Lauren Olamina’s love is divided among her young daughter, her community, and the revelation that led Lauren to found a new faith that teaches “God is Change.” But in the wake of environmental and economic chaos, the US government turns a blind eye to violent bigots who consider the mere existence of a black female leader a threat. And soon Lauren must either sacrifice her child and her followers—or forsake the religion that can transform human destiny.
From the hardback inside cover: Parable of the Talents celebrates the usual Butlerian themes of alienation and transcendence, violence and spirituality, slavery and freedom, and separation and community, to astonishing effect in the shockingly familiar, broken world of 2032. A continuation of the travails of Lauren Olamina, the heroine of 1994 Nebula Award finalist

Interview with Octavia Butler "... one of the few African American women writing
in the male-dominated science fiction genre" by Joshunda Sanders
Oakland, California Octavia Butler is one of the few African American women writing in the male-dominated science fiction genre. Currently, she is on tour, celebrating the 25th Anniversary of the publication of Kindred
Octavia Butler.
Octavia Butler is one of the few African American women writing in the male-dominated science fiction genre. The worlds she creates with her pen are groundbreaking, powerful multicultural revisions of history; sometimes frightening and complex visions of the future. The author of twelve books and an award-winning collection of short stories, Butler was also the recipient of an esteemed MacArthur Fellowship grant in 1995 the only science fiction writer on a list of more than 600 names in the last 20 years. She's also won the most esteemed awards in the genre: the Hugo and Nebula wards for her books and short stories.

Octavia Butler (b. Octavia Estelle Butler is the first African-American woman to gain popularity and critical acclaim as a major science fiction writer. She was born on June 22, 1947 in Pasadena , California, to Laurice and Octavia M. (Guy) Butler. Butler was the only child of five pregnancies that her mother was able to carry to term. Her father, a shoeshine man, died when Butler was very young. Most of her memories are actually stories that she heard from her mother and grandmother. Her mother and she lived in a very racially mixed neighborhood. The unifying factor was the struggle to make ends meet. Butler "never personally experienced the more rigid forms of a segregated society" Butler was very shy in school, and describes herself as a day dreamer . These factors made it very difficult to succeed in school. She overcame dyslexia, and began writing when [she] was 10 years old...to escape loneliness and boredom.. At age twelve she became interested in science fiction. aliens ' help.

Humans seeking refuge within an alien civilization would need to earn their keep. But what if all they had to trade was themselves? In Octavia Butler's "Bloodchild", humans practice a twisted variation of the oldest profession in trade for their sanctuary with the Tlic. The trade is dangerous, gruesome, and sometimes deadly, but a few must serve so that the rest can live. The chilling saga of a boy's initiation into this world of adult choices is quintessential Butler and won her both the Hugo and Nebula awards. Butler is famous for her novels, tight, compelling full length tales about thought-provoking social and genetic issues. In comparison, "Bloodchild" is like a cask of fine wine distilled down to its essential spirit. It is powerful, short-lived pleasure that burns all the way down.
Bloodchild , the book, collects five short stories and two essays about writing. The selection spans Butler's career, ranging from relatively recent back to the first story she ever sold. A short afterword accompanies each piece, in which Butler describes its genesis and her perspective while writing it. For admirers, like myself, this chance to see the world through Octavian eyes is not to be missed. For those yet unfamiliar with her work a warning: reading this collection will engender a taste for Octavia Butler that will only be satisfied by more. Fortunately, there is more (ten novels; Patternmaster, Mind of My Mind, Survivor, Kindred, Wild Seed, Clay's Ark, Dawn, Adulthood Rites, Imago
