William Seward Burroughs was one of the most important literary figures of the twentieth century. Jack Kerouac has called him "the greatest satirical writer since Jonathan Swift," and Norman Mailer went so far as to say he was "the only American writer concievably possessed by genius." The conventional methods of writing were getting old and tiresome, and Burroughs helped to make literature unpredictable and exciting again. Burroughs wanted to create a "literature of risk," in which the writer was an outlaw, or at least an outsider, in the midst of society and most "acceptable" writers.
Burroughs was born on February 5, 1914, in St. Louis, Missouri. Burroughs himself, in the introduction to a reprint of Junky, that he was an unpopular child. As an adolescent, he often grew romantically attached to his male friends, and he was fascinated by guns, drugs, and crime.
After graduating from Harvard, where he majored in English, Burroughs moved to New York and became part of the underground drug scene. He became friends with Jack Kerouac and Allen Ginsberg, who were then students at Columbia University. Eventually, the two young writers convinced Burroughs to write about his own life. His first book, Junky, was published as half of a "two-books-in-one" pulp paperback. Burroughs never considered himself a writer until he accidentally shot his wife, Joan Vollmer Burroughs, in the head while doing his "William Tell act." After this incident, Burroughs believed himself to be possessed by an invader, the "Ugly Spirit," and his only escape from this affliction was to "write his way out," explains his editor James Grauerholz.

His first novel, Junkie (1953), documented his heroin addiction and expatriation to Mexico, where in 1951 he accidentally killed his common-law wife. He settled in Tangier in 1954 and wrote his celebrated anti-novel Naked Lunch (1959). A landmark federal court case deemed Naked Lunch In Paris, he developed collage-based techniques of writing, resulting in his cut-up science fiction trilogy

J.G. Ballard
Obituary for
William S. Burroughs

(The Guardian, August 4, 1997)
That William Burroughs lived to such an immense age is a tribute to the rejuvinating powers of a mis-spent life. More than half a century of heavy drug use failed to dim either his remarkably sharp mind or his dryly crackling humour. When I last saw him in London a few years ago he was stooped and easily tired, but little different from the already legendary figure I first met in the early 1960s at his service flat in Duke Street, St James.
Esquire had asked me to write a profile of him, but Burroughs, though courteous, was very suspicious. The baleful power of media empires already obsessed him. While his young boyfriend, "love" and "hate" tattooed on his knuckles, carved a roast chicken, Burroughs described the most effectively way to stab a man to death. All the while he kept an eye on the doors and windows. "The CIA are watching me," he confided. "They park their laundry vans in the street outside."
I don't think he was having me on. His imagination was filled with bizarre lore culled from Believe It Or Not features, police pulps and - in the case, I assume, of the laundry vans - Hollywood spy movies of the cold war years. When Burroughs talked about Time magaine's conspiracy to take over the world he meant it literally.

William S. Burroughs and Cut-up
By Dan Century
Inspired by Pan's review of WSB's Interzone in the June issue , I decided to write a piece on the Cut-up technique of writing utilized and pioneered by Burroughs and his associate Brion Gysin. For the uninitiated, the Cut-up technique was inspired by the collage technique used by artists and photographers. Often the greatest photographs and artwork happen by accident. An unexpected pedestrian walks into your shot, or an odd glob of paint scars your painting, and rather than tragedy you have something unexpected and spontaneous. Take this concept one step further and the artist can juxtapose various visual fragments with great and unexpected results. Gysin and Burroughs wanted to introduce the spontaneity and chance of the collage to the written word, and so they developed and utilized the Cut-up technique. The technique is simple. Take any page of writing. Take a scissors and cut it into four parts; cut straight across, down the middle, on angles, whatever. Now reassemble the parts at random. You now have a different text. Meaning, time lines and narratives are changed. The result may be quite similar to the original or shockingly different. The more cuts you make and the more sources you use, the more fun you'll have. The beauty of the Cut-up method is anyone can do it, and should do it; anyone can now be a great writer, if only by chance. Unfortunately this technique works better with paper than computer text, because you cannot easily (if at all) make vertical cuts on an electronic page. One method you could use would be to capture your screen as an image, and then use image editing software to cut it up, and OCR software to return it to text form.

In view of the fact that my articles and statements on Scientology may have influenced young people to associate themselves with the so called Church of Scientology, I feel an obligation to make my present views on the subject quite clear. Some of the techniques are highly valuable and warrant further study and experimentation. The E Meter is a useful device ... (many variations of this instrument are possible). On the other hand I am in flat disagreement with the organizational policy. No body of knowledge needs an organizational policy. Organizational policy can only impede the advancement of knowledge. There is a basic incompatibility between any organization and freedom of thought. Suppose Newton had founded a Church of Newtonian Physics and refused to show his formula to anyone who doubted the tenets of Newtonian Physics? All organizations create organizational necessities. It is precisely organizational necessities that have prevented Scientology from obtaining the serious consideration merited by the importance of Mr. Hubbard's discoveries. Scientologists are not prepared to accept intelligent and sometimes critical evaluation. They demand unquestioning acceptance. Mr. Hubbard's overtly fascist utterances (China is the real threat to world peace, Scientology is protecting the home, the church, the family, decent morals ... positively no wife swapping. It's a dirty Communist trick ... national boundaries, the concepts of RIGHT and WRONG against evil free thinking psychiatrist) can hardly recommend him to the militant students. Certainly it is time for the Scientologists to come out in plain English on one side or the other, if they expect the trust and support of young people. Which side are you on Hubbard, which side are you on?
