    AppalBooks
As a start on my Appalachia page, I've begun compiling a list of books by Appalachians, about southern Appalachia, or set in southern Appalachia. The list is highly selective, personal, idiosyncratic, and biased, and I have not attempted to list all books by the individual authors. Also, there may be one or two writers or books included that are not, strictly speaking, Appalachian. I am acquainted with all of these books, and recommend them, though some more than others. None, I think, is a waste of time. This page will be open-ended and pretty much constantly under construction. I hope eventually to list recommended music, as well.

Sylva publishers gather poetry from North Carolina sources By Michael Beadle Gatherings: A Collection of North Carolina Poetry , edited by Kathryn Byer.
    Sylva: Spring Street Editions, 2001.
    48 pages.
What started out as a celebration of writers in a statewide poetry anthology two years ago has turned into an exciting new publishing venture for the City Lights Bookstore in Sylva.
This Friday, Nov. 16, beginning at 7 p.m., City Lights Bookstore will host a reception for 36 local poets recently published in a poetry anthology called Gatherings
    Gatherings

The project originated with the publication of a statewide poetry anthology called Word and Witness: 100 Years of North Carolina Poetry . As a way to drum up support for the book and for poetry in general, Moore and Byer set up a poetry contest that local writers around Western North Carolina could enter. After more than 40 poets entered, multiple winners were given first-, second- and third-place recognition. When the contest winners were invited to read their poems, the back room at City Lights known as the regional room was packed. The response had been so overwhelming that Moore and Byer took up the idea of publishing the poets in a small anthology.
In the process of putting the book together, Moore set up Spring Street Editions, which allows City Lights Bookstore to have a legal publishing name to legitimize the operation and in case subsequent books are done in the future.

A biography of Fahs can be found at http://www.harvardsquarelibrary.org/unitarians/fahs.html READING from " Mountain Time " Kathryn Stripling Byer Up here in the mountains we know what extinct means. We've seen how our breath on a bitter night fades like a ghost from the window glass. We know the wolf's gone. The panther. We've heard the old stories run down, stutter out into silence. Who knows where we're heading? All roads seem to lead to Millennium, dark roads with drop-offs we can't plumb. It's time to be brought up short now with the tale-tellers' Listen: There once lived a woman named Delphia who walked through these hills teaching children to read. She was known as a quilter whose hand never wearied, a mother who raised up two daughters to pass on her words like a strong chain of stitches. Imagine her sitting among us, her quick thimble moving along these lines as if to hear every word striking true as the stab of her needle through calico.

    The Secret Life of Bees
    by Sue Monk Kidd
Sue Monk Kidd's ravishing debut novel has stolen the hearts of reviewers and readers alike with its strong, assured voice. Set in South Carolina in 1964, The Secret Life of Bees tells the story of Lily Owens, whose life has been shaped around the blurred memory of the afternoon her mother was killed. When Lily's fierce-hearted "stand-in mother," Rosaleen, insults three of the town's fiercest racists, Lily decides they should both escape to Tiburon, South Carolinaa town that holds the secret to her mother's past. There they are taken in by an eccentric trio of black beekeeping sisters who introduce Lily to a mesmerizing world of bees, honey, and the Black Madonna who presides over their household. This is a remarkable story about divine female power and the transforming power of lovea story that women will share and pass on to their daughters for years to come. BUY!

Byer's poems enter the mystery of old age
    By Rob Neufeld
POSTED: April 19, 2002 4:10 p.m. Kids can't see it, though it registers with them. Middle- aged adults rarely see it, being too busy. Poet Kathryn Stripling Byer gives voice to it - that is, the kind of vision that comes with age - in her new volume, "Catching Light" (Louisiana State University Press). Since childhood, Byer has been particularly keen to aging, although it is natural to spend youth obliviously. Old age can be a frightening prospect, as Byer's observations of her grandmothers attest, but it is also mysterious and wonderful. Kathryn Stripling Byer, award-winning Cullowhee poet, reads from her latest work, "Catching Light," at City Lights Bookstore in Sylva (586-9499), Friday, 7:30 p.m.; and at Malaprop's Bookstore/Cafe in downtown Asheville (254-6734), Saturday, 7 p.m. In the poem, "Tired," the poet-as-girl observes her grandmother honing her butcher knife "the last autumn she came/ to hog-killing, so tired,/ my mother said, you could smell/ death trailing after her." What is the girl's reaction? "I stand/ till I feel how/ she felt, standing there," she reveals. She wanted to know the soul of her dying grandmother.

Mrs. Howard's presentation, entitled "In Her Own Image: Characterizing Theology in the Poetry of Kathryn Stripling Byer," will focus on the Christian underpinnings of Byer's poetry and the feminist theology expressed therein. Mrs. Howard's paper will then be published in The Iron Mountain Review. Other speakers at the Festival will be Sarah Kennedy of Mary Baldwin College, Robert West from Wake Forest University, novelist Lee Smith, and of course, Kathryn Stripling Byer.
