For my part, I looked on that sermon as the public declaration of a man much connected with literary caballers , and intriguing philosophers; with political theologians, and theological politicians, both at home and abroad. I know they set him up as a sort of oracle; because, with the best intentions in the world, he naturally philippizes , and chants his prophetic song in exact unison with their designs. That sermon is in a strain which I believe has not been heard in this kingdom, in any of the pulpits which are tolerated or encouraged in it, since the year 1648; when a predecessor of Dr. Price, the Rev. Hugh Peters , made the vault of the king's own chapel at St. James's ring with the honour and privilege of the saints, who, with the "high praises of God in their mouths, and a

Burke, Edmund
A Philosophical Enquiry into the Origin of our Ideas of the Sublime and Beautiful, by Edmund Burke (1729-97), was the early, revolutionary work of an author who went down in history as both a politician and the arch-theorist of anti-Jacobin conservatism ( Reflections on the Revolution in France, 1790). Yet the Enquiry begun in the 1740s, published in 1757, and revised in 1759became one of the most popular eighteenth-century treatises on aesthetics. Its originality does not consist so much in its approach to the aesthetic problem, essentially a psychological one, with its origins in John Locke, nor in its "Introduction on Taste," added in the second edition. In this discussion, intervening in a debate that was in full swing both in England and in France (as in Alexander Gerard's An Essay on Taste, 1759, which includes English translations of texts on the issue by Voltaire, Jean-Baptiste Le Rond d'Alembert, and the baron de Montesquieu), Burke draws conclusions developed over the course of the whole Enquiry in order to demonstrate the universality of taste, which he characterizes, not at the level of judgment as

EDMUND BURKE
BURKE, EDMUND It is too often the case to be a mere accident that men who become eminent for wide compass of understanding and penetrating comprehension, are in their adolescence unsettled and desuItory~ Of this Burke is a signal illustration. He left Trinity in 1748, with no great stock of well-ordered knowledge. He neither derived the benefits nor suffered the drawbacks of systematic intellectual discipline. After taking his degree at Dublin he went in the year 1750 to London to keep terms at the Temple. The ten years that followed were passed in obscure industry. Burke was always extremely reserved about his private affairs. All that we know of Burke exhibits him as inspired by a resolute pride, a certain stateliness and imperious elevation of mind. Such a character, while free from any weak shame about the shabby necessities of early struggles, yet is naturally unwilling to make them prominent in after life. There is nothing dishonourable in such an inclination. I was not swaddled and rocked and dandleci into a legislator, wrote Burke when very near the end of his days: Nitor in adversum is the motto for a man like me. At every step of my progress in life (for in every step I was traversed and opposed), and at every turnpike I met, I was obliged to show my passport. Otherwise no rank, no toleration even, for me.

Biography:
Edmund Burke (1729-1797) was a British statesman and philosopher whose contribution to the philosophy of aesthetics was to argue that our enjoyment of beauty is not based upon any measure of intellectual clarity. Instead, it is based upon our imaginations being engaged by the qualities of obscurity and suggestiveness. Burke is also well known for his book Reflections on the Revolution in France , which is an important statement of conservative political principles and ideas. In it he criticizes the principles behind the social contract theory and argues instead for greater respect for the rights and privileges contained in traditional value systems. The Philosophy of Politics and the Philosophy of Law are often studied separately, but they are presented here jointly because they both come back to the same thing: the study of force. Politics is the study of political force in the general community, while jurisprudence is the study of how laws can and should be used to achieve political and social goals.

EDMUND BURKE .............. BIOGRAPHY .............. Burke, Edmund (1729-1797) British Statesman and Political Thinker: Edmund Burke was a leading British philosopher and statesman who eventually supported the patriots in their bid for independence. Burke initially advocated parliamentary supremacy over the colonies, but only on terms acceptable to the colonies. Two of his speeches to Parliament later became famous: one on American taxation (1774) and one on conciliation (1775). He suggested a relationship between Britain and her American colonies in which parliamentary sovereignty would be asserted only with the consent of the colonies, and only for purposes which the colonies recognized as being of common interest. After the American victory at Saratoga, however, Burke asserted that the American colonies could not be retained.
Burke also wrote books of political and aesthetic philosophy, and was known as an eloquent orator.

Edmund Burke (1729 - 1797)
A statesman, orator and political thinker, Edmund Burke championed conservatism in opposition to Revolutionary France. Born in Ireland, in 1765 Burke entered Parliament and became active in the hot debate over the crown's powers. Burke pressed for parliamentary control of royal patronage and expenditure, in 1782 becoming closely involved with an act regulating the civil list paid by parliament to the crown. Britain's imposition on America of measures including the Stamp Act in 1765 provoked violent colonial opposition. Burke argued that British policy had been inflexible and called for more pragmatism. He believed that government should be a co-operative relationship between rulers and subjects and that, while the past was important, a willingness to adapt to the inevitability of change could - hopefully - reaffirm traditional values under new circumstances. He also maintained a keen interest in India. He concluded that Indian governmental corruption had to be resolved by removing patronage from interested parties. He proposed that India be governed by independent commissioners in London, but a bill to this end was defeated, prompting impeachment proceedings against Warren Hastings, governor-general of Bengal.
