Twenty five years ago, Tim Cahill took American adventure writing back to its roots in the outdoor tales of Cooper, Twain and Hemingway. Ever since, his first-person adventure columns in Outside magazine have single-handedly pioneered a new literary form where the pursuit of heroic quests in remote locales frequently trips over hidden obstacles or bumps into the modest limits of the writer's skills in the hairy-chested outdoor arts. Now, with the publication of Hold the Enlightenment, More Travel Less Bliss , Cahill again boldly gallumphs forth in the footsteps of his previous Pecked to Death by Ducks, A Wolverine is Eating My Leg, and Pass the Butterworms . Whether he's running from bandits in the Sahara, chasing narcoterrorists in Colombian or simply going for a swim with great white sharks, Cahill risks life and limb to take his readers beyond where even the most intrepid of them would go themselves. He also gets peed on by chimps, suffers paralyzing bouts of panic and falls off a cliff. Adventure and misadventure, Cahill suggests, can look an awful lot alike when you're in the midst of either one. Cahill notes that there are more unfriendly people with guns here than in his earlier books, but he also spends plenty of time contemplating places where peril doesn't lurk.

About Tim Cahill
Tim Cahill with his sisters Alicia and Paula.
The second oldest of Theresa and Paul Cahill’s nine children, Tim Cahill grew up in the blue-collar city of Quincy to working-class parents whose only concern in life was that their children were fed, clothed, housed and educated. Although not politically active themselves, Tim’s parents had politics in their blood. On the other side of the family, Tim’s grandmother, Florence Lynch, is a descendent from one of Massachusetts founding families, the Spauldings, who were instrumental in the founding of both Braintree and Chelmsford.
Tim Cahill's mother, Theresa, with Tim's grandfather, William Fitzhenry
Tim, Joe and Ed at their Quincy based business
It was at Quincy High School that Tim Cahill first learned the lessons that would become his guiding principle: Through perseverance and willingness to work hard, anything can be accomplished. After graduating from Boston University, in 1982 he and two friends, Ed Graham and Joe Irvine, realized a dream by starting their own business. They worked hard to make that business grow for more than a decade, and they persevered to make their dreams come true. Tim was first elected at-large to the Quincy City Council in 1987, and in 1996 he successfully challenged Norfolk County's only Republican elected official and was elected Norfolk County Treasurer. In 2002, he was elected State Treasurer and Receiver General. During his first 100 days in office, Treasurer Cahill focused on finding long-term and short-term ways to help taxpayers during the budget crisis. Cahill restructured the Keno game in order to increase revenues to local cities and towns. He also executed a bond refunding which saved taxpayers $32 million (on a present value basis) through lower debt service costs. He continues to work with the legislature to find ways to save money for the Commonwealth.

I love his adventurous spirit, but even more, I love the way he subtly educates us about the world in his writing by the respect he brings to the places and people he meets, and by the narrative twists he often uses to illuminate the folly of our own preconceptions. I interviewed him a few weeks ago when he was in San Francisco promoting his new book, "Pass the Butterworms." Why did you get into travel writing in the first place; what was the impulse behind it?

Tim Cahill chats about the IMAX film "Dolphins"
March 14, 2000

Web posted at: 5:00 p.m. EDT
(CNN) Founding editor of "Outside" Magazine and best-selling author Tim Cahill joined Nature chat on Monday, March 13, 2000 to discuss his new project, an IMAX film entitled, "Dolphins." He is also the author of "National Geographic's Dolphins," a book, written in conjunction with the IMAX production. Both projects use science and breathtaking photography to tell the story of marine biologist Kathleen Dudzinski and her work researching the communication habits of wild dolphins. Mr. Cahill participated in the chat at the CNN.com studio. A typist was provided for him. The following is an edited transcript of the chat. Chat Moderator: Thank you for joining us today, Tim Cahill, and welcome!

weather here

(This article adapted from The Tributary, March 2000) Tim Cahill, Mishap Maestro What to do? If you’re Tim Cahill, world-traveler, acclaimed outdoor writer, and longtime Livingston local, turning back is not an option. "What we did was approach these guys on the street, in public, and say ‘would you guys like to be our bodyguards? We’ll pay you for it.’" The trick was just bold enough to work, and the group, now warlord-strong, resumed its journey northward. When they reached the mines a fierce sandstorm whipped up, and after it was over one of their party was missing. Guessing that he’d been kidnapped by the Arab mine-owners, Cahill and his friends offered ransom. But the Arabs denied any involvement. "We found him the next day," remembers Cahill. "He’d gotten lost in the storm. He was about ten miles away, holed up in an old French Foreign Legion fort, hiding from the Arabs." "Now there’s an ideal mishap," says Cahill. "It’s got politics, revolution, people lost in the sand" – in other words, something to write about. For therein lies the secret to Cahill’s award-winning travel writing: something has to go wrong. And for the tall, thick-bearded, interminably affable author of six books and over 300 articles, something usually does.

Interview with Tim Cahill

Listen with RealAudio: Interview with Tim Cahill The last time we spoke with travel writer Tim Cahill, he talked about his adventures in Mongolia...riding across vast expanses of eastern China on the back of a pony and eating something unidentifiably he decided to call, "noisy cheese". Today Tim's come to talk about an adventure that's even more outrageous...swimming with great white sharks in South Africa that probably weigh as much as your car! After I read his article in the August issue of Outside Magazine , I just had to know, Tim, what in the world were you thinking?

Writers we love: Tim Cahill
By Don George L ast night, I shudder to report, I dreamed about Tim Cahill. Let me backtrack: Last week I wrote in this column about Jan Morris, anticipating her appearance in a travel writers' conference I was chairing later in the week. In that same column I also mentioned Pico Iyer and Tim Cahill, the two other travel writers who were guests of honor at the event. I intended to move on to a different topic this week, but after spending four summer- camp- intense days in the presence of these craft masters, in workshops and panels and dinners and readings and late-night beer and travel tale revels, my mind refuses to let go of them. Their words and their writings stay with me; their warmth and intelligence and generosity stay with me, too. We parted on Sunday and I went to work on Monday, half in the office and half still enmeshed in that conference, and then on Monday night I settled down with Cahill's most recent collection of stories, "Pass the Butterworms."

Outside interview
Random House interview Over the past two decades, Tim Cahill has established a reputation as America's best known (and funniest) adventure travel writer. A founding editor of Outside Magazine , he is the author of seven books, including Hold the Enlightenment Pass the Butterworms A Wolverine is Eating My Leg Jaguars Ripped My Flesh ... Pecked to Death By Ducks , and Road Fever . In April, his book about Yellowstone, Lost in My Own Backyard , will be published as part of the Crown Journeys series. He is an editor at large for Outside , and his work appears in National Geographic Adventure The New York Times Book Review , and other national publications. He lives in Montana. How did you get started traveling? I was 10 years old and told my father that "all the other kids" got to go to Florida or Arizona, and I never got to go anywhere. He said the YMCA swimming team traveled all over the state (Wisconsin) and that if I made the team I could go. I did in fact make the team and went to such exotic locales as Beloit and Fond du Lac and Green Bay. In fact, I set state records for my age group. As a result, I believe I have always associated travel with intense physical effort. These days I do a lot of "rough" travel to remote places.
