This was to Keningale Cook, editor of The University Magazine, and publisher of Blackmore's well-known poem, "Dominus Illuminatio Meo (In memoriam M.F.G.)." Date : 1973 June Pages Institution : SUNY College of Environmental Science and Forestry ABSTRACT: The United States Air Force and communities next to its air installations are faced with the problem of aircraft use of airspace over private land and the private use of this land for urban expansion. This joint land-use problem results from the interaction of the noise and accident potential of modern jet aircraft with certain residential, commercial and industrial uses of land adjacent to air installations. The sound emissions of jet aircraft have a particularly disturbing effect upon residential land use. Aircraft accidents could involve both homes and large numbers of people in non-residential developments when they are located beneath airfield flight patterns. The performance and safety of aircraft operations are also affected by urban growth. Performance levels at some airbases have been reduced and a few have been closed. Community complaints about noise and hazards were a primary factor, according to the Air Force, in these decisions. Flight hazards can also result from visual and electronic emissions from heavy industry. Thus, air installations and their adjacent communities have to reduce or eliminate hazards that affect their co-existence. This study examines the reaction of 181 communities to the United States Air Force proposal to limit incompatible land uses adjacent to its airfields. The proposal-Air Installation Compatible Use Zone (AICUZ) seeks the support of political subdivisions to regulate the development of land adjacent to airfields.
