"Somebody at one of these places asked me: "What do you do? How do you write, create?" You don't, I told them. You don't try . That's very important: not to try, either for Cadillacs, creation or immortality. You wait, and if nothing happens, you wait some more. It's like a bug high on the wall. You wait for it to come to you. When it gets close enough you reach out, slap out and kill it. Or if you like it's looks, you make a pet out of it."

The Dignity and Depravity of Emotion
in Charles Bukowski's Barfly
An essay by Jay Dougherty "I photograph and record what I see and what happens to me. I am not a guru or leader of any sort. I am not a man who looks for solutions in God or politics. If somebody else wants to do the dirty work and create a better world for us and he can do it, I will accept it. In Europe where my work is having much luck, various groups have put a claim on me, revolutionaries, anarchists, so forth, because I have written of the common man of the streets, but in interviews over there I have had to disclaim a conscious working relationship with them because there isn't any. I have compassion for almost all the individuals of the world; at the same time, they repulse me." Charles Bukowski1
aken from one of the last interviews of length that Charles Bukowski gave, this quotation underscores one of the primary paradoxes of his ideology: a simultaneous repugnance toward and attraction to the characters that populate his work. One manifestation of this ambivalent attitude surfaces in Bukowski's representation of his characters' emotive responses. Emotional outlet, depending upon the degree to which it is allied to or removed from a knowledge of "reality" as Bukowski depicts and understands it, can be either ennobling or debasing. And nowhere in the Bukowski canon does this attitude find better expression than in

ANTI-HERO ART
founder/curator/webmaster Robert W. Howington discovered Charles Bukowski through the movie BARFLY . On the credits it said he wrote the screenplay. Fully impressed with the incredible movie, he kept Buk's name in his memory. Then he saw a book with his name on it: HOLLYWOOD . He instantly bought it. Read it in hours. Went out and bought all of his other works he could get my hands on. An entire wall of his apartment is dedicated to all of Buk's stuff: a bookshelf with all
to get to the stuff that's not on this page or on the Buk grave and bronzed head pages. And Missouri poet Michael Hoerman has, at Howington's request, written a terrific essay on Bukowski about what the great man means to him. The Bukowski Tribute pages consists of letters, poems, fiction, stories and articles written by fellow Buk enthusiasts who had submitted their work to Howington years ago for the planned Xeroxed Buk tribute book. Howington rifled through his Buk book file (4 inches thick) and picked out the stuff he thought worthy of on-line publication.
to see a scan of one of the letters Buk wrote to Howington. In it he totally rips on Neeli Cherkovski's weak biography

37. Authologies: Charles Bukowski
Pr©sentation biographique et critique.
http://authologies.free.fr/bukowski.htm
Charles Bukowski (1920-1994)

    Charles Bukowski
Charles Bukowski was born in Andernach, Germany on August 16, 1920 and came with his family to the United States when he was three years old. He grew up in poverty in Los Angeles, drifted extensively, and for much of his life made his home in San Pedro . Bukowski had been a writer since childhood, published his first story at age twenty four, and began publishing poetry when he was thirty-five. Bukowski is generally considered to be an honorary "beat writer" , although he was never actually associated with Jack Kerouac Allen Ginsberg , and the other bona fide beats. His style, which exhibits a strong sense of immediacy and a refusal to embrace standard formal structure, has earned him a place in the hearts of beat generation readers, and the contributers to the alt.books.beatgeneration newsgroup. He was a prolific (it isn't known how much he had written; much of it was sent off to publishers long-hand and never seen again), free-formed, humorous, and painfully honest writer. His topics included hang-overs, the shit stains on his underwear,
