I envisioned myself in an attractive safari outfit feeding lions cubs and other exotic offspring from a bottle. Betsy's autobiography is shown as a 'comic' strip. Here are some questions that you can think about ..
What was the discovery that Betsy made in 1931 that changed her life? Why were her knees always bleeding? What kind of 'wild life' did she discover in 1940? Did Betsy meet Ed BEFORE she left college? What was Betsy's 'maiden' name How did Guy feel about it? So what is a REJECTION? When did the Grandchildren arrive? Most writers seem to write where Betsy writes ..... How does Betsy get around quickly? So what does she keep downstairs? Look at Betsy's comments about the people in her books ..... where do you think that they come from?

Betsy Byars Betsy Byars began her writing career rather late in life. "In all of my school years, . . . not one single teacher ever said to me, 'Perhaps you should consider becoming a writer,'" Byars recalls. "Anyway, I didn't want to be a writer. Writing seemed boring. You sat in a room all day by yourself and typed. If I was going to be a writer at all, I was going to be a foreign correspondent like Claudette Colbert in Arise My Love. I would wear smashing hats, wisecrack with the guys, and have a byline known round the world. My father wanted me to be a mathematician." So Byars set out to become mathematician, but when she couldn't grasp calculus in college, she turned to English. Even then, writing was not on her immediate horizon. First, she married and started a family. The writing career didn't emerge until she was 28, a mother of two children, and living in a small place she called the barracks apartment, in Urbana, Illinois. She and her husband, Ed, had moved there in 1956 so he could attend graduate school at the University of Illinois. She was bored, had no friends, and so turned to writing to fill her time.
Since that time, Byars has written more than 45 books for young readers and has won numerous awards. Among them are the Newbery Medal, which she received in 1971 for

Techniques and Themes
Judith Callaway-Schaefer Betsy Byars is a prolific author of children's books, who began writing in the 1960s and has continued until the present. She has written about forty books, the most recent one being Tornado. Byars is popular: her books are sought in school libraries, and The Summer of the Swans won the Newbery Award in 1971. Although all of Byars' writing is fiction for children and young adults, it can arbitrarily be divided into three categories: (1) the fiction before the mid-1980s, all of which seems at least wistful (The Midnight Fox) if not downright somber (The Cartoonist). A subdivision of this category would be the books that use animals as a major part of the story. These first writings have the widest range of appeal as they are more realistic than the books after this time, and some even have great appeal for adults; (2) the cheerful recent books (the Bingo series, Coast to Coast, the Blossom series, etc.) for children 10 to 14 years old; (3) the novels written for beginning readers (the Golly Sisters series).

Moon and I
by Byars, Betsy . (Messner, 1992 ISBN 0688137040 Paperback ) Nonfiction. Grades 4+. This book was reviewed by Carol Otis Hurst in Teaching K-8 Magazine
Review
With a light and humorous touch, Ms. Byars tells of the way she writes her books. Throughout the account, she also tells of her relationship with a snake, Moon, which she found near her cabin. Her need to learn more about snakes in general and Moon in particular became an obsession that, for a brief time, dominated her existence. That obsession, the reasons for it, and the ways in which she conducted her research are so interesting and helpful that you want to read the brief book aloud at the outset of a research project.
