James Butler Bonham
James B. Bonham was born at Flat Grove in present-day Saluda County, SC on February 20, 1807. He was probably an acquaintance of William B. Travis before the Travis family moved on Alabama. His brother, Milledge Luke Bonham , served as a Colonel in the U.S. Army and a Brigadier General in the Confederate Army. M.L. Bonham also served in the State House, U.S. Congress, Confederate Congress and as South Carolina Governor from 1862-1864. Bonham led a student revolt over poor food and attendance regulations at South Carolina College (later USC) and was expelled along with the whole senior class. He was found in contempt of court after caning another lawyer who insulted his female client and refusing to apologize for it (instead he threatened to tweak the judge's nose.) Bonham was an aide to Governor James Hamilton during the Nullification crisis in 1832. In 1834, he was practicing law in Mobile, Alabama, and led rally of support for the Texans in 1835. Bonham arrived in Texas in November of 1835 and volunteered his services to Sam Houston and turned down all pay or compensation. He was in the garrison at the Alamo and was sent by Travis to Bexar seeking aid. He returned on March 3 in time for Santa Anna's attack on the 6th. Bonham reportedly died manning a cannon in the interior of the chapel. The town of Bonham, Texas, named for him.
