Audrey Bilger
New in paper Laughing Feminism focuses on comedy in the works of Frances Burney, Maria Edgeworth, and Jane Austen, authors who scrutinized the subjected prejudices against women in order to expose their absurdity and encourage readers to laugh at the folly of sexist views. Audrey Bilger shows that these women writers employed a full arsenal of comic weapons such as satire, burlesque, and parody to combat patriarchal nonsense and make comedy out of the discrepancies between the myth and reality of womanhood. Bilger draws on current feminist criticism, comic theory, and the methodologies of literary history to provide a context for re-assessing the novels of these writers. At a time when overt feminist statements could ruin a woman's reputation, comedy enabled these authors to smuggle feminism into their writing. "Laughing Feminism
"Bilger's refreshingly irreverent interpretation of scenes that have vexed more squeamish critics exemplifies a very American brand of feminism. . . ."

Burney's Journals and Letters , and Elizabeth Inchbald's A Simple Story I open this section of my website with copies of three brief essays I wrote on Burney which were published in the Burney Letter and links to a good scholarly bibliography. Now I have a story to tell about life on the Net and in particular one which records the kinds of experiences that can occur on an unmoderated list dedicated to a cult figure when someone tries to lead a serious reading in public space of a supposedly popular or a novel which is well-known by those who read or who have gone to college and taken "English" courses. This story may be of use to those who study group dynamics in cyberspace. It reveals some of the reasons it is very difficult to hold intelligent informed conversation in cyberspace without strong moderation or threshold control. In January 1998 while a group of people on Austen-l were reading Austen's Northanger Abbey together, I proposed to lead a group read on Austen-l of one of the novels Austen defends in her

Samuel Johnson and Frances Burney
A literary review of the portrayal of women in the writings of Johnson and Burney. Paper #: # of words: # of sources: Format: MLA Written: Author: Michael S
Abstract
From The Paper
"Johnson gave the most compassionate treatment to women and considered them equal to men. Many critics have supported this view and it is widely believed that Samuel Johnson's writings served an important purpose i.e. enlightenment of society regarding role of women. In his book, History of Rasellas and Rambler, we come across many interesting characters that help us understand Johnson's views on women and their role in the society. The most prominent is series of letter from Misella (a prostitute) to Mr. Rambler whereby she explain what it feels like to be a prostitute and how society treats such women."

Volume 1: Comedies. xlviii, 399; Volume 2: Tragedies. vi, 329. $150.00 Reviewed in University of Toronto Quarterly by John D. Baird Burney had begun writing plays fifteen years before that ill-fated premiere; her first comedy, The Witlings, was composed when the success of her epistolary novel Evelina (1778) had brought her into Mrs Thrale's circle at Streatham. Her father, the son of an Irish actor, dedicated to raising his family above its theatrical origins, persuaded her to suppress it. Frances sighed as a writer, but she obeyed as a daughter, and published instead her second novel, Cecilia (1782), an even greater success than its predecessor. Thanks to the pioneering work of Joyce Hemlow, scholars have long known of the existence of Burney's plays in manuscript (in some cases, multiple manuscripts), but their absence from the published canon has largely excluded them from critical consideration, and has thus seriously distorted studies of her career as a writer. Only three plays have been published hitherto: Edwy and Elgiva was printed from a copy in General d'Arblay's hand by M.J. Benkovitz (1957); there is an edition of A Busy Day by T G. Wallace (1984; valuable interpretive material); also a dissertation edition of The Witlings by C. Delery (1989); but critics have not always made use of what little has been available. The new edition thus puts on scholars' desks a huge chunk of the fabric of Burney's literary endeavours that has hitherto been inaccessible or frequently overlooked; we can expect significant reassessments of her career and achievement to follow.
