ANTIQUARIAN BOOKSELLERS CATALOGUES
Incomplete, catalogued but useable runs of catalogues of selected American, English and Continental antiquarian booksellers are kept by the Department. Access is through those servicing the General Rare Books Collections (The catalogues are stored in RECAP). The Library no longer adds to these runs of dealer catalogues, chiefly because of lack of staff and shelving to keep them current. The latest issuance date we are likely to have for any dealer in the following list is 1991. The following prominent dealers are kept selectively: Brick Row Book Shop, Dawsons (London), Edward Eberstadt (also available in a reprint in the open stacks of Firestone), Francis Edwards, Goodspeed's, Gilhoffer and Rauschburg, L.C. Harper, E.P. Goldsmidt, Maggs Brothers, H. P. Kraus, Pickering and Chatto, B. Quaritch, H. Reichner, A.S.W. Rosenbach (also available in an indexed reprint in the open stacks of Firestone) A. Pearl Buck The Good Earth novel cover Essay Topics and Critical Commentary Essay Topics Identify the most significant symbol in the novel and justify your choice. State one possible theme of the novel, and support your position. Give your opinion on why The Good Earth is considered an important novel in the canon of world literature, and why it was seminal in the nomination of Buck as a Nobel Prize winner. Appraise a significant conflict in the novel, and judge its thematic importance. Instructor's Recommendation: A basic tenet of the novel seems to be that virtue and hard work are rewarded. Yet, the riches that are brought back from the South (truly a turning point of the novel) are acquired through "chance" and trickery. Similarly, at the end of the novel, the roots established by Wang Lung will obviously be pulled up as the land is sold and divided by the sons. Are these events consistent with the novel's message that "virtue and hard work are rewarded"? Pearl S. Buck (1892-1973)
Buck at about the time she was awarded the Nobel Prize in 1938 Pearl Buck, who won both the Pulitzer and Nobel Prizes, was one of the best known and most widely read American novelists of the twentieth century. She was also an adoptive parent, a prominent early critic of racial and religious matching , a thorn in the side of the child welfare establishment, and an advocate of special needs, transracial , and international adoptions The child of Protestant missionaries, Buck spent the first half of her life in China and the second half living in the United States. Her formative experience abroad led her to write prolifically about Asia for western audiences and work tirelessly on behalf of international humanitarianism and intercultural understanding. She was a multiculturalist who hoped to dignify Chinese history and make cultural difference understandable for Americans. But she was also a champion of civil rights who believed that the human story was fundamentally universal. After her first marriage, to John Lossing Buck, Pearl give birth to a

Beloved by millions of readers, The Good Earth has been one of the most popular novels of this century since its publication in 1931. The book won the Pulitzer Prize and the William Dean Howells medal for fiction. For over 30 years, Pear Buck's novel played a major role in shaping Western attitudes toward China. Born in Hillsboro, West Virginia, in 1892 to an ill-matched pair of Southern Presbyterian missionaries, Pearl Sydenstricker was taken to China at the age of three months and lived there for forty years. A rarity among white american writers, she spent her childhood as a minority person, an experience that had much to do with her lifelong passion for interracial understanding. Raised in Chinkiang, a small port city in Kiangsu province, by the time she was four she spoke and wrote Chinese as well as English. Upon her mother's insistence, Pearl was educated at Randolph-Macon Women's College in Lynchburg,Virginia. In 1917 she married Lossing Buck, a Cornell Graduate working in China, and spent the next several years in Nanhsuchou, a barren rural village, home to several thousand impoverished farmers. She became intimately familiar with the daily lives of China's poorest inhabitants, and a decade later the village would provide the primary setting for her first stories of China, including The Good Earth . She would publish over seventy books during her long, productive career, including many bestsellers, but
