GENERAL LINKS Born Octavia Estelle Butler on June 22, 1947, in Pasadena, California. She earned an Associates degree at Pasadena City College (A.A., 1968), and attended California State University, and the University of California at Los Angeles, the Open Door Program of the Screen Writers' Guild of America and the Clarion SF Writers' Workshop. Encouraged by master science fiction author Harlan Ellison, she began her writing career in 1970 and made her genre debut with Crossover (1971), the first of many works in which she weaves together African-American history, future soceties and a highly intellectual exploration of the alien perspective. Although she has remained within the genre, Octavia Butler, along with Samuel Delany , is one of the two African American writers of note at the top of science fiction. The first of her novels, Patternmaster (1976), was the beginning of her five-volume Patternist series about an elite group of mentally linked telepaths ruled by Doro, a 4,000-year-old immortal African. Other novels in the series are Mind of My Mind Survivor Wild Seed (1980) which won the James Tiptree Award, and

Photo by Miriam Berkley Rites Writer: Octavia E. Butler Novelist and short-story writer Octavia Butler defies categories By J. Douglas Allen Taylor I saw Octavia Butler at a book-reading and question-and-answer session in San Francisco a few years ago. This was after the success of the Xenogenesis trilogy ( Dawn Imago and Adulthood Rites ) and her winning of some of science-fiction's top writing awards but before her receipt of the MacArthur "genius" grant helped introduce the author's work to a larger audience. In those middle years, Butler was feeling more than a little pigeonholed. She did not really think of herself as a science-fiction writer, she explained, but more as a chronicler of the human heart using science fiction as a tool of revelation. The publishers and the reading public had no trouble looking at Margaret Atwood in that way. Why not Octavia Butler? She was being a little disingenuous, I think. Judging from the type of questions Butler got that night, many of her readers are less science-fiction fans and more feminists, with a strong African American contingent (not surprising, considering the fact many of Butler's heroines are strong, African American women). So she was already bridging many less-traveled gaps. And, after all, Butler did start out her career submitting to all those Weird Science and Isaac Asimov magazines.

I was working out of a casual labor agencywe regulars called it a slave market. You sat and sat until the dispatcher sent you out on a job or sent you home. Home meant no money. Getting sent out meant minimum wageminus Uncle Sam's sharefor as many hours as you were needed. You swept floors, stuffed envelopes, took inventory, washed dishes, sorted potato chips (really!), cleaned toilets, marked prices on merchandise...you did whatever you were sent out to do. It was nearly always mindless work, and as far as most employers were concerned, it was done by mindless people. Nonpeople rented for a few hours, a few days, a few weeks. I did the work, I went home, I ate, and then I slept for a few hours. Finally, I got up and wrote. - Kindred

Butler received an Associate of Arts degree in 1968 from Pasadena City College. She then attended California State University, Los Angeles and the University of California, Los Angeles. She credits her success to nonacademic programs, though. Two of these programs are the Open Door Program of the Screen Writers Guild of America and the Clarion Science Fiction Writers Workshop. While attending school Butler held down a lot of odd jobs. Her work experiences come through in the character of Dana in her novel Kindred (as quoted above). Butler also spends time researching developments in biology, the physical sciences, and genetics.

May, 2000 by Octavia E. Butler
The science-fiction author looks ahead at what we can and cannot know "SO DO YOU REALLY believe that in the future we're going to have the kind of trouble you write about in your books?" a student asked me as I was signing books after a talk. The young man was referring to the troubles I'd described in Parable of the Sower and Parable of the Talents, novels that take place in a near future of increasing drug addiction and illiteracy, marked by the popularity of prisons and the unpopularity of public schools, the vast and growing gap between the rich and everyone else, and the whole nasty family of problems brought on by global warming. "I didn't make up the problems," I pointed out. 'All I did was look around at the problems we're neglecting now and give them about 30 years to grow into full-fledged disasters.'
