Samuel Butler (1835 - 1902)
Samuel Butler spent only three years in New Zealand as a runholder in the headwaters of the Rangitata before returning to England, but the Canterbury experience gave him a significant base for a literary achievement of great distinction, and a well deserved reputation for irony and controversy. His most famous works, Erewhon Erewhon Revisited and The Way of All Flesh made him a cult figure in Britain and a leader in the intellectual emancipation from Victorian values. After his arrival in Lyttelton in 1859, Butler explored the Canterbury high country, found unclaimed sheep country, registered his claim against a rival after a famous race to Christchurch and called his station Mesopotamia ('between two rivers'). Resourceful and energetic, he doubled his capital and freed himself from the dominance of his father and the Anglican church at a time of great intellectual perplexity over the troubling findings of Charles Darwin. In the early chapters of Erewhon , Butler gave a realistic picture of the Canterbury high country and the land 'over the range', but the focus of the book is on the England he satirised through his description of Erewhonian society.

Tamen ili ankoraŭ neniam invitis min ilin akompani.

During the Civil War I was a member of Co. E., 3 rd Reg.N.H. Volunteers, Infantry. I joined the Reg. at Morris Island S.C. in the autumn of 1863. At Christmas, a Comrade belonging to another Company came to me, and he wished to borrow $5 til next pay as he was hard up . If I could accommodate him he would give me a field glass he was carrying in security till I was paid. I told him, I was glad I was able to help him, gave him the money and took the glass. We drilled here about three weeks and were ordered to Jacksonville, Florida to do front picket duty. Shortly after our arrival my comrade came to me again to borrow $5 on the same terms as before. I let him have the $5 and took the glass again which I suppose to be worth between $15 and $20. About the first of May we started up the River and in due time landed at Bermuda F. Hundreds. We spent about a week erecting forts and breastworks to protect our base. Then we made an advance.

Benjamin F. Butler On the 14 th I had the glass, which was in a thick leather case slung over my shoulder and under my blouse. It hung down in front and just above my belt. A bullet struck it point blank. It nearly knocked me down and quite took the wind out of me. I thought the summons had come to go hence. A hasty examination showed me that the glass had intercepted the bullet, and on looking on the inner side of the case I noticed it had not gone through, although the leather was badly bulged. With a fervent "Thank

to January 1662. About this time he married a rich lady, variously described as a Miss Herbert and as a widow named Morgan. His wifes fortune was afterwards, however, lost. Three monuments have been erected to the poets memory the first in Westminster Abbey in 1721, by John Barber, mayor of London, who is spitefully referred to by Pope for daring to connect his name with Butlers. In 1786 a tablet was placed in St Pauls, Covent Garden, by residents of the parish. This was destroyed in 1845. Later, another was set up at Strensham by John Taylor of that place. Perhaps the happiest epitaph on him is one by John Dennis, which calls Butler a whole species of poets in one. Hudibras itself, though probably quoted as often as ever, has dropped into, the class of books which are more quoted than read. In reading it, it is of the utmost importance to comprehend clearly and to bear constantly in mind the purpose of the author in writing it. This purpose is evidently not artistic but polemic, to show in the most unmistakable characters the vileness and folly of the anti-royalist party. Anything like a regular plot the absence of which has often been deplored or excused would have been for this end not merely a superfluity but a mistake, as likely to divert the attention and perhaps even enlist some sympathy for the heroes. Anything like regular characterdrawing would have been equally unnecessary and dangerous 1 Letters written by Eminent Persons - - - and Lives of Eminent Men, by John Aubrey, Esq. (2 vols., 1813).

Butler, Samuel (1835-1902) The English novelist Samuel Butler had a predilection for intense male friendships, which is reflected in several of his works. Butler was born on December 4, 1835, at Langar Rectory near Bingham, Nottinghamshire, England. He was both the son and grandson of Anglican clergy. He received his education at Shrewsbury School and St. John's College, Cambridge, where he earned a degree in 1858. Sponsor Message.
Although Samuel and his family had made plans for him to enter the ministry, he began to have doubts about his religion and ordination. After Cambridge, he worked briefly among the poor in London as a lay minister while trying to decide his future. In 1860, he emigrated to New Zealand and became a successful sheep rancher while publishing articles in the local press. Four years later, he returned to England, where he studied to become a painter and continued his writing. Much of Butler's work concerns his two primary interests, religion and evolution. He was particularly intrigued by the writings of Charles Darwin, an interest reflected in the extremely successful

Overview and text of the poem from ExClassics.

Hudibras by Samuel Butler.
Hudibras was written between 1660 and 1680 and is a satire on the Cromwellians and on the Presbyterian church written by a confirmed Royalist and Anglican. Hudibras, a colonel in the Cromwellian army, is involved in various comic misadventures and is shown to be stupid, greedy and dishonest. The poem is very well written in Chaucerian couplets and was popular for about 150 years, as long as its political attitudes were also popular. The Nineteenth Century saw the re-invention of Cromwell in the popular imagination from usurper and tyrant to heroic upholder of English freedom, and Hudibras was out. I feel it's time for a re-assessment, so here it is. Read Hudibras Online Download plain text version(561 Kb) (Zip format, 218 Kb) Encyclopaedia Britannica Article ... Back to Ex-Classics
