T
here has been developed a new Literary Theory incorporating Mikhail Bakhtin's concepts. Based on the principles of philosophical aesthetics, semiotics and narratology, the theory made it possible to address the problem of revealing the hidden content of Mikhail Bulgakov's works including his famous novel The Master and Margarita . The theoretical aspects and their practical implementation in decoding the inner structure (i.e., the hidden content) of similar works created by W. Shakespeare and A. Pushkin are discussed elsewhere on the WEB (see the index below). This page contains the text of my book M. Bulgakov's novel The Master and Margarita: an everlasting love or a literary mystification? A short version of the work was published in 1996 ( The Novels Eugene Onegin and The Master and Margarita ... : a Tradition of Literary Mystification : 1996, Kiev

Bulgakov, Mikhail The Steel Windpipe
Genre Short Story (8 pp.) Keywords Anesthesia Children Illness and the Family Infectious Disease ... Surgery Summary A little girl is brought to the rural hospital by her father, who throws himself at the feet of the young doctor, "Please do something to save my daughter!" It seems that she has been suffering from a sore throat and is now having difficulty breathing. The doctor looks into her throat; diphtheria is evident. At first he scolds the father for not having brought the girl earlier. Then he suggests surgery: a tracheotomy. The doctor knows this is the only way he might save the child, but he is consumed by anxiety because he has never performed the procedure. At first the father objects to surgery, but then relents. The tracheotomy is successful and the child survives. Commentary Bulgakov was sent to a country hospital like the one in this story (without having done an internship) after graduating in medicine from Kiev University in 1916. He spent 18 months in this difficult, isolated practice, before returning to Kiev to specialize in venereal diseases. This tale, like his other "doctor stories," was written in the mid-1920's, after Bulgakov gave up medical practice for a career in writing. It presents a gripping portrait of a young doctor being initiated into the rigors and responsibilities of his profession. The clinical situation in this tale is reminiscent of that in William Carlos Williams'

    PREFACE
Mikhail Bulgakov in the Western World (A Bibliography) reflects the holdings of the Library of Congress - books, pamphlets, and microforms - by and about Bulgakov. Because many of these works are unknown in Bulgakov's native land, the European Division of the Library of Congress has compiled the present bibliography of selected works from the West with the intention of reaching a wide range of readers, librarians and researchers in the former Soviet Union and the West. The bibliography includes some translations that are not held by the Library of Congress because of collection policies concerning translations with languages other then English. This bibliography attempts to depict the wide spectrum of interest by researchers in Bulgakov's role in the world - not only his influence on his contemporaries but his continuing influence. It is intended for researchers, librarians, bibliographers, bibliophiles, and for all those interested in the intellectual and spiritual heritage of the Russian and Ukrainian nations. The material in the index is divided into six chapters. In the chapter

Bulgakov, Mikhail Afanasyevich [m E kh u y E u f u u u f] Pronunciation Key Bulgakov, Mikhail Afanasyevich , Russian novelist and playwright. He wrote satirical stories ( The Deviliad, 1925, tr. 1972) and comedies ( Zoe's Apartment, 1926) and the long novel The White Guard (1925, tr. 1971), in which a Kievan family hostile to the revolution is sympathetically and realistically portrayed. He condensed and dramatized this as The Days of the Turbines (1926, tr. 1934). The satirical and philosophical novel The Master and Margarita (tr. 1967, 1995) is considered his most important book; it was not published until a censored edition appeared in 1967 (other versions were published in 1973 and 1989). He worked intermittently on this fantasy, which concerns Satan's visit to Moscow, from 1928 until his death. His other novels include The Heart of a Dog (1925, tr. 1968). Bulgakov was officially criticized for several of his works.

Z by birthday from the calendar Credits and feedback Mihail Bulgakov (1891-1940) Russian journalist, playwright, novelist, and short story writer, whose major work was the Gogolesque fantasy The Master and Margarita . In the story the Devil visits Stalinist Moscow to see if he can do some good. The book is considered a major Russian novel of the 20th century. It first appeared in savagely censored form in the Soviet journal Moskva in 1966-67. Bulgakov also used satire and fantasy in his other works, among them the short story collection Diaboliad The naked man pushed his way to the front, tapped with his nail on the bronze bonnet and said:
"Here, comrades, we have a remarkable character. A notorious harlot of the first half of the 19th century.. ."
The lady with the stomach turned purple, took her young daughter by the hand and quickly drew her away.

(from 'The Fire of the Khans') Mihail Bulgakov was born in Kiev. Ukraine as the eldest son of a theology professor at the Kiev Theological Academy. He attended First Kiev High School (1900-09) and studied then medicine at Kiev University (1909-16). From 1916 to 1918 he served as a doctor in front-line and district hospitals. These experiences he described in notes of a young doctor, 'Zapiski yunogo vracha' (1925-26). In 1918-19 Bulgakov worked as a doctor in Kiev, and witnessed the German occupation and then the occupation by the Red Army. During these war years he suffered from a morphine addiction, but was helped by his first wife to win the addiction. In 1920 Bulgakov abandoned medicine in favor of a career as a writer. He organized in Vladikavkaz, Caucasus, a 'sub-department of the arts', wrote stories for newspapers and moved to Moskow in 1921. There he worked for the literary department of the People's Commissariat of Education, writing as a journalist for various groups and papers. His largely autobiographical novel BELAYA GVARDIYA (1925, full text 1966, The White Guard) was an account of the turbulent years between 1914 and 1921 as reflected in the lives of a White family in the Ukraine. Two parts of the work was published in the journal
