Buck, Pearl Sydenstricker [s I u u r] Pronunciation Key Buck, Pearl Sydenstricker , American author, b. Hillsboro, W.Va., grad. Randolph-Macon Women's College, 1914. Pearl Buck was awarded the 1938 Nobel Prize in Literature. Until 1924 she lived principally in China, where she, her parents, and her first husband, John Lossing Buck, were missionaries. She is famous for vivid, compassionate novels about life in China. The Good Earth (1931; Pulitzer Prize), considered her finest work, describes a Chinese peasant's rise to wealth and brilliantly conveys a sense of the daily life of ordinary Chinese people. Among her other novels of China are East Wind: West Wind Dragon Seed Imperial Woman (1956), and Mandala (1971). In 1935, she married her publisher Richard J. Walsh, president of the John Day Company. In 1949 she founded Welcome House, which provided care for the children of Asian women and American soldiers; the Pearl Buck Foundation of Philadelphia, to which she consigned most of her royalties, aids in the adoption of Amerasian children. Her more than 85 books include works for children, plays, biographies, and works of nonfiction, such as China As I See It See her autobiography

Pearl S. Buck
Biographical Information
East Wind, West Wind was published in 1930, while she was still living in China. She followed that book with the Chronicles of the Family Wang, The Good Earth Sons (1932), and A House Divided (1935). It was The Good Earth that first brought Pearl Buck to the attention of the world, winning her the Pulitzer Prize and the William Dean Howell Medal. After her divorce in 1935 from John Buck, Pearl married her publisher, Richard Walsh, and the couple moved to Green Hills Farm in Bucks County, PA. From here, Pearl Buck would write more than 100 more books before her death in 1973. Her work brought numerous awards and recognitions, including the honor of becoming the first American woman to be awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature (1938). Pearl Buck was more than just an author, even a great one, though. In her lifetime, she was recognized as a noted humanitarian, particularly concerned with the rights of women and children. She founded Welcome House, Inc., an international agency set up to promote the adoption of Asian-American children, now part of the Pearl S. Buck International Foundation, an organization "committed to making the world a more humane place for its children by promoting the appreciation and understanding of other cultures through education, adoption, and support." She used her work to bring attention to the inferior status of women in traditional China. Because of her experiences with her daughter Carol, whose story is told in

Three Daughters of Madame Liang (Buck, Pearl S. Oriental Novels of Pearl S. Buck, 4th,) > Customer Review #1: A family divided by the Cultural Revolution

"The Three Daughters of Madame Liang" was Pearl S. Bucks last major novel and it holds its own with the best of her work. In Madame Liang, Buck has created a fascinating character, a woman who is very much her own person. After doing the very un-Chinese thing of leaving her husband when he takes a concubine, which he claims is his right because his wife has produced no son, Madame Liang determines to make her own way in the world and opens a gourmet restaurant that caters to the high and mighty of the Peoples Republic (even good Communists appreciate good food). She has not only survived, but thrived, by keeping a low profile and providing her customers with the best. But she has sent her three daughters, Grace, Mercy and Joy, to America to be educated; and now, after many years separation, Grace has been called home by her government to serve the new society.

East Wind: West Wind (Buck, Pearl S. Oriental Novels of Pearl S. Buck, 8th,) > Customer Review #1: Insightful and romantic...

This was a quick and easy read told in the first person through the eyes of a Chinese woman. Also its clear that the writers own loyalty to the Western thought of romantic love is all over this story. It is this notion that ultimately drives the narrator to give up her old ways and accept the new. Buck describes how difficult it is for one to accept change in age-old rituals. Although many of the traditions are seen as unnecessary, foolish or just plain sadistic, its difficult to question them after growing up in a culture where these traditions have been practiced for thousands of years. The narrator is a good vehicle to show how upsetting, confusing and frustrating it can be to incorporate these changes into ones life. Time and time again the theme of the generation gap is revealed, showing how many people simply cannot be changed.

Buck, Pearl
(Hillsboro, Virginie, 1892 — Danby, Vermont, 1973).

Buck, Pearl S. The Enemy
Genre Short Story Keywords Acculturation Asian Experience Medical Ethics Physician Experience ... War and Medicine Summary An American-trained Japanese surgeon working in Japan during World War II, pulls a wounded American sailor, presumably an escaped POW, from the surf behind his home. Against the advice of his wife, he hides the sailor, operates on him, and preserves his life temporarily. Becoming fearful for his family, he reports what he has done to his patient, an official in the Japanese military. The officer says he will arrange to have the American assassinated in order to spare possible retribution against Sadao, the surgeon, and his family. It doesn't happen, and Sadao is left with determining how to rid himself of this hazard he has brought into his home and healed. He makes a series of decisions that lend themselves to widely varying interpretations in terms of his motivation. Commentary This story raises the high-level moral questions about ethics in the time of war. Does one's obligation to country supersede obligation to family? To self? To patient? When is a patient a patient, and when is he an enemy to be treated as threat? How are ethical principles prioritized when they are in conflict of this nature? And, in terms of the story itself, how does one examine the motives that drive Sadao to make his decisions? Are they virtue-based? Based in his culture as Japanese or his culture as surgeon? Or are they totally self-serving?
