Born in 1947, Octavia E. Butler established herself in the SF field beginning in the 1970s with the publication of her Patternist series. As one of the first African-American science fiction writers, and indeed one of a few women breaking the formidable SF gender barrier, she brought a fresh new voice to the genre. She is now regarded as one of the best writers in the business. Her books tend to focus on the nature of difference, and she has written some of the most convincing portrayals of truly alien life forms in science fiction. The Earthseed series, which began with Parable of the Sower and continues in Parable of the Talents , tells the story of the genesis of a simple, humanist religion Earthseed in a dystopian near-future Earth. One of the central tenets of Earthseed is that humanity's destiny is to leave Earth and become a starfaring race. Butler spoke with Amazon.com's Therese Littleton and Bonnie Bouman about the Earthseed series, how she got started writing, and what it's like to be the "grande dame of science fiction." Amazon.com:

OCTAVIA BUTLER COUNTY The first settlers in the northern part of Butler County were actually on their way to the gold fields of Colorado in the early 1860s. While camping several days west of Omaha, they were told by returning travelers that it was fruitless to continue their journey. Not wanting to go back, they decided to make their homes right here. The fertile valley between the Platte River and the foothills to the south must have seemed like the Promised Land as they set about building homes, barns, and a school. Primarily of Pennsylvania Dutch lineage, the settlement later included English, Irish, Dutch, and German immigrants. The building of the transcontinental railroad north of the Platte in 1866-67 brought a surge of settlers to the area and the opportunity for jobs. A "subscription school," funded by the families of children attending, was established. West of the school a small building called the Blue Valley Church was shared by three denominations. It is said that a mail station was established two miles east in the home of a Mr.Fitzsimmons. The first train arrived on August 15, 1887, but the post office was not officially commissioned until January 27, 1888. Like many railroad towns, Octavia grew rapidly. An 1889 account from a David City newspaper states, "A recently established town, Octavia...population 125, chiefly farmers, receive mail at that point. The town is well located and has fine prospects to be an important town."

At first, I began placing my most recently read books on its shelves simply because they were empty. Its deep shelves have long since been stacked and double stacked beyond capacity. Think of this bookshelf as a map. With this map, I (and now you) can follow a few of the paths my mind has wandered down. Home Octavia Butler’s Xenogenesis Trilogy: A Biologist’s Response by Joan Slonczewski, presented at SFRA, Cleveland, June 30, 2000 Octavia E. Butler’s novels share with readers her extraordinary vision of what it means to be "other," based on intelligent biological speculation. Her Xenogenesis trilogy, now retitled Lilith’s Brood for reissue by Warner creates a stunningly vision of abduction and seduction by an alien species. This vision is presented in terms remarkably consistent with modern molecular biology, even predicting developments that have occurred since the novels were written. As the trilogy’s first book, Dawn, opens, the human race has nearly destroyed itself by nuclear war"humanicide," as Butler calls ita fate that seemed all too plausible in the eighties, when the book was written, and that remains a distinct possibility if the effects of humanity on our environment are not reversed. The few humans who survive the war are rescued and captured by the Oankali, a nomadic alien species that travels through the universe seeking partner species with whom to "trade" their own genes. The story is told from the viewpoint of Lilith Iyapo, a human woman whom the Oankali adopt into their family and try to enlist in recruiting other humans. Lilith is torn between accepting the medical enhancements and the sexual advances of her captors while trying to help other humans escape. Unlike the vast majority of alien abduction tales

Octavia E. Butler. Parable of the Sower . Aspect/Warner. 1993
Review:
Octavia Butler manages to evoke a vivid image of civilisation caught mid-decline. Rather than the more usual post-apocalypse novel, this depicts a slow but inevitable descent into barbarism, where enough of the old world is still around for people to realise what they're losing. It's brilliantly, if grimly, depicted, by following the viewpoint of Lauren Olamina as she grows to adulthood through various crises. Interwoven with this is her development of a new religion, Earthseed. I'm not too keen on the religion side of it (although I have a feeling that it is supposed to be the important point), but the grimly painted future and the gutsy, competent protagonist make this a memorable read.

Introduction
Butler is incredible, but she is not comfortable. She confronts the reader with shocking images and portrays people in all their unnerving complexity. Yet she does not do so gratuitously, but rather with a fine-tuned sense of human emotions and a clear view of her goal. Her subjects are usually apocalyptic in style, and she delights in worlds on the brink of violent change. If you want to be moved, be taught, be led to the fountain of wisdom, read these books. If you want to relax and not think too much, don't. Don't say I didn't warn you.
Patternist
The most disturbing novel of Butler's I have read is Wildseed . I have never seen another book with the same world premise. Doro, a man who personifies the power of the mind, has learned to leap from body to body, killing the minds of his hosts and leaving them behind like garbage. Anyanwu is a woman born centuries ago, a shapeshifter, mother of tribes, healer, protector. When they meet, they join in a titanic struggle for the future of all the strange ones, their world-wide tribe of rare talents that often drive them mad- as Doro and Anyanwu might be mad. But such things are irrelevent; only survival matters, survival and power. But two such irreconcilable people cannot share such awesome power. This novel contains excellent historical research from both Africa and the American colonies (North and South). It is also very different from most books in the genre.

