About the Author
American novelist, creator of the world famous character of Tarzan, one of the indispensable icons of popular culture. Burroughs also published science fiction and crime novels. Critics have considered Burroughs's fiction often crudely written and chauvinist. His books, however, are still widely read and usually more interesting than the films. It is true that Burroughs often portrayed Africans, Arabs or Asians as evil or comic, but the stories also contain several elements that have kept them 'politically correct': Waziri warriors are brave, and his cave girl Nadara and Dejah Thoris, the princess of Mars, are courageous and resourceful characters. Edgar Rice Burroughs was born in Chicago, Illinois, into a prosperous family. His father, George Tyler Burroughs, was a Civil War veteran. Burroughs attended several private schools, including the Michigan Military Academy, Orchar Lake (1892-95), where he was instructor and assistant commandant (1895-96). He served in the 7th Cavalry in the Arizona Territory (1896-97) and Illinois Reserve Militia (1918-19). After military career Burroughs was owner of a stationery store in Pocatello, Idaho (1898), and associated with American Battery Company, Chicago (1899-03). In 1900 he married Emma Centennia Hulbert (divorced in 1934); they had two sons and one daughter)

EDGAR RICE BURROUGHS OUTLAW OF TORN
Introduction by David Bruce Bozarth
The Outlaw of Torn, set in 13th century England, was Burroughs' first historical fiction work. His second was I Am A Barbarian, a tale of ancient Rome, which was published after his death in 1950.
To My Friend
JOSEPH E. BRAY CHAPTER I HERE is a story that has lain dormant for seven hundred years. At first it was suppressed by one of the Plantagenet kings of England. Later it was forgotten. I happened to dig it up by accident. The accident being the relationship of my wife's cousin to a certain Father Superior in a very ancient monastery in Europe. He let me pry about among a quantity of mildewed and musty manuscripts and I came across this. It is very interestingpartially since it is a bit of hitherto unrecorded history, but principally from the fact that it records the story of a most remarkable revenge and the adventurous life of its innocent victimRichard, the lost prince of England. In the retelling of it I have left out most of the history. What interested me was the unique character about whom the tale revolvesthe visored horseman whobut let us wait until we get to him. It all happened in the thirteenth century, and while it was happening it shook England from north to south and from east to west; and reached across the channel and shook France. It started, directly, in the London palace of Henry III, and was the result of a quarrel between the King and his powerful brother-in-law, Simon de Montfort, Earl of Leicester.

EDGAR RICE BURROUGHS THE MAD KING
Introduction by David Bruce Bozarth
World War I was on the horizon and Edgar Rice Burroughs was following the reports in the news media. He was also mining a distinctly American interest of European royalty when he penned The Mad King . This tale of confused identities and look-a-like characters was initially published in All-Story Weekly as The Mad King (part one) in March of 1914. The follow up of Lutha's (a fictional European monarchy) was "Barney Custer of Beatrice." This story appeared in Blue Book Magazine in August of the following year. This Prisoner of Zenda
PART I I. A RUNAWAY HORSE ALL LUSTADT was in an uproar. The mad king had escaped. Little knots of excited men stood upon the street corners listening to each latest rumor concerning this most absorbing occurrence. Before the palace a great crowd surged to and fro, awaiting they knew not what. For ten years no man of them had set eyes upon the face of the boy-king who had been hastened to the grim castle of Blentz upon the death of the old king, his father. There had been murmurings then when the lad's uncle, Peter of Blentz, had announced to the people of Lutha the sudden mental affliction which had fallen upon his nephew, and more murmurings for a time after the announcement that Peter of Blentz had been appointed Regent during the lifetime of the young King Leopold, "or until God, in His infinite mercy, shall see fit to restore to us in full mental vigor our beloved monarch."

    Edgar Rice Burroughs
    Barsoom Series
Perhaps best known for his Tarzan series, which is itself a cross of genres, Burroughs' Barsoom saga establishes Mars as the stage for SF and Fantsay protocols to mix indescriminantly. The stories recount the exploits of John Carter as he battles with various green, yellow, and black men before he wins the hand of the red-skinned princess Dejah Thoris. Although Carter's adventures take place on Mars, he travels there by magical means, and Barsoom itself is inconsistent and scientifically implausible.

    Biography:
Son of a wealthy family, Edgar Rice Burroughs was educated in private schools in Chicago. From 1897 to 1911, he tried to work in numerous but unsuccessful jobs and business ventures. After getting married and having three children, he began writing advertising and then he turned to fiction. In 1911, he published his first piece, Under the Moon of Mars , in the adventure magazine All-Story. It was so successful that he turned to writing full-time.
In 1912, the first Tarzan story appeared, narrating the adventures of this son of an English nobleman abandoned in the African jungle during infancy and adopted and raised by a tribe of great apes. In 1914, Burroughs publishes Tarzan of Apes , and the character instantly captured the popular fancy. Burroughs ultimately published 68 titles in all, from which 25 are about Tarzan. His Tarzan stories were translated to more than 50 languages and were also popular in comic-strip, motion-picture, television and radio versions.

Bio: Edgar Rice Burroughs, the writer who created Tarzan and fantastic tales of science fiction, was born February 23, 1875 in Chicago, Illinois to Major George Tyler Burroughs and Mary Evaline (Zieger). Burroughs unsuccessfully pursued a series of careers until he was 35 years old: soldier, cowboy, salesman, and other singular interests. It wasn't until his Oak Park years, between 1914 and 1919, that Burroughs became a successful author. While living in Chicago and Oak Park, Burroughs created many of his most memorable characters. The first Tarzan book, Tarzan the Ape Man , was completed in May 1912. Burroughs was also known for writings including the "John Carter of Mars" books, magazine stories, and many other published works. Burroughs captivated many children and adults alike with his imaginative tales. Today his legacy lives on in print, film, video and online.
