Born in 1849 at 385 Cheetham Hill Road in Manchester, the daughter of a small shopkeeper. Decline in the cotton industry led to diminishing fortunes after her father had died, at which time her mother sold up and moved them to Tennessee to live with her brother. Frances began to write short stories based on those in popular English magazines, with immediate success and recognition. After her marriage to a local doctor, her literary success conflicted with his work and they divorced in 1898. Her most famous novels were "That Lass o' Lowries" (1877), "Little Lord Fauntleroy" (1886) and "The Secret Garden" (1909). A controversial figure in later life, due to her strong-mindedness and her devotion to mystic cults. She died in 1924.

Burnett's life

The Secret Garden
Burnett's Life and Work Burnett's life follows the course of her most successful children's novels: she was born to comfort, reduced to (near-)poverty, then restored to wealth in adulthood. She was the middle of five children of a well-off family in Manchester, England. When she was four, her father died suddenly, reducing the family's circumstances considerably. Her mother maintained the family business for 10 years but the family moved increasingly into the ranks of the shabby genteel. With the support of an American uncle, the family moved to Knoxville, Tennessee in 1865; however, the new start does not appear to have reversed the family fortunes.
Like Alcott , Burnett felt responsible for relieving her family’s financial condition and tried teaching and raising geese before selling two stories for $35 to Godey’s Lady’s Book in 1868, at age 19 (Bixler). She was soon selling regularly to various magazines, and became a successful novelist 10 years later. Her current reputation rests almost completely on three children's books: Little Lord Fauntleroy A Little Princess (1905 though she wrote two earlier versions, the novel

Perhaps the things which happened could only have happened to me. I do not know. I never heard of things like them happening to any one else. But I am not sorry they did happen. I am in secret deeply and strangely glad. The Secret Garden
When Mary Lennox was sent to Misselthwaite Manor to live with her uncle everybody said she was the most disagreeable-looking child ever seen. It was true, too. She had a little thin face and a little thin body, thin light hair and a sour expression. A Lady of Quality
On a wintry morning at the close of 1690, the sun shining faint and red through a light fog, there was a great noise of baying dogs, loud voices, and trampling of horses in the court-yard at Wildairs Hall; The Lost Prince
There are many dreary and dingy rows of ugly houses in certain parts of London, but there certainly could not be any row more ugly or dingier than Philibert Place. A Little Princess She sat with her feet tucked under her, and leaned against her father, who held her in his arm, as she stared out of the window at the passing people with a queer old-fashioned thoughtfulness in her big eyes.

It is interesting to speculate if Mrs. Benett was an American or English author. One of the purposes of this website is to try to see what social trends in different countries can be found by assessing clothing styles. Mrs. Benett is difficult to categorize as she was born in England but lived in America. She clearly wrote for an international audience; she crossed the Atlantic numerous times after immigrating to Tennessee as a child. She seems to have remained very British at heart. Little Lord Fauntleroy , of course, was based on her all American son, Vivian . Even so, her book and resulting teatrical production was an enormous success in England suggesting the story appealed to both American and English sensibilities.
Some observers appear to categorize her as a clearly American author writing for an American audience. One observer opines, "I think her sentimentilizing of the `poor little rich boy' is more graphic in her Little Lord Fauntleroy . My question is, was she lamorizing the working class/farm boy Dickons and ridiuculing the infantile "lording" of Colin partly because she was an American?" (Collin was the sickly boy in her other well know book