"Clay's Ark"
The central character, Eli, is the only survivor of a ship wreck (space ship, that is), and is carrying an alien disease/life form that redesigns the human body and is intent on taking over all human bodies. The "disease" is highly communicable and the alien life form drives it's host to thrive for physical contact. What makes this book interesting is how Elli strives to keep his humanity by trying to "contain" this disease and the measures he and his "family" must take to "feed" this alien life form. OK, I've told you enough! Go pick up your own copy! You'll not be disappointed by Ms. Butler's writing style and story. This book is number five in the "Patternist" series. I didn't miss not having read the others first, the story stands on its own. Amazon.com reader rating:

EMBRACING OTHERNESS An Examination of Octavia Butler’s Xenogenisis Trilogy by Mary M. Talbot This article was adapted from a paper given at the SPEAKING SCIENCE FICTION Conference at the University of Liverpool (11-13 July 1996) by Mary Talbot. Octavia Butler gives a new slant to the alien human encounter in her Xenogenesis series of books, where the aliens are genetic engineers and gene traders. But is it a more optimistic view of humanity? DIFFERENCE-EMBRACING ALIENS Octavia Butler uses sf to explore cultural possibilities, rather than scientific and technological ones. She writes about class divisions, particularly racism and sexism, about slavery and the power relationships nurtured by such an institution. She writes, too, about unrealised human potential, largely in terms of latent mental abilities. Her stories usually involve a motley group of culturally diverse people striving to form a community. These observations are true of the Patternist books, of Kindred and The Parable of the Sower (except I don’t think Parable shares the preoccupation with slavery). They are elements that are all manifest in her Xenogenesis books. From the outset, Humans are a degraded people, to say the least. Before the narrative begins, humanity is on the point of extinction as a result of nuclear war in the northern hemisphere. The few lingering remnants are dying in the nuclear winter. They are rescued by aliens and put on ice; that is, restored to health and kept in suspended animation. Until Needed. The aliens, called Oankali, are gene traders. More than this, they are gene manipulators. The Xenogenesis series is about the human race which, having all but wiped itself out, is being given a second chance as ‘trading partners’, as the Oankali cutely put it; that is, as breeding stock for a genetically-engineered new species combining Human and Oankali. The Humans are not keen on the idea (‘But it won’t be human [...] It will be a thing. A monster’ (Dawn p262)). The remnants of humanity are given a Hobson’s Choice between extinction and compliance. They are reduced to no more than livestock, experimental animals.

Octavia Butler Selected participants share their career background and interests with you. Why did you become a writer?
I came to be a writer by accident. I discovered I liked it, really. I was writing when I was 10 years old, and I was writing to get away from my boring life, so fantasy was a natural. And a couple of years later, I saw a bad movie called "Devil Girl from Mars," and watching it on television, I sat there and said, "Jeez, I could write a better story than that. Anybody can write a better story than that." And finally, it hit me that someone had got paid for writing that bad story, so I grabbed my notebook and began to write. And I didn't see the end of that movie until many years later, when a Texas fan actually gave me a copy of it and I watched it, and I kind of admired my good taste as a 12 year-old.
Whom do you admire most, and why?
I began trying to sell stories when I was 13, and I would just if I found somebody I liked I would read everything I could find that they'd written. And that's how I discovered John Bruner and Marion Zimmer Bradley and Harlan Ellison and J.T. McIntosh and a number of other old-time writers, people who were writing a lot when I was a kid. Because it was nice to find somebody dependable. And I could just go back and find everything that they'd done that was at the library or the Salvation Army bookstore.
What advice do you have for young people?

Explanation
Impact on teaching literature Incorporating critical pedagogy in the classroom Benefits and challenges of using a critical pedagogy approach
Explanation
Critical pedagogy encourages students to respond to texts not just as literary critics, but as politically aware members of a community.
One of the central tenets of critical pedagogy, especially as it is outlined by education scholar Paulo Freire, is the establishment of classrooms in which teachers and students learn together. Critical pedagogy allows students to speak with greater authority because they are drawing on knowledge they already possess. While discussing creative assignments, moreover, teachers and students can create a dialogue in which they both learn about the issues they mutually face. At the same time, teachers can help students to find their own voices and their own capacity for action. In this mode, students generate questions and determine the direction of their studies, while teachers participate as equal, fellow members of their shared community.

Octavia E. Butler Octavia Estelle Butler was born on this date in 1947. She is and African-American writer and the first African-American woman to gain popularity and critical acclaim as a major science fiction writer.
She was born in Pasadena, California, the only child of five pregnancies that her mother was able to carry to term. Her father’s name was Laurice and her mother, Octavia M. (Guy) Butler. Her father was a shoeshine man and died when Butler was very young. Her mother and she lived in a very racially mixed neighborhood, where many of her memories are stories that she heard from her mother and grandmother. Butler was very shy in school, a daydreamer that made school very difficult.
She overcame dyslexia, and began writing at ten to escape loneliness and boredom; around the age of 12 became interested in science fiction. Butler received an Associate of Arts degree in 1968 from Pasadena City College, then attended California State University, Los Angeles and the University of California, Los Angeles. Much of her success came from the Open Door Program of the ScreenWriters Guild of America and the Clarion Science Fiction Writers Workshop. Butler also spent time researching developments in biology, the physical sciences, and genetics. While attending school Butler held down a lot of odd jobs. Her work experiences come through in the character of Dana in her novel “Kindred.” Butler has won several awards for her writing.
