Bulgakov's Life
Mikhail Afanasievich Bulgakov was born in 1891 in Kiev, today the capital of Ukraine. His father was a professor at the Theological Academy. After finishing high school, Bulgakov entered the Medical School of Kiev University, graduating in 1916. In 1913 he married Tatyana Lappa, who moved with him after graduation to provincial villages, where he practiced medicine. He wrote about his experiences as a doctor in his early works "Notes on Cuffs" and "Notes of a Young Country Doctor." Bulgakov in the University Bulgakov's first wife
Tatyana Lappa In 1918 Bulgakov returned to Kiev, which at the end of World War I and the beginning of the Civil War in Russia was fought over between several forces: the Germans, the Ukrainian Nationalists, the Red Army (Bolshevik), and the White Army (Anti-Bolshevik). Bulgakov's brothers enlisted in the White Army and fled with them, eventually landing in Paris. Bulgakov enlisted as a field doctor with the White Army and ended up in the Caucasus, where he gave up medicine and began working as a journalist. He never left Russia, and was never granted a visa to visit his brothers.

    Introduction
Mikhail Bulgakov worked on this luminous book throughout one of the darkest decades of the century. His last revisions were dictated to his wife a few weeks before his death in 1940 at the age of forty-nine. For him, there was never any question of publishing the novel. The mere existence of the manuscript, had it come to the knowledge of Stalin's police, would almost certainly have led to the permanent disappearance of its author. Yet the book was of great importance to him, and he clearly believed that a time would come when it could be published. Another twenty-six years had to pass before events bore out that belief and

A Suppressed Voice: Mikhail Bulgakov
In his play Don Kilhot Russian author Mikhail Bulgakov writes, "There is much evil on earth... but there is no evil worse than captivity" (Bulgakov, Don Kilhot 238). Bulgakov is reflecting on his own life under dreadful internment during the commencement of Soviet Communism. Throughout this and many other works, Bulgakov becomes frustrated with his situation and portrays these emotions with his pen. Mikhail Bulgakov uses several great literary devices in a remarkable display of anti-Stalinism, while remaining critical of other authors and flatly rejecting inherent parts of society.
Initially, by using unique character names and positions, Bulgakov utilizes symbolism. Every character seems to have a name that holds a definitive purpose, even if it was not intentional on Bulgakov's part (Edwards 151-2). In his work The Fateful Eggs Bulgakov has a character named Rokk, which means "fate" (Zavalishin 331). With this character Bulgakov certainly shows how one has little free will in the direction he will go in life. The majority of Bulgakov's characters have ironic names. He uses the name Berlioz for another character. Berlioz was a composer during the Romantic period, however Bulgakov's Berlioz contrasts every value a Romantic composer would cherish (Edwards 151). Through using representative names, Bulgakov draws the attention of both the reader and researcher a brilliant mechanism he utilizes throughout all of his works.

THE MASTER AND MARGARITA
by Mikhail Bulgakov add to cart INTRODUCTION Why would the devil pay a visit to a contemporary city, and what sort of business would he conduct there? What seems a fanciful premise was perhaps less so for a persecuted writer in the Soviet Union under Stalin. Mikhail Bulgakov completed his novel The Master and Margarita just before his death in 1940, but it remained officially unpublished until 1966, whereupon it achieved the status of an underground masterpiece. Faust , has prepared us for something else; it is a question asked by Faust, answered by Mephistopheles: " '...who are you, then?'/'I am part of that power which eternally/wills evil and eternally works good.' " Insofar as Woland's evil manifests itself in the sudden, menacing disappearance of various characters, as well as the deaths of Berlioz and Baron Meigel, he inevitably reminds us of how Stalin dealt with actual and potential political enemies. But Woland is also a force for good, as evidenced by his orchestration of the reunion of the novel's other central figures the master, an unnamed novelist whose manuscript has been publicly denounced and denied publication, and Margarita, his married lover. Moral ambiguity is central to the novel. As Woland says to Matthew Levi, "what would your good do if evil did not exist, and what would the earth look like if shadows disappeared from it?" (p. 360).

Reality had its revenge. In December 1991 the USSR finally ground to a standstill - as fifty years earlier Mikhail Bulgakov...metaphorically predicted in his fantastic novel The Master and Margarita . Here Mikhail Berlioz...tells a young poet that Jesus Christ never existed; the Devil arrives to say he did.
Malcolm Bradbury, ed. "Russia and Eastern Europe after the Second World War." The Atlas of Literature
The absurdity of the opening scene of Bulgakov's most celebrated novel, The Master and Margarita , is written against the backdrop of Stalinist Russia, 30 years before the notion of postmodernism came to life. And yet, haunting time warps of fantasy and reality, allegory and Mennipean satire, were in the powerful mind of Bulgakov, and it is there that postmodernity touched Russian ground - although, as a movement, it could only have been conceived 'in advanced capitalist culture.' Bulgakov's fame and destiny were as dark and torturous as many of his fellow authors'. A chain of banned works and fluctuations of despair and amputated success, both in theatre and the publishing world, had taken its course. The KGB possessed his early diaries; his manuscripts were accepted but never published in his lifetime; theatres stopped his plays often in the middle of rehearsals. Five years before his death, his only reliable audience was his wife, Yelena Sergeyevna, and his closest friends. Now, how do Russia and the other countries of the former Eastern Bloc cope with the discovery of long awaited words that reflect the uncensored spirit? Bulgakov's testament has since gained an enormous cult status; the most visible proof must be the graffiti shrine at the one time Bulgakov residence in Moscow, no. 10, Bolshaia Sadovaia. His best works, including the famous The Master and Margarita, were not published until after his death. His dramas were struck off the repertoire-The Days of the Turbins at the Moscow Arts Theatre and his plays about Moliere and Pushkin. During his lifetime, not a single major anthology of his short stories was ever published Bulgakov's works have since been recognised as classics; his books have been published in all the languages of the civilised world, studies of him have reached the four-figure mark and the number is still rising; editions of his books in the USSR have run into millions. He has won the highest praise from Gabriel Garcia Marquez of Columbia and Kendzaburo Oe of Japan. Kirghiz writer Chinghiz Aitmatov looks on Bulgakov as his teacher. Mikhail Bulgakov's books have at last come into their own with their wild fantasy and their prophetic ideas about man and humanity. Our collection includes one of his most vivid stories, "The Fateful Eggs".
