FREEDOM AND NECESSITY
Tor
383pp/$23.95/April 1997 Reviewed by Steven H Silver There are some books which, no matter how much you want to enjoy them, you just don't enjoy. Steven Brust and Emma Bull's recent collaboration, Freedom and Necessity is one of those novels. Although it has received praise in several quarters, and although it is certainly a more literary novel than many published by speculative fiction authors, Freedom and Necessity comes across as pretentious. The authors are striving to recapture the feel of language as used in the mid-nineteenth century. In this, they are extremely successful. This novel could have easily been written by one of the Bronte sisters. Brust has attempted, and achieved this type of mimicry before in the "Khaavren romances" modeled on Alexandre Dumas's "D'Artagnan romances." In both cases, I would find myself recommending the originals long before I would recommend reading Brust's attempt to recreate them. In style, he has them down nearly perfectly, but Dumas or the Brontes write Dumas and Bronte novels much better than Brust or Bull. Brust and Bull's epistolary novel is set in England, 1849. It opens with the discovery that James Cobham, seen drowned a couple of months earlier by his entire family, is still alive. Acting on the advice of his cousin Richard, James continues to hide from all who know him until they he and Richard have managed to discover who was behind James's mysterious disappearance. This separation of a wealthy Englishman from his source of income and status works much better than the situation set up in Nicola Griffith's novel

Emma Bull
Tor Books 2001
ISBN 0765300346 Originally released in 1987 when it won several awards and supposedly helped kick start the urban fantasy rock and roll subgenre (who knew?), War for the Oaks is an interesting and paranormal take on the Minneapolis music scene of the mid to late 1980’s. Singer and guitarist Eddi McCandry has just ditched her latest band and boyfriend when she is approached by a scary guy who can turn into a dog and informed that she has been chosen to help the Seelie forces in their war with the darker Unseelie forces…whether she wants to or not. The dog man, a phouka, is there to both guard her from secret attacks by Unseelie critters and ensure that she shows up when and where she is supposed to. For you see, having a mortal on the battleground, a special mortal, means that the Seelie and Unseelie folks can actually kill each other. I guess when you live forever you get so bored that death is exciting. But even special mortals must earn a living, and so Eddi starts another band which clicks in a magical way. Turns out it is magical for many reasons, one of which is because Eddi is some kind of special mortal. Did I mention she was special? Well, she is, though why, if Eddi is so special, a band never clicked for her before, I have no idea. Things also start to click with Eddi and her new lead guitar player, also in a magical way. But then there’s that obvious sexual tension and banter between herself and the short, dusky, dark haired, dark eyed, puckish, ruffle and brocade wearing phouka (sound like anybody you know from Minneapolis in the 80’s?). What’s a special girl to do?

Steven Brust and Emma Bull,
Freedom and Necessity
(Tor, 1997)
The idea of reading an epistolary novel is daunting enough, never mind writing one, but Steven Brust and Emma Bull have captured the spirit of the form with style in Freedom and Necessity Set in Victorian England at the close of 1849, the story begins with a letter from James Cobham to his cousin Richard, two months after James' presumed death by drowning. James has no recollection of what has transpired in the intervening two months, but his letters eventually reveal a need for secrecy and subterfuge. Meanwhile, Kitty, James' stepsister and Richard's lover, is in correspondence with another, more distant cousin, Susan Voight, who is determined to track down the events leading up to James' drowning. When she finds him very much alive indeed, she enlists herself in his cause. Using letters and journal from James, Kitty, Susan and Richard, as well as actual articles from the London Times , Brust and Bull create a taut and gripping plot packed with intrigue, secret societies, gun running, social movements, murder and more. The various plot threads range from the political to the prosaic, and they intertwine without a gap. The authors maintain the multiple layers of the plot clearly and cogently, and the reader is easily immersed in the story which, incredibly, transpires over three months. The main characters are vividly portrayed both through their own voices and the descriptions in letters about them. It is fascinating to see the subtle nuances of their personalities rise through the characters' portraits, transforming them from "stock" characters into people so real you would recognize them if you saw them on the street.

Emma Bull,
Finder: A Novel
of the Borderlands

(Tor, 1994)
Life in the Borderlands, where technology and magic mix, is certainly interesting. Created when Elfland returned to the world, the Border is a chancy place where sometimes an engine will work and sometimes it won't. Sometimes a gun will shoot and sometimes it won't. But magic always works. In Bordertown, a city near the Border between the World and Elfland, many of the people, both human and elf, have come to escape their pasts. One such is Orient, whose talent for finding lost things estranged him from his parents. Another is Sunny Rico, a cop. When Rico asks Orient to help her out by finding a drug-runner's murderer, he enters a world even more dangerous than Bordertown can be for the unwary. Nearly blown up not once but several times, Orient finds himself unable to walk away from the puzzle when given the chance, not even when his best friend Tick-Tick comes down with the mysterious epidemic sweeping through the elven population of Bordertown. Worse even than that, he's falling in love with Sunny Rico. The Borderlands were originally created by Terri Windling, and it seems to me that she took the idea introduced at the end of Lord Dunsany's

Name: Emma
Age: One year old
Gender: Female Breed: Pit Bull Home: Oakland, California, USA
E mma is quite an ambassador of her much misunderstood breed. She was rescued from the pound at three months. and is so loving and sweet. She lives with another rescued Rott/Shepherd mix and an old cat. Although the media likes to make horrible headlines about vicious pit bulls, many are like her with responsible owners. She is a great retriever and swimmer and likes to please. Emma isn't much of a watchdog because she loves people so much, even strangers. Her favorite pass times are teasing other dogs with her toys and bones, diving in the bay, and destroying anything stuffed with foam. Her mom was so pleased that she is finally a year old, she threw her a birthday party. Birthday cake is the only thing Emma has ever attacked and the most dangerous thing about her is her strong, whipcord of a tail. Ouch!
Find out how your pet
could be Dog of the Day.

My Book List
This page is generated from my library database, which I generated with a bar-code scanner (with some help from the Web). Yes, I really own all these books. Have I read them all? The vast majority, certainly. In this list, there are probably ten or twenty books that I don't ever intend to read. (Don't ask why I own them.) Another ten, perhaps, are books that I intend to read someday, but have never been in the right mood to pick up. And then there are recent purchases (which may not even be on this list yet). The recent-purchase pile is usually one or two books, but it can reach a height of ten or even twenty if I find a juicy new used-book store or go to a con. Then it shrinks. Any book still unread after a month, if not sooner, qualifies as "read-someday". Do I remember what's in all of these books? Hell no. 1980 books are listed here.
