Difficulty, my brethren, is the nurse of greatnessa harsh nurse, who roughly rocks her foster-children into strength and athletic proportion. The groves were God's first temples. The right to discuss freely and openly, by speech, by the press, by the pen, all political questions, and to examine and animadvert upon all political institutions . . . is a right as clear and certain, so interwoven with our other liberties, so necessary in fact, to their existence that without it we must fall at once into despotism and anarchy. Truth, crushed to earth, shall rise again. He [William Henry Harrison] did not live long enough to prove his incapacity for the office of President.

    TO A WATERFOWL
    by William Cullen Bryant
While glow the heavens with the last steps of day,
Far, through their rosy depths, dost thou pursue
Might mark thy distant flight to do thee wrong,
As, darkly painted on the crimson sky,
Of weedy lake, or marge of river wide,
Or where the rocking billows rise and sink
Teaches thy way along that pathless coast,
    The desert and illimitable air,
At that far height, the cold thin atmosphere: Yet stoop not, weary, to the welcome land, Soon shalt thou find a summer home, and rest, And scream among thy fellows; reed shall bend Hath swallowed up thy form; yet, on my heart Deeply hath sunk the lesson thou hast given, Guides through the boundless sky thy certain flight, In the long way that I must tread alone

Bryant, William Cullen (1794-1878) Noted poet and long-time Editor in Chief of the New York Evening Post, Bryant purchased a country house in Roslyn in 1843. "Cedarmere" as it was called, remained in the family until the 1970's, when it was willed to Nassau County. Although Bryant continued to commute to New York City, he was also active in Roslyn affairs. In the early 1870s he purchased land and built a Reading Room for the people of Roslyn. At his death in 1878, the Bryant Library Association was formed, and the building and land were turned over to the Association by his daughter, Julia. Books by and about Bryant, as well as letters, photographs and clippings about Bryant, the library and Cedarmere can be found in the library's Local History Collection.

The son of a learned and highly respected physician, Bryant was exposed to English poetry in his father’s vast library. As a boy he became devoted to the New England countryside and was a keen observer of nature. In his early poems such as “Thanatopsis,” “To a Waterfowl,” “Inscription for the Entrance to a Wood,” and “The Yellow Violet,” all written before he was 21, he celebrated the majesty of nature in a style that was influenced by the English romantics but also reflected a personal simplicity and dignity. Admitted to the bar in 1815 after a year at Williams and private study, Bryant practiced law in Great Barrington, Mass., until 1825, when he went to New York City. By that time he was already known as a poet and critic. He became associate editor of the New York Evening Post in 1826, and from 1829 to his death he was part owner and editor in chief. An industrious and forthright editor of a highly literate paper, he was a defender of human rights and an advocate of free trade, abolition of slavery, and other reforms. He also holds an important place in literature as the earliest American theorist of poetry. In his

After realizing that a career in poetry was a practical impossibility, he undertook a long and successful career in magazine publishing. First, as an editor at the New York Review and Atheneum Magazine and then most significantly as the editor-in-chief at the Evening Post . His editorials for the Evening Post helped make it one of the most respected newspapers in the country. Back to Ephemera home Back to BoxCameras.com home

Title : Thanatopsis Poet : William Cullen Bryant Date : 26 Dec 1999 To him who in the lo... Length : Text-only version Prev Index Next Your comments on this poem to attach to the end [ microfaq rmukund@ Thanatopsis William Cullen Bryant From: thanatopsis is a confusing poem, can you explain it better? From: you think you can send my a summary, or a site where i can find a summary ASAP? well thank you. Anthony From: Perlinger@ From: "Thanatopsis" is a poem about veiws of death. The reader is supposed to be less frightened by the aspects of death because in the end everyone is one (Unitarian) in Nature which also refers to God because Romantics beleived that in order to get closer to God there was no middle man . They felt that by surrounding themselves in Nature they could "communicate" with God. The poem also disestablishes social classes ans ranks because death is the equalizer and nobody is better than anyone else. I don't know if this helped any but if you e-mail me back I explain more and I might be able to answer some questions. From: It's Romanticism because William Cullen Bryant is a romantic and fireside poet. There was actually a time period in literature that refers to romantics. They believed in Unitarian ways, which means that God and Nature are one. They thought that there shouldn't be a middle such as a preacher or anything and that a church could only be a bnuilding, that to really be cl ose to God you should surround yourself and invoke in Nature. I hope this helps some.If not you can mail me back if you'd like
