Kinderbunker Ltd and Soho Theatre in association with Fat Bloke Productions present:
Julie Burchill is Away...
By Tim Fountain, Performed by Jackie Clune, Directed by Jonathan Lloyd
Soho Theatre 6 June - 13 July

Jackie Clune stars as Julie Burchill in the untold story of Britain's wittiest and most controversial newspaper columnist.
Julie Burchill is Away… will preview at Soho Theatre from 6 June with a press night on Monday 10 June at 7.30pm. Created by Tim Fountain, with exclusive access to both Burchill and her writing, Julie Burchill is Away… tells the story of the Queen of Spleen's rise from a Bristol housing estate in the 60's via the Groucho of the 80's to her current home: a Brighton mansion barely furnished save for a bust of Lenin and a heated outdoor pool.
"Poor Martin Amis, if he'd only stuck to writing about smoking, shagging, and snooker he could have been the next Nick Hornby." Julie Burchill is Away… "Thing that nobody faces up to about Daniella Westbrook's coke habit is, she looks better with half a nose than most people look with a full one." Julie Burchill is Away…
Tim Fountain's play about Quentin Crisp, Resident Alien, has won three major awards and will have had 8 major productions worldwide by the end of 2002. Jackie Clune's own show, Bitchin', was a huge hit at last year's Edinburgh Festival and subsequently transferred to the Arts Theatre for a West End run during December 2001. Julie Burchill is Away… is directed by Jonathan Lloyd, Associate Director of Soho Theatre Company, whose previous credits include Jump Mr. Malinoff, Jump and School Play.

New Design » December 07, 2003 Julie Burchill Allison and a bunch of others have commented on this, but Julie Burchill's pair of articles on her resignation from the Guardian is important. In Part II , she gets at the heart of the matter. the EU's racism watchdog recently suppressed a report on the rise of anti-semitism because it concluded that Muslims were behind many incidents. What sort of world do we live in, when racism is "allowed" to be reported only if it comes from the white and the right? What about a stubborn, shimmering little thing called truth I don't care who's doing it - white, brown or pink-and-purple paisley-patterned - if they're picking on the Red Sea Pedestrians, they're wrong 'uns, like all racists. Make no mistake, the Jews are not hated because of Israel; they are hated for their very modernity, mobility, lust for life and love of knowledge. Their most basic toast, "L'chaim!" (To Life!), is a red rag to those who fetishise death because they have failed to take any joy from their life on earth. read more » Part I: Good, Bad and Ugly

Julie Burchill has become even more strident now she's moved to the Times. Her latest piece "How I learnt to love the bomb" starts off: I’ve heard some pacifist claptrap in my time, but Benardo Bertolucci’s recent babble — “An orgasm is better than a bomb!” — really took the biscuit. What, the orgasm of a rapist, a paedophile, or a wife beater is better than a good, honest bomb dropped on a genocidal enemy? Better than the bomb planted by Dietrich Bonhoeffer and his saintly crew, which was meant to kill Hitler? Better than the bombs dropped on Dresden and Cologne which so helped to destroy the blind German faith in their vile war machine and their democratically elected F¼hrer? Really? Oooh! She throws in these comments deliberately designed to sniff out and enrage lefty liberal types. Celebrating Dresden That's, um, going a bit far, isn't it? I'm a bit of a liberal lefty type myself at times, but she carries the whole thing of with such energy that I don't mind. Especially as she's talking about Iraq and is making some solid points: When the war started, I could comprehend why some of those who were against it felt as they did. I could understand that certain racists and xenophobes and grumpy old men believed that the life of one British soldier was worth more than the lives of a thousand Iraqis. I could understand why the Catholic Church was against the war; after all, they above all have shown such great empathy and support for fascist tyrants down the ages. These people were merely being consistent; they didn’t approve of personal freedom in their own countries/congregations, so why should the Iraqis have it either?

Responses to Julie Burchill
Sent to the Guardian Weekend: Much of Ms Burchill's article demands little refute. The question as to how transsexual people live can easily be resolved, simply by talking to the transsexual people who are in our communities, whether as neighbours, teachers, engineers, truck drivers etc. Anyone with their eyes open (and not in a drug induced state of chronic blindness like Ms Burchill) will discover that we live our lives in much the same ways, and with the same variety of styles as do the remainder of the population. Further, that Ms Burchill presumes that all transsexual people are male to female indicates how little she has bothered to read the newspaper she works for. My family and I have been featured on more than one occasion, as have my friends and colleagues who are also female to male, and who live their lives as men. The problem in this field of medicine is like that in all other fields, the post-code lottery that takes place and values some lives above others because of residence. That is what needs addressing. If anyone would really like to know about transsexual people, may I suggest they visit the Press For Change web site at

JULIE BURCHILL IS AWAY...
Soho Theatre + Writers' Centre, London W1
Opened 10 June, 2002
*** Opinionated newspaper columnist now gets recreated on stage At once similar to and different from Tim Fountain's last one-man play Resident Alien , about Quentin Crisp, but entertaining even if you loathe Burchill. Quentin Crisp always sounded as if he was talking in epigrams, so that when Fountain put pieces of Crisp's writing into the mouth of his stage character, it all sounded consistent. The same isn't true of Burchill, who – judging by this 70-minute play – tries extremely hard to sound polished when writing, but in speech just burbles banally. Consequently, when this stage Burchill moves between "spoken" and "written" material, you can hear the gears crash, so to speak. I make no bones about it: I hate Burchill's writing. It seems endlessly, stridently attention-seeking. And I wasn't looking forward to this show. Fountain's writing ducks a few issues – this, like his Crisp play, is an "authorised" work, so he can't alienate his subject. It was astute to cast Jackie Clune as Burchill, though: Clune is particularly skilled at enlisting audience complicity through smirks and a warmth of performance, even when at her bitchiest. Whether the real Burchill is so winning, I don't know, but Clune's version keeps even the "anti" contingent more or less charmed. Written for divento.com

Good point. Clever for capitalism to have arranged things that way, really.

I prefer to think of it as proof-in-my-head that capitalism was invented by the gun companies.

Morrissey mentioned in Julie Burchill's review of Kurt Cobain biography posted by davidt on Monday September 24 2001, @10:00AM
Carlos Blakos
writes:
A new book on Kurt Cobain, "Heavier Than Heaven: The Biography of Kurt Cobain" was reviewed in The Guardian (British Newspaper) on Saturday 22nd September. The reviewer was Julie Burchill, a well-known, controversial music journalist; she used to write for the weekly New Musical Express. Talking about her lateness in following new trends, she says:
"For instance, when I finally admitted to myself that I loved the Smiths, they'd been defunct for five years - something that didn't stop Morrissey, on hearing of my girlish swoon, from knocking on my door unbidden one morning and putting me through three of the most boring hours of my life."
