Caesar, Julius (ca. 100-44 B.C.E.)
page: Roman politician, general, and writer, Caius Julius Caesar became one of the most powerful men of the ancient world. Throughout his maturity he was frequently reminded, sometimes derisively, of his youthful sexual affair with the king of Bithynia. Caesar came from a family of patricians (noblemen), the Julii, which traced its ancestry all the way to the goddess Venus by way of the Trojan hero Aeneas. Caesar's youth coincided with a particularly turbulent period of civil strife between patricians and plebeians (commoners) grouped behind their respective leaders Sulla and Marius. Sponsor Message.
Although patricians, the Julii were not particularly wealthy and took the side of the people. Caesar's aunt had married Marius and in 84 B.C.E. he himself married Cornelia, the daughter of Cinna, another of Marius' few allies among the patricians. When Sulla took power in 82 B.C.E., Caesar escaped the bloody purges that followed, even though he had refused Sulla's demand that he divorce Cornelia. He nevertheless found it advisable to leave Rome to do military service in Asia.

106-43 BC "I know that your heart was always as heavy as mine. Not only did we foresee the destruction of one of the two armies and its leader, a vast disaster, but we realized that victory in civil war is the worst of all calamities. I dreaded the prospect, even if victory should fall to those we had joined...As for the present time, if our friends had gained the mastery, they would have used it very immoderately...We live, it may be said, in a state that has been turned upside down." Cicero, Letter to Varro (Rome, 46 BC). "This man's works, so many and so fine, will last for ever and there is no need to comment on his great abilities and capacity for hard work...However, it is a pity that he could not have been more temperate when things went well and stronger in adversity." The African Wars By Julius Caesar Translated by W. A. McDevitte and W. S. Bohn Chapter 1 Caesar, advancing by moderate journeys, and continuing his march without intermission, arrived at Lilybaeum, on the 14th day before the calends of January. Designing to embark immediately, though he had only one legion of new levies, and not quite six hundred horse, he ordered his tent to be pitched so near the sea-side that the waves lashed the very foot of it. This he did with a view that none should think he had time to delay, and that his men might be kept in readiness at a day or an hour's warning. Though the wind at that time was contrary, he nevertheless detained the soldiers and mariners on board, that he might lose no opportunity of

Gaius Julius Caesar ( warning this page contains an image over 110 kB in size ) was born in the year 100 BC into a patrian family who claimed decendancy from the kings of Alba Langa and through them, Aeneas of Troy whose mother was the goddess Venus. Caesar's name Julius comes from Iulius, the family name. This comes from Iulus, the name of Venus' son. At the time of his birth, Rome was still a republic and the empire was only really beginning. The senators ruled, motivated by the greed of power in the hope of becoming either a consul or a praetor, the two senior posts which carried imperium, the legal right to command an army. From these posts it was possible to, with the help of the army at your command, conquer new territories and so gain a triumph and the pleasure of knowing that your name would be remembered forever in statues and inscribed monuments, paid for by the spoils of the war. Caesar made his way to praetorship by 62 BC and many of the senate felt him a dangerous, ambitious man. Because of this, they deprived him of a triumph after his praetorian command in Spain (61-60 BC) and they also did their best to keep him out of consulship. He finally became consul in 59 BC. Much of the thanks for this achievement should be given to Gnaeus Pompeius (Pompey the Great) who had just come back from a campaign which had doubled the income of the Roman treasury and gained three new provinces to the empire. Because of this he had popular support and his voice carried great weight with the public at large. Because of Pompey, however, to become a leading person in Roman politics you had to have more then just an ordinary triumph.

    JULIUS CAESAR: HISTORICAL BACKGROUND
102/100 BCE: Gaius Julius Caesar was born (by Caesarean section according to an unlikely legend) of Aurelia and Gaius Julius Caesar, a praetor. His family had noble, patrician roots, although they were neither rich nor influential in this period. His aunt Julia was the wife of Gaius Marius, leader of the Popular faction. c. 85 BCE: His father died, and a few years later he was betrothed and possibly married to a wealthy young woman, Cossutia. This betrothal/marriage was soon broken off, and at age 18 he married Cornelia, the daughter of a prominent member of the Popular faction; she later bore him his only legitimate child, a daughter, Julia. When the Optimate dictator, Sulla, was in power, he ordered Caesar to divorce her; when Caesar refused, Sulla proscribed him (listed him among those to be executed), and Caesar went into hiding. Caesar's influential friends and relatives eventually got him a pardon. c. 79 BCE: Caesar, on the staff of a military legate, was awarded the civic crown (oak leaves) for saving the life of a citizen in battle. His general sent him on an embassy to Nicomedes, the king of Bithynia, to obtain a fleet of ships; Caesar was successful, but subsequently he became the butt of gossip that he had persuaded the king (a homosexual) only by agreeing to sleep with him. When Sulla died in 78, Caesar returned to Rome and began a career as a orator/lawyer (throughout his life he was known as an eloquent speaker) and a life as an elegant man-about-town.
