WILLIAM CULLEN BRYANT
BRYANT, WILLIAM CULLEN At the age of twenty-six Bryant married, at Great Barrington, Miss Frances Fairchild, with whom he enjoyed a happy union until her death nearly half a century later. In the year of his marriage he suffered the bereavement of his fathers death. In 1825 he ventured to lay aside the practice of law, and removed to New York City to assume a literary editorship. Here for some months his fortunes were precarious, un.til in the next year he became one of the editors of the Evening Post. In the third year following, 1829, he came into undivided editorial control, and became also chief owner. He enjoyed his occupation, fulfilling its duties with an unflagging devotion to every worthy public interest till he died in. 1878, in the month of his choice, as indicated in his beautiful poem entitled June. and was made a royal city by Ottakar II. in the 13th century. In 1421 the Hussites were defeated here by King Sigismund and the Saxons, and in 1426 besieged the town in vain. In 1456 George of Podbrad captured the town and castle, which hadfor some time been occupied by the Saxon princes. BRYANT, JACOB

Classroom Issues and Strategies
Most of the Bryant selections in the anthology are ruminative poems about the nature of life and the nature of nature. Some students really like this sort of thing, but substantial numbers are allergic to it. The most effective strategy I have found is to provide visual back-up in the form of a Hudson River School slide show. A fancy version would parallel English Romantic poets (especially Gray, Cowper, and Wordsworth) and painters (e.g., Constable and Turner). Bryant is a fine example of a writer who was not only popular but famous in his day. He can be used to open a discussion of the social and historical implications of such popularity (why it comes and why it goes), the essentially political character of anthologies (yes, even this one), and the idea of "fame" in connection with contemporary poets and poetry. For students (and they are many) who do not naturally respond to Bryant, the questions generally run to "Why are we reading this?" Or, more decorously, "Why was he so popular?" Yet, they do respond to him as an example of how the American high culture invented itself. In an altogether different vein, the personal philosophy expressed in "Thanatopsis" has some enduring appeal.

Selected Poems of William Cullen Bryant
An Indian At The Burial Place Of His Fathers
My father's ancient burial-place,
Ere from these vales, ashamed and weak,
Withdrew our wasted race.
Of which our old traditions tell.
For here the upland bank sends out
A ridge toward the river-side;
I know the shaggy hills about,
The meadows smooth and wide,
The plains, that, toward the southern sky,
Fenced east and west by mountains lie.
A white man, gazing on the scene,
Would say a lovely spot was here,
And praise the lawns, so fresh and green,
Between the hills so sheer.
Lay in its tall old groves again.
The sheep are on the slopes around,
The cattle in the meadows feed,
And laborers turn the crumbling ground,
Or drop the yellow seed,
And prancing steeds, in trappings gay,
Whirl the bright chariot o'er the way.
Methinks it were a nobler sight
To see these vales in woods arrayed,
Their summits in the golden light,
Their trunks in grateful shade,
And herds of deer that bounding go
O'er hills and prostrate trees below.
And then to mark the lord of all,
The forest hero, trained to wars

William Cullen Bryant
Born in Cummington, Massachusetts, William Cullen Bryant was the son of a country doctor who served several terms in the Massachusetts State Legislature and was both a stern Calvinist and a strict disciplinarian. Dr. Bryant’s library, which contained at least seven hundred books, provided Bryant with a formidable basis for his copious early reading, reading which apparently began when he was sixteen months old. At thirteen, Bryant was sent to live with an uncle so that he might begin to study Latin and Greek and he learned so rapidly that at sixteen he entered Williams College as a sophomore. Despite his wish to continue working towards a classical education, Bryant was compelled by family financial circumstances to leave college during his first year and he reluctantly turned to the law, reading for the bar in Worthington and entering practice in Plainfield, Massachusetts, at the age of twenty-one.
Bryant’s precocity was evident also in his early poetry. At thirteen, he wrote an anti-Jeffersonian poem called “The Embargo” after the manner of the seventeenth- and eighteenth-century satires of Dryden and Pope. Even though the political sentiments of the poem probably owed more to his father’s opinions than to any political views young Cullen might claim, the poem so impressed Dr. Bryant that he had it printed in the

Born: November 3, 1794, in Cummington, Massachusetts, United States Died: June 12, 1878, in New York City, New York, United States William Cullen Bryant was an American poet whose works were often based on themes of nature. In his poetry, Bryant often used nature to represent God. He felt that, as a poet, he was obliged to improve the moral values of his readers, and consequently his work is frequently criticized for its pedantic, moralistic tone. Bryant's father was Peter Bryant, a physician, and his mother was Sarah Snell Bryant. The family lived in the house of the Snell grandparents. Bryant grew up with the diametrically opposed views of his Unitarian father, a member of the state legislature, and his grandfather, a stern Calvinist farmer and a deacon of the local church. His parents tutored him in Greek and Latin at an early age, and he spent many hours absorbed in books from his father's library. When he was only thirteen years old, Bryant published his first work

On the life of Thomas Cole
A funeral oration delivered before the National Academy of Design, New York, May 4, 1848 By William Cullen Bryant GENTLEMEN OF THE ACADEMY: Kindred Spirits by Asher B. Durand
Let me ask those who hear me to accompany me in a brief review of his life and his principal works. Thomas Cole was born in the year 1802, at Bolton, in Lancashire, England. He came to this country with his family when sixteen years of age. He regarded himself, however , as an American, and claimed the United States as the country of his relatives. His father passed his youth here, and his grandfather, I have heard him say, lived the greater part of his life in the United States. Two of the pictures of which I am speaking are in the exhibition opened for the benefit of his family since his death. They are not equal to his later works, but they arc skilful, faithful and original, and these qualities, once pointed out, made them the subject of general admiration. in one of the earlier editions of his poem entitled The Vanity of Human Wishes, Johnson thus enumerates the calamities incident to the life of a scholar :
Toil, envy, want, the garret and the jail.

Illustration : The Mountain House] ABOUT one hundred and forty miles from the sea, on the western bank of the Hudson, the chain of mountains which under various names, stretches from the banks of the St. Lawrence to Georgia and Tennessee, throws out a broken link toward the cast. Clustering closely together, these isolated mountains, to which the early Dutch settlers gave the name of "Catskills," approach within eight miles of the river, and, like an advanced bastion of the great rocky wall, command the valley for a considerable distance, and form one of the most striking features in the landscape. On the western side, they

The beauties of the Clove and the Falls of the Kauterskill have been immortalized by Irving and Cooper and Bryant, passing into the classics of American literature, and awakening in the genius of Cole its loftiest inspiration. After such illustrators, the task of describing the charms of this beautiful group of mountains would seem to be as difficult as the attempt were presumptuous: but a few notes may, perhaps, be useful in explanation of some of the sketches made by Mr. Fenn in this shrine of summer pilgrimage.
