Tell a friend Find subscription deals New South narratives of freedom: rereading George Washington Cable's "`Tite Poulette" and Madame Delphine - Critical Essay
MELUS
Spring, 2002 by James Robert Payne
In "`Tite Poulette" and in his related narrative of Madame Delphine (1881) (1) Cable explores possibilities for change in the South of his own young manhood, a volatile Period after emancipation and before segregation was sanctioned by the Plessy v. Ferguson Supreme Court ruling of 1896. In that window of time when it seemed to many that the future was open, Cable wrote against any idea of looking back to an idealized, monolithically-conceived past of white male supremacy as a basis for constructing a New South. With a conception of fiction as parable and believing that progress in the South required change of individual Southern men and Southern women, Cable modeled with individual characters possibilities of transformation of familiar Southern values and cultural practices regarding men's and women's roles, race, and, especially in Madame Delphine, religion. I Early on we learn that "white" is socially, not just physically, determined, and that for white-appearing 'Tite Poulette and her mother, Madame John, not being "real white" (221) is the most important thing to know about the two central women characters. In an indirect fashion, easy to miss on first reading, Cable's narrator suggests how Madame John's socially imposed race and gender status as "quadroon lad[y]" (217) is fundamental to her identity in her immediate Vieux Carre Creole community as well as her possibilities in life: "[W]ho was this Madame John?"

A PHOTO GALLERY GW Bridge Homepage The George Washington Bridge stands high above the Hudson River, its eastern end resting on the shores of Manhattan, its western end embedded in the wooded bluffs of New Jersey's Palisades. Twice as long as the longest suspension bridge ever built, it was the marvel of its time and, to some, it will always be the noblest of all bridges. Spanning the river to link New York City and New Jersey had challenged planners for over 100 years before Othmar Ammann, the brilliant, Swiss-born architect and engineer, proposed a bridge design in 1923 that ultimately was chosen from all others. The Port Authority, with Ammann as its new chief engineer, began construction in October of 1927. Ammann's design, bold and foresighted, was an engineering tour de force, with an extraordinary 3,500-foot center span suspended between two 570' steel towers. It would have the capacity and strength to add a railroad or a second roadway with an additional six lanes. To view an enlargement of any of the photos in the gallery below just click on the photo.

Bush Airtime Is Triple His Rival's By Howard Kurtz
    Washington Post Staff Writer
Monday, April 19, 2004; Page C01 When President Bush delivered a routine stump speech to a group of New Mexico homeowners on March 26, CNN and Fox News each carried his appearance for 35 minutes, and MSNBC for 33 minutes. When John Kerry gave what was billed as a major address on national security at George Washington University on March 17, he was knocked off the screen by a large explosion in Baghdad. CNN and Fox each dropped Kerry (who had been reduced to small box) after three minutes, and MSNBC never picked him up. But as the Iraq coverage continued, all three networks carried Vice President Cheney in California attacking Kerry as weak on national security Fox for 28 minutes, MSNBC for 23 and CNN for 13. In the daily battle for airtime, Bush has drawn more than three times as much live cable coverage as his Democratic challenger, yet another example of the advantages of incumbency.

News Articles: $38.4 Million in New Approach Ramps date: 12-18-1997 Quote: Economics and utility are not the engineer's only concerns. He must temper his practicality with aesthetic sensitivity. His structures should please the eye. IN fact, an engineer designing a bridge is justified in making a more expensive design for beauty's sake alone. After all, many people will have to look at the bridge for the rest of their lives. Few of us appreciate eyesore, even if we should save a little money by building them. - Othmar H. Ammann, 1958 PROJECT OVERVIEW
The George Washington Bridge combines many advances in suspension bridge technology. For example, flexible steel towers and a revolutionary cable-spinning process to lay the pair of 3-foot-diameter cables that make up the bridge deck. The steelwork to the towers was designed to be covered with concrete and granite panels, but due to the natural beauty of the fabricated steel skeleton, the bridge authority decided not to cover it. This decision not only saved money but also allowed the bridge to be opened approximately eight months early.

George Washington, byname Father of His Country1, American general and commander in chief of the colonial armies in the American Revolution (1775–83) and subsequently first president of the United States (1789–97). Early life
Though George Washington's birthday is celebrated on February 22 using the Gregorian calendar, he was born on February 11 according to the Julian calendar, used at his time of birth. Washington was part of the economic and cultural elite of the slave owning planters of Virginia. His parents Augustine Washington (1693 - April 12, 1743) and Mary Ball (1708 - August 25, 1789) were of English descent. As a youth, he was trained as a surveyor and helped survey the Shenandoah Valley in Virginia.
    Early career
Washington was commissioned in 1754 as a colonel in the Virginia Militia and built a series of forts in the western frontier of Virginia. He accompanied the Braddock Expedition of the British Army during the French and Indian War. During the battle of the Wilderness near the Monongahela he had three horses shot out from under him. He showed his coolness under fire in organizing the retreat from the debacle. Washington then organized the First Virginia Regiment, which saw service through the war; however, Washington left the Regiment to serve in the House of Burgesses.
