's way like Pelton does the inevitable dystopian future of adventure travel?
