Word: Word Starts with Ends with Definition Pat Cadigan (b. 1953) is a American born science fiction author Note that this partial list contains some authors whose works of fantastic fiction would today be called science fiction, even if they predate, or did not work in that genre. There is also a considerable overlap with the List of fantasy authors, since many authors are equally comfortable with both genres, and in any case some works deliberately combine the two or blur the distinction. Some notable science fiction authors are (in alphabetical order):

It describes the nihilistic, underground side of the digital society which started to evolve in the last two decades of the 20th century. The dystopian world of cyberpunk has been called the antithesis of the utopian science fiction visions of the mid-20th century as typified by the world of Star Trek.

BY ANDREW LEONARD E ven when she's calling herself an "idiot," or otherwise indulging in cynical self-deprecation, Pat Cadigan still swaggers just like you'd hope a cyberpunk legend would. She's the kind of person who looks like she's wearing a leather jacket even when she isn't who you don't want to rile, but would love to party with. In short as one would expect from the author of the 1989 cyberpunk classic "Synners," probably the best science fiction novel with a rock 'n' roll theme she's a rocker. She's also got a sense of humor, which she uses for mocking self-aggrandizement. Over dinner at a sushi restaurant in Berkeley, she recounted the moment when "The X-Files'" Gillian Anderson, hosting a BBC TV show, introduced a new segment by looking dramatically at the camera and announcing, "And now, the queen of science fiction, Pat Cadigan."

jack in
When is cyberpunk not cyberpunk? What is the sound of one hand jacking in? Who is wearing your face today? Pat Cadigan knows. She's written a novel which mixes the tropes of cyberpunk and the tone of a noir mystery in masterful ways, ending up with something that's a bit of both but a bit more than either. Reading Tea from an Empty Cup is one of the best things you could do to occupy your time while you're waiting for your turn at the artificial-reality parlor. It's got hotsuits and smart drugs, maybe even some mirrorshades, and a detective who's trying to be as hardboiled as she can. But Cadigan didn't stop with that - then she poured in a whole can of whup-ass and stirred it up real good. Damn, now I've broken the tone. Cadigan wouldn't do that. Pat Cadigan writes well, consistently - tough, scintillant prose that picks you up and takes you along until you get where she's taking you. The rapid-fire banter that opens the book is only the beginning. Sometimes it takes a paragraph or two to catch up with the changes she's ringing, the literary equivalent of cinematic jump cuts, but that's the peril of reading her book unaugmented. It's a fast-paced, amphetamine-fueled romp through a very plausible future... this may not be the way virtual reality really goes, but it very well

Pat Cadigan : Fools
(HarperCollins p/back, 1994, 299pp)
Pat Cadigan always operates at the bleeding edge of cyberpunk technology, but I can't help but think that with Fools she has gone a step too far over the edge, and fallen into a welter of incomprehensible plot and interior dialogue, utilising three or four different typefaces to signify different voices warring in the central character's head. As a piece of science fiction it is interesting: as a story it is much too confusing, as the constant switching of the main character is hard to follow (especially as some of the different typefaces are difficult to read), dissipating tension and increasing irritation. Altogether a disappointment from an author whose previous works have been excellent.

The Ultimate Cyberpunk
edited by Pat Cadigan
(ibooks, $16.00, 414 pages, 1 September 2002; ISBN: 0743452399)
Renowned cyberpunk author Pat Cadigan has assembled The Ultimate Cyberpunk , an anthology intended as a celebration of the genre that, from the mid-1980s to the early 1990s, addressed both the anxieties and the excitement generated by the revolutionary potential of home computers, portable technology, rapidly evolving telecommunications systems, and an expanding array of possibilities for body modification. The anthology's stated purpose is to highlight a few of the genre's ancestors, present its brightest stars, and showcase how it later evolved. The Ultimate Cyberpunk fails to do any of that adequately. The four antecedents selected here are among the anthology's best stories regardless of genre, but some explanation is required to understand how these contributed to cyberpunk. That explanation is nowhere to be found. Only James Tiptree, Jr.'s groundbreaking 1973 story "The Girl Who Was Plugged In" is an obvious prototype. The bulk of the book is devoted to the cyberpunk years, and only the most obvious and oft-seen authors are included. In this section, only William Gibson's visionary "Burning Chrome" still retains its evocative edge. Most of the other stories are mired in excessive exposition.

Title: Tea From An Empty Cup
Author: Pat Cadigan
Publisher: Tor
ISBN: 0-312-86665-8
Price: $22.95 In the beginning there was a coffee bar. And Cadigan said, in this coffee bar let there be an unnamed Japanese guy trying to sell an unnamed white guy a gel cap containing a creation myth distilled from millennia of racial memory. And let this gel cap mark the user's body fluids and act as a passkey, so that, when the ingestor enters artificial reality (AR) via hotsuit and head mount, he'll be able to find the mythical "outdoor"-AR's version of the Holy Grail. About half of Tea from an Empty Cup first appeared electronically in Omni Online in 1995 as a novella called "Death in the Promised Land." In the current novel, the "Death in the Promised Land" storyline (chaptered under the same name) alternates with a new storyline called "Empty Cup." The two stories are integrally related but don't interact, except briefly toward the end of the book. "Empty Cup" focuses on Yuki, a woman searching for long time friend Tom Iguchi, who has disappeared after a stint as "boy-toy" to the aristocratic Joy Flower. Yuki approaches Joy Flower and is hired as her assistant. But when Yuki goes to her new apartment below Joy Flower's office, she's told to sleep in a hotsuit. When she slips it on, she's involuntarily injected with stimulants that cause her to enter AR in a hyped-up state. And when she sees her virtual reflection in a pane of glass, it's Tom's face that is staring back at her.
