1998 Fantasy and Science Fiction for Children and Young Adults a list compiled by Laura Krentz From COWS AND CATS AND SEALING WAX in Once Upon a Time , a children's fantasy apa, ed. by Laura Krentz. used by permission The following is a list of 1998 books which I have either seen or seen reviewed. They appear to be science fiction or fantasy, including some ghost stories or time travel stories. I included very few picture books (we can cover them more thoroughly later), and few paperbacks. I did not include paperback reissues of older books, so someone may want to share a list of Harcourt Brace and other titles. But this should be enough to get you started in hunting for possibilities for the Mythopoeic Fantasy Award, or for holiday gift ideas. The * indicates that the book is poart of a series. Somoe titles that look especially interesting are the Dalkey [reviewed by Laura in Once Upon a Time ], Jones, Lyefsky, Napoli [likewise reviewed], Rowling, and Springer. I just started reading the Rupp book, and it reminds me of the good old fantasies of Edward Eager or David and the Phoenix by Edward Ormondroyd.

The Young Adult Canadian Book Award: Have You Heard About It? By Nancy E. Black
Chair. Book Award Committe of the Young Adult
    Services Interest Group,
    Canadian Library Association
    Volume 17 Number 2
In the past fifteen years or so there has been a growing interest in and recognition of Canadian literature for young adults. Many of us have observed the development of this genre with both an enthusiastic and an evaluative eye. It was this excitement about Canadian young adult literature that prompted the Young Adult Caucus of the Saskatchewan Library Association to create the Young Adult Canadian Book Award. Established in 1980, it is intended to "recognize the author of an outstanding English language Canadian book which appeals to young adults between the ages of 13 and 18." This award would not only focus on and draw attention to Canadian young adult fiction, but also promote Canadian authors and publishing companies: "the title must be a Canadian publication in either hardcover or paperback, and the author must be a Canadian citizen or landed immigrant." The first recipient of this award was Kevin Major for his excellent young adult novel about a Newfoundland family entitled Far from Shore . Other winners over the years have included O.R. Melling for The Druid's Tune, Mary-Ellen Lang Collura for Winners and Janet Lunn for

    Volume 20 Number 6
    1992 November
Sixteen-year-old Jess and her parents buy and move to a guest ranch in Alberta. Her family is trying to recover from the death of Jess's little brother Scotty. Jess's father is pretending nothing out of the ordinary is happening. Jess is coping by working very hard on the ranch and by trying to make some sense of what is happening around her. Jess's mother is retreating into her own world, where it seems that no one can reach her, no one except the "ghost" of a little boy that she keeps seeing. Jess's mother thinks that boy is Scotty, but Jess thinks otherwise and gathers as much evidence as she can to prove it. The reader is familiar with the ghost because, as the story of Jess and her family unfolds, so does the story of Ian Shaw and his family. The author simultaneously tells the two stories. We are introduced to Ian through his journal, in which he records his life as a crippled boy living in the early 1900s on the same Alberta ranch. Ian's main problem is not his injured leg, but his strong-willed mother, who keeps him a virtual prisoner in his own room. The two stories merge when both families face disaster. Jess's mother is about to slip into the oblivion of her own world when Jess decides to tell her the story of Ian Shaw and to show her his journal. Jess's mother is angry at having her own delusion of the ghost being Scotty shattered. But when Jess and her mother confront their true feelings, they become reconciled. They also help Ian and his mother forgive each other when, in a rare instant past and present coincide. Ian and his mother can now rest in peace, while Jess and her family can get on with their lives, despite their grief.
