Gravity
Monika says:
Ever since Nicolaus Copernicus has presented his heliocentric worldview in the 16 th Century, which as we know didn't win him glory and friends, the research of gravity is a key part of physics. The same forces that keep the planets in their orbits around the sun are active all throughout the cosmos and on Earth make sure that objects are falling to the ground like the famous apple that as legend has it inspired Isaac Newton to "invent" the law of gravity. In the science fiction world we are used to interstellar space ships and space stations with artificial gravity and don't waste a thought on how this is actually achieved. Up to this day nobody has managed to control gravity. James Butler's first novel GRAVITY tells the story of Charles Freeman, a scientist with the ambitious goal to utilize gravity for the benefit of humanity. Freeman lives in a world that is not so very different from our own. In the future it will not be any easier to get funding for research projects, especially when they don't bring immediate success. Controlling gravity? Who would fund such an ambitious and hopeless project? It's not easy to cut through all the red tape and that is more than true if you want to try your luck off the beaten paths. Freeman is lucky to interest a rich industrialist for his research and win his support. But there's a price for everything. Freeman gets tangled in a web of intrigue and stumbles over the tracks of one Wanita Sanchez, a scientist also interested in gravity research who vanished a while ago without a trace.

James Butler
BUTLER, James, soldier, born in Prince William county, Virginia; died in South Carolina in 1781. He immigrated to South Carolina about 1772, settling in what was then a frontier region, took part in General Richardson's "Snow-Camp Expedition," and afterward in a similar expedition under General Williamson, in 1776. Butler joined General Lincoln near Augusta in 1779, when the latter had taken command of the southern continental forces, and after the fall of Charleston, in 1780, he was one of those who refused to swear allegiance to the British crown, and was lodged in the jail at Ninety-Six. He was afterward taken to the provost of Charleston, then to the prison-ship, and was kept in close confinement for eighteen months. After his release, he was summoned to repel a foray of the Tories of his precinct, and was killed at Cloud's creek. TM

BONHAM, JAMES BUTLER (1807-1836). James Bonham, officer of the Alamo garrison, son of James and Sophia Butler (Smith) Bonham, was born at Red Banks (present-day Saluda), Edgefield County, South Carolina, on February 20, 1807. Recent evidence indicates that he was a second cousin of William B. Travis. qv Bonham entered South Carolina College (later the University of South Carolina) in the fall of 1823 but never graduated. During his senior year he led a student protest against the poor food served at the college and the obligation of students to attend class in bad weather. He and a number of other students, perhaps the entire senior class, were expelled. Bonham took up the study of law and began practicing in Pendleton, South Carolina, in 1830. On one occasion he caned an opposing lawyer who insulted Bonham's female client. When ordered to apologize by the judge, Bonham threatened to tweak the judge's nose and was promptly sentenced to ninety days for contempt of court. In 1832, during the nullification crisis, Bonham served as an aide to South Carolina governor James Hamilton, a position that brought him the rank of lieutenant colonel. At the same time he served as captain of a Charleston artillery company. By October 1834 he was practicing law in Montgomery, Alabama. On October 17, 1835, he led a rally of support for the Texan cause at the Shakespeare Theater in Mobile. Three days later he was elected by citizens of Mobile to carry their resolutions of support to Sam Houston.

9. Joseph Butler, Bishop Of Durham, Theologian
james Kiefer discusses butler's arguments against Deism.
http://justus.anglican.org/resources/bio/187.html
Butler was born in 1692 and ordained in 1718. In 1726 he published Fifteen Sermons, preached at the Rolls Chapel in London, and chiefly dealing with human nature and its implications for ethics and practical Christian life. He maintained that it is normal for a man to have an instinct of self-interest, which leads him to seek his own good, and equally normal for him to have an instinct of benevolence, which leads him to seek the good of others individually and generally, and that the two aims do not in fact conflict. He served as parish priest in several parishes, and in 1736 was appointed chaplain to Queen Caroline, wife of King George II. In the same year he published his masterpiece, The Analogy of Religion, Natural and Revealed, To the Constitution and Course of Nature (often cited simply as "Butler's Analogy"), a work chiefly directed against Deism, of which more will be said below. Appended to the main work was a treatise, Of the Nature of Virtue, which establishes him as one of the foremost British writers on ethics, or moral philosophy. When the Queen died in 1737, Butler was made Bishop of Bristol. (In England at that time, bishoprics and parish churches were supported each by a separate source of income that had been established for it perhaps centuries earlier, and in consequence the funding was very unequal. Bristol, being the lowest paid of all bishoprics, was where a new bishop usually started. Later, he might be promoted to another diocese. The Reform movement of the 1830's and its aftermath have remedied this situation.) However, George II had been impressed with him earlier, and in 1746 he was called back to court and the next year offered the post of Archbishop of Canterbury. He refused the post, but in 1750 he became Bishop of Durham (in the north of England, near the Scottish border, and well known even then as having a tradition of bishops whose speeches and writings attract public attention). He died there on 16 June 1752.

Gravity
Monikas Meinung:

ST. JAMES THE LESS, APOSTLE. Feast: May 3 See Tillemont, t. 1, p. 405; Ceillier, t. 1, p. 422. The oriental liturgy or mass, which bears the name of this apostle, is mentioned by Proclus, patriarch of Constantinople, and by the council in Trullo, and is of venerable antiquity. St. Basil, indeed, testifies,18 that the words of the sacred invocation in the consecration of the bread and of the cup, were not committed to writing, but learned and preserved by tradition down to the fourth century, which was done on a motive of respect and veneration: but other parts of the liturgy were written. Perhaps St. James gave only general directions about this liturgy, upon whose plan it was afterwards drawn up or enlarged. His singular learning in sacred matters is extolled by St. Clement of Alexandria,19 and St. Jerome.20 Endnotes 1 B. 2, c. 1, 23. 2 John II. 12. 3 1 Cor. xv. 7. 5 In Gal. p. 164. 6 Haer. 87. 7 Haer. 29. 8 Eus b. 3, c. 24. 9 B. 2, c. 23. 10 In Jovin. b. 2, c. 24. 11 Haer. 78. 12 Orig. in Cels. l. 1, p. 35. 13 Heges. apud Eus. ib.

Marion Butler and American Populism

by James L. Hunt
Introduction
For the historian and biographer the most important dimension to Butler's life was his endurance in trying to convert his economic ideas into law through politics. Butler's, and Populism's, greatest struggle was not to create a pro-producer ideology that would promote some forms of government regulation and ownership while at the same time sustaining the competitive market. The real challenge, one that Butler spent the fifty years between 1888 and 1938 trying to meet, was the political success of that ideology. That task involved the enormously complex project of building local, state, and national organizations that would attract followers, conduct elections, send believers to state and national legislatures, and enact and carry out Populist laws. This political project turned out to be Populism's greatest failure, and Butler's life, perhaps more than that of any other person, illustrates this part of the Populist story. When I started this project almost twenty years ago, there was relatively little detailed information about Butler. With some notable exceptions, practically all that had been written about him was negative, sketchy, or merely descriptive. No one had published a full biography. More specifically, no one had considered all the key evidence: the newspapers he edited between 1888 and 1913; his votes, committee actions, and speeches as a North Carolina and United States legislator; or his personal papers through 1938. Most of what was written about Butler focused on the few months in the summer and fall of 1896 when he led the Populist Party in that year's presidential election.[1]
