Territory Chapter 1 It was not quite dawna thin gray light, and no sun's edge to be seen over the Dragoon Mountainswhen the buckskin horse came walking up Allen Street. Its head was low, its dollar-gold hide marked with drying sweat, and its fine black legs caked with dust. The man on its back was in worse condition. He was slumped forward with his face in the tangled black mane, so that no one could have said who he was. His hat was missing, showing hair as straight and black and disarranged as his mount's. On the side and skirt of his brown duster was an ominous spreading dark stain.

During most of this period of residence he has been connected with the "Deseret News." Excepting the times of his absence upon foreign missions, his labors of nearly five years in the Temple, and a few weeks spent with the "Salt Lake Herald" he has been continuously with the "News" since 1852, making him that paper's oldest employee. During this half century of service he has seen the small printing plant brought to Utah by the pioneers grow, and has aided in its growth, until it has become one of the best equipped newspaper plants and publishing establishments in the West. Mr. Bull is a native of Leicester, Leicestershire, England, where he was born January 25, 1832, the son of Daniel Bull and his wife Elizabeth Burdette. As an infant he was left motherless, and at the age of fourteen, having received a common school education, he was apprenticed to a printer, but did not serve out his apprenticeship, owing to the failure of the firm with which he was connected. To perfect himself in the art he moved to Birmingham, where, as he had first class credentials, he soon obtained employment in a leading book and job printing establishment. He retained that situation until December, 1850, when he graduated as a journeyman.

But her boyfriend just dumped her, her band just broke up, and life could hardly be worse. Then, walking home through downtown Minneapolis on a dark night, she finds herself drafted into an invisible war between the faerie folk. Now, more than her own survival is at risk and her own preferences, musical and personal, are very much beside the point. From the back cover of the 1987 edition: A terrible beauty walks among us for those with the power to see it: glittering creatures with unearthly eyes, horrid hobgoblins that squat in the shadows. The people of modern Minneapolis go about their daily business unaware that a war is being fought in their midst an age old war between the Seelie and Unseelie Courts. Only Eddi McCandry can see the battle lines being drawn for she's been drafted into a fairy war, whether she wants to fight or not. Read for group discussion on September 12, 2001

Finder
by Emma Bull
Finder , Emma Bull's latest novel, is set in the shared world of the Borderlands, a city where Faerie and the "real" World overlap with decidedly sordid but entertaining results. Like Steven Gould's Jumper and Crawford Kilian's Lifter (see a trend here?), Finder is about a young man with a nifty but inexplicable power. Orient, a human runaway, finds missing things. When a local drug dealer is murdered, the police hire Orient to help them track down the murderer, who is presumably also the source of a new drug that transforms humans into twisted parodies of Elves. Apparently the police usually don't care about recreational drug use, but the humans who take this new drug invariably sicken and die. With the help of his Elven partner Tick-Tick and the tough-but-predictably- sensitive cop Sunny Rico, Orient wanders around the seedier bits of Bordertown, searching for the drug manufacturers while trying to avoid being blown to pieces. Finder is really just a whodunnit with fantasy trappings, but Orient's finding ability is quite an entertaining plot device. The narration is clever, the dialogue is witty, and even minor characters have a sense of depth and history. (Of course, this is a shared world, and I haven't read any of the previous Borderlands stories, so many of these minor characters have probably been extensively developed elsewhere.) The first half of this book is fast and amusing.

Celtic Inspired Fantasy and SF
Last updated 9/28/2003
How and Why did you create this Booklist?
I created this page because I've gotten so many questions about whether or not various books were based on specific myths, requests for "books like X," and inquiries about modern retellings of Celtic myth. This is not a complete list of Celtic-inspired SF and fantasy; it is very far from such a list. These are books that I've read and liked, an arbitrary and idiosyncratic selection of books that are either directly inspired by particular bits of Celtic myth and folklore, or that, while original, draw on Celtic traditions, myths, and lore. Many of these books are marketed as juvenile or "young adult" novels, but don't let that stop you from enjoying them.
Other Bibliographic Sources
, formerly known as Folk Tales, was a traditional newsletter for more than twenty-five years, before turning digital. Their site is a consistently high quality source about good music (Celtic and English traditional, and related traditions) and really good books. (Thanks to Jasmin for passing the URL to me.)

Tor, ISBN 0-312-85974-0, 1997, 444pp, US$25.95
A book review by Evelyn C. Leeper
The story is set in England of the mid-nineteenth century. Although several reviews have hinted that this is some sort of alternate history, it really seems at most a secret history, if that. Yes, there are real historical figures interacting with the main (fictional) characters, but that does not an alternate history make. So in this historical England, we discover that James Cobham, whom his family thought drowned in fact, saw drownedis in fact alive, though without any memory of what has happened in the months between his "death" and his re-appearance. Though he doesn't actually re-appear in a flourish, but only in secret and to his closest friends. In addition to trying to solve the mystery of James's absence, and avoid a more permanent demise, the characters also discuss Kant and Hegel and the British class system. One might ask at this point why this book is being promoted a s science fiction (or perhaps more accurately, fantasy). The answer is- -I don't know. It seems more because Brust and Bull are known as SF authors than because of any inherent SF aspect to the novel. (I suppose that in itself may constitute a bit of a spoiler.) There are certainly goings on that have fantastical origins, meanings, or referents, but they are (so far as one can tell) completely mundane in actuality. And while there were aspects of the plot that held my interest, the resolution is too pat, too dependent on people acting in seemingly irrational ways, too dependent on people *depending* on people acting in irrational ways. Or, strangely enough, on people acting rationally when one would expect them to act irrationally.
