Anthony Burgess (1917-1993)
Anthony Burgess was a diversely talented Englishman whose reputation, lamentably, rests almost exclusively on his best-known (and his least favorite) work, the novel A Clockwork Orange. The 1962 futuristic novel, an impassioned yet even-handed plea for the necessity of human free will, stirred up controversy with its ultra-violent content narrated largely through a Russian-influenced slang of Burgess's invention, "nadsat." The 1971 film version by Stanley Kubrick provoked enough "copycat" crimes - a great irony, considering both the book and film decry unconscious, deterministic acts, yet tolerate evil so long as it is willfully chosen - that Kubrick banned the showing of it in the United Kingdom in 1973 (only recently was the ban repealed). But Burgess was a far more complete artist than A Clockwork Orange suggests. Born John Anthony Burgess Wilson on Feb. 25, 1917, in Manchester, England, to Catholic parents, his mother died of the flu when he was two, and he was brought up by his aunt and later his stepmother. He studied English at Xaverian College and Manchester University and, after graduation in 1940, served in the British Army Education Corps during World War II as the musical director of a special services unit, entertaining troops in Europe. He was an education officer in Malaya and Brunei from 1954 to 1959, adding to the eventual total of nine languages in which he was fluent.

Mein Jahrhundertbuch (36)

Tragically his mother and sister both were killed by Spanish flu whilst he was still a a baby. Young John attended Bishop Bilsborrow Primary School in Moss Side where he was taught by nuns (he later gave up Catholicism), before going to Xavarian College. He later attended Manchester University where he was to meet Llewla Isherwood Jones, whom he was to marry in 1940 before serving six years in the army during the Second World War. He eventually became an education officer in Malaysia and Brunei and was able to speak nine languages! After collapsing in a Malaysian classroom in 1959, Anthony Burgess, was transported back to England where he was diagnosed with an inoperable brain tumor and was given one year to live. He began writing novels to secure posthumous royalties for Llewla. Under the pseudonym of 'Joesph Kell', he wrote

    Anthony Burgess
British novelist, composer, librettist, essayist, semanticist, translator and critic, Anthony Burgess published over 50 books. In a 1973 interview in The Paris Review about the art of fiction, he said, "The ideal reader of my novels is a lapsed Catholic and failed musician, short-sighted, color-blind, auditorily biased, who has read the books that I have read."
His best-known novel, A Clockwork Orange (1962), offered a bleak vision of a violence-ridden future. It follows a murderous, Beethoven-loving teen-age gang leader in complacent and conformist society. Roving bands of delinquents fight, steal and rape to assert their freedom against the conformity of a clockwork society. The brutality depicted in A Clockwork Orange emerged after an assault on Burgess's wife during the war that resulted in the loss of their expected child. She died 1948. The movie version of the novel, directed by Stanley Kubrick in 1971, encountered heavy criticism - some of its violent scenes were said to have inspired real-life violence by gangs of hoodlums - and was eventually withdrawn by its producers and distributors. After graduating from Manchester University in 1940, Burgess joined the British Army Education Corps where he served as musical director of a special services unit, entertaining troops in Europe.
