Parents' Corner H4K Crafts and Projects The Roman Empire (Julio-Claudians) Everybody was tired of all this fighting and killing . And everyone was afraid of Octavian. So when Octavian just kept ruling almost as if he were king, nobody tried to stop him. He made people call him Augustus (which means The Good) instead of Octavian. But he was smarter than his uncle Julius Caesar had been. He didn't call himself dictator, but First Citizen. He didn't disband the Senate; he made the Senate do what he wanted. He had himself elected tribune , so he could veto whatever the Senate did that he didn't like. People knew that Augustus was really taking over, but as long as there was peace and he didn't SAY he was taking over, it was okay with them.

If one or the other of them does not go off on a Parthian war, I see great discords hanging over us, which steel and force will settle. Each in spirit and in resource is prepared. If without danger to you it could happen, it is a great and pleasing spectacle with Fortuna has prepared for you!

From Octavian to Augustus:
Images Illustrating His Rise to Power
During the decades leading up to Julius Caesar's dictatorship, Roman coinage took on an increasingly personal character, displaying designs with a clear propagandistic message promoting the family or the political favorites of the moneyer who struck the coins for that year. Types commemorated victories, beneficent legislation, famous ancestors, and the like. The trend reached an extreme in early 44 BC when Caesar, stockpiling money to pay for his imminent Parthian campaign, had coins struck with his own portrait, a first for the official coinage of Rome (the images of living Romans had appeared on coins at the periphery of the empire as early as ca. 196 BC, but never on Rome's official state issues). This move was counted as one among many which showed Caesar's tendency towards monarchical behavior and which resulted in his assassination. Far from removing this problem of self-aggrandizement on coinage, however, Caesar's death left the field open for a wide array of would-be rulers who copied the trend to promote themselves, first among the soldiers who supported their causes (for pay and rewards of booty), secondly among the rest of the populace. Thus, we have today a most interesting numismatic documentation of portraits and propagandistic messages of the men who struggled for power in the political vacuum left by Caesar's sudden departure; more to the point, we also can trace the rise to power of Octavian, who ultimately became Rome's first Emperor, known otherwise as Augustus. These are presented below.

Caesar and Augustus
The title of Caesar, taken from the hereditary name of Gaius Julius Caesar, eventually became synonymous with the heir to the throne. The title of the Emperor (Imperator) was actually “Augustus”. Octavianus, the heir of Julius Caesar and first Roman Emperor is known by the name Augustus, as he was the first to be appointed with that title. This position, essentially granting absolute power over the senate and people for life, replaced the old periodic Republican title of Dictator. While we today know Octavian as Augustus, each Emperor was actually awarded the title. When an Augustus named an heir to the throne, that heir would be known thereafter as Caesar, until his ascension, when he too would become Augustus. Bronze Augustus, Archaeological Museum, Athens Augustus Caesar 23 September 62 BC 19 August AD ), known earlier in his life as Octavian , was the first Roman Emperor . Although he preserved the outward forms of the Roman Republic , he ruled as an autocrat for more than 40 years. He ended a century of civil wars and gave Rome an era of peace, prosperity and imperial greatness. He is generally known to historians by the title "Augustus" (revered one), which he acquired in 27 BC Augustus was born at Rome with the name Gaius Octavius Thurinus . His father , also Gaius Octavius, came from a respectable but undistinguished family of the equestrian order and was governor of Macedonia before his death in 58 BC . More importantly, his mother Atia was the niece of Rome's greatest soldier and de facto ruler, Julius Caesar . In 46 BC Caesar, who had no legitimate children, took his grand-nephew soldiering in Spain, and adopted him as his heir (see also adoption in Rome ). He then took the name Gaius Julius Caesar Octavianus.
