First Roman Emperor 63 B.C. - 14 C.E. He subjected the whole wide earth to the rule of the Roman people

The Deeds of the Divine Augustus
Emperor Augustus of Rome was born with the given name Gaius Octavius on September 23, 63 B.C. He took the name Gaius Julius Caesar Octavianus (Octavian) in 44 B.C. after the murder of his great uncle, Julius Caesar . In his will Caesar had adopted Octavian and made him his heir. Octavian was a shrewd, brilliant and astute politician. Through cold, hard political calculation he able to achieve power in Rome. At the time of Caesar's assassination, Octavian had no official power. Only after he marched on Rome and forced the senate to name him consul, was he established as a power to be reckoned with. In 43 B.C., Octavian, Marcus Antonius ( Marc Antony In 40 B.C., Antony married Octavia, Octavian's sister, and later deserted her for Cleopatra, Queen of Egypt. When Antony gave Roman provinces to his children by Cleopatra, Octavian declared war on Antony. Theme: The Breakdown of Authority
Grades: Grades 11-12
Summary:
This play concerns events before and after the assasination of the Roman ruler Julius Caesar. The central character, the Roman general Brutus, reluctantly goes along with the plot to kill his friend Caesar, who has been ruling as a dictator. At Caesar's funeral, another general, Marc Antony, incites a mob to avenge Caesar's death. A civil war erupts, with the killers of Caesar leading one army and Antony leading the other. The play contains some of Shakespeare's most majestic and eloquent writing, while posing important questions about choosing between loyalty to a cause and loyalty to personal principles.

(8 photos in photo gallery) Gaius Iulius Caesar (100-44 BCE) was a central figure of the last decades of the Roman Republic. He was an accomplished writer and orator, a brilliant politician and power-broker and an outstanding general, but he was also totally ruthless in the pursuit of his personal goals and ambitions, which included not only absolute power over the Roman empire, but also divine honours and recognition as a human god. Gaius Iulius Caesar
    The Early Years
Caesar was born in 102 or 100 BCE into the ancient patrician family of the Iulii who claimed ancestry from Aeneas of Troy, one of the mythical founders of Rome, and the goddess Venus , but few members of the family had distinguished themselves in the previous generations. Caesar's father arrived at the praetor-ship, but never won the election for the consulship. The years of his youth were dominated by the conflict between the factions of Gaius Marius and Lucius Cornilius Sulla in the conflict between the populares and the optimates . Caesar's family relations placed him on the side of the populares , since his aunt Julia was married to Marius. In 87, when Marius was elected consul with his ally Lucius Cornelius Cinna, this bond was further strengthened when Cinna gave his daughter Cornelia in marriage to Caesar.

The Roman Empire Emperors Social standing in the Roman Empire was based in part on heredity, property and wealth, Roman citizenship, and freedom. The specific class designations included Senators, Patricians, Equestrians, Plebeians, Slaves, Freedmen, and non-Roman citizens - all of which were ruled by the Emperor. The boundaries between these classes were legally enforced, although it was possible to move up the social ladder as one's financial circumstances improved. During the Empire, entry into the higher classes could be gained upon acquisition of property and wealth, or at the pleasure of the Emperor - in one famous incident, Caligula even raised a horse to Senatorial rank. Patricians The name "Patrician" comes from the Latin word patres, or "fathers," and the Patricians were a privileged group of families that dominated the political, religious, and military leadership of the Empire. The majority were wealthy landowners from old Roman families, although the Emperor could raise anyone he chose to Patrician status.
