Virtual Marginalia Book title: Parable of the Sower Author: Octavia Butler Posted October 12, 2001 Parable of the Sower imagines what the near future might be like if we as a society make (or continues to make) a mistake. In this case, the mistake is walling off communities in the face of poverty. I found the setting intriguing. People with homes and jobs live behind walls and fight off those who have nothing. It's terrifying. No one has a future, not even the "haves," because there simply isn't enough to go around. Extended families live crammed together, with 15-20 people living in a three bedroom home. Birth control is either illegal or expensive (I tend to think expensive, although it's not totally clear); no one uses it and families with four or more children are the norm. Lauren Olamina is a sharer, an empath, living in such a walled community. The book spans three years of her life, from her 15th birthday through her 18th. During that time, the world changes dramatically and for the worse. Her community is destroyed and she is forced to run for her life. She loses everything. Through it all, she builds her philosophy. On the surface, the book is about Lauren's survival. More deeply, it is about change how we deal with it, prepare for it and live through it. Lauren faces the questions: how bad do things have to be before you change them? before you change yourself?

Several years ago, when I was about to start a novel, I thought I might get some mileage out of the idea of a civilization in which people somehow felt that is, they shared all the pain and all the pleasure they caused one another. The point was to create, in fiction at least, a tolerant, peaceful civilization a world in which people were inclined either to accept one another's differences or at least to behave as though they accepted them since any act of resentment they commit would be punished immediately, personally, inevitably. Eventually, though, I chose not to write about such an empathic society. I wrote instead about a single empathic woman who suffered from the delusion that she shared other people's pleasure and pain. She was not a particularly peaceful woman, but she did have to consider the consequences of her behavior more than other undeluded people had to. After all, delusional pain hurts just as much as pain from actual trauma. So what if it's all in your head?

Other Resources Brief Bio: Hi! I'm originally from Morristown, New Jersey. I attended undergrad in Massachusetts at Wheaton College , a small (then women's) liberal arts college, where I began my work in American Studies/Literature. I also participated in the Wheaton Chorale and acted as a peer tutor for the English Department. After Wheaton, I went to Purdue University for my master's and doctoral degrees. I received my Ph.D. from Purdue University in West Lafayette, Indiana in May, 1999 in American Studies. My major field is contemporary American literature, and I have secondary fields in pre-1865 American literature, women’s history, and women’s studies. I am heading to California State University, Sacramento, this summer (2001) to teach in their Humanities/Religious Studies program. I will be teaching multicultural studies, film, and western civilization. My past experience includes the following: I taught classes for ten years at Purdue, including freshman composition (regular and advanced), sports and literature, science fiction and fantasy literature, film, and women’s studies. Last year and this year, I have been working as a visiting assistant professor of English at, respectively, Illinois College and Austin College , both of which are small liberal arts colleges. In 2000-2001, I have taught Writing, Topics in 20th-Century American Literature: Multicultural Literature of the Americas, Studies in American Literature of the 20th-Century: American Space and Identity, and Introduction to Literature.
