As a young boy in the 1860s in Salem, Illinois (the same small town in which Abraham Lincoln studied law and John Scopes studied high school biology), Bryan dreamed of becoming a preacher in the Baptist Church of his father. Witnessing his first baptismal immersion at age six, however, changed his career plans. Bryan later claimed that his fear of water was so great that it led to his decision to leave the Baptist Church and become a Presbyterian at age fourteen.
Bryan He enjoyed books and outdoor sports. Bryan excelled in school, and graduated as the valedictorian and class orator from Illinois College He married a college sweetheart, Mary E. Baird, during his first year at the Union College of Law in Chicago Six years later, the young lawyer and his wife moved to a place Bryan saw as the land of opportunity, Nebraska
In 1890, just three years after settling in Nebraska Platte His election to Congress came as a surprise; he became the first Democratic congressman in Nebraska After two terms in Congress

William Jennings Bryan on Imperialism
By Jim Zwick
Photograph of William Jennings Bryan
A lthough often described by scholars focusing on presidential politics as the champion of the anti-imperialist cause, William Jennings Bryan (1860-1925) had an uneasy relationship with the organized anti-imperialist movement. Unlike many other Democratic politicians, he never joined the Anti-Imperialist League. In 1898 and 1899, while the League was organizing opposition to ratification of the Treaty of Paris, Bryan supported ratification. The National Liberty Congress of Anti-Imperialists held by the League in August 1900 urged support for Bryan during the presidential campaign that year but his position on the Treaty of Paris, his financial policies, and his relationships with racist Southern Democrats alienated many anti-imperialists. Thomas Mott Osborne , Oswald Garrison Villard, John Jay Chapman and others tried to organize a third party opposed to both William McKinley's imperialism and Bryan's free-silver financial policy. Unable to recruit a prominent anti-imperialist Republican to head the ticket and failing to gain support from the Anti-Imperialist League, that movement collapsed. Many other anti-imperialists voted for McKinley in 1900, though, as the League was unable to make imperialism the "paramount issue" of the campaign while Bryan was the Democratic presidential candidate. Bryan remained a controversial figure, but the Democratic Party consistently supported Philippine independence in its campaign platforms and the Anti-Imperialist League endorsed the party in every presidential campaign from 1900 to 1920.

William Jennings Bryan (1860-1925) was a Congressman from Nebraska, three-time presidential candidate (1896, 1900, and 1908), and later Secretary of State under President Woodrow Wilson.
In 1896, Bryan faced an uphill battle as the Democratic and Populist nominee. Democrats had held the White House for the previous four years and were widely blamed for the severe economic depression of 1893. Furthermore, sitting President Grover Cleveland disapproved of Bryan's nomination; many Democrats abandoned the party to form the Gold Democrats , or to vote for McKinley . Bryanwho barely acknowledged his nomination by the Populistsdecided the best strategy for Democratic victory was to bring his message to the people by speaking around the country, often from the backs of railroad cars. This was a new tactic, since presidential candidates traditionally stayed home and let others speak on their behalf. It won Bryan both criticism and fame.
The text below is from Great Leaders and National Issues of 1896 , published during the campaign. Such biographies were popular, both to introduce candidates to the voters (though

, politician. Called the "Boy Orator" for his skills as a public speaker, Bryan served in the U.S. House of Representatives from 1891 to 1895, where he advocated the free coinage of silver at a fixed rate with gold of 16:1. When he was nominated for president by the Democratic and Populist parties in 1896, his Cross of Gold speech at the Chicago convention earned him national fame. He lost the election but was nominated again by the Democrats in 1900 and 1908 and was defeated each time. Bryan served as secretary of state from 1913 to 1915 under Woodrow Wilson, but resigned in protest over America's involvement in World War I. A Christian fundamentalist, Bryan was the prosecuting attorney at the Scopes trial in 1925. He died shortly after the trial ended.

    The Man with the Hoe
    By William Jennings Bryan
New York Journal, rpt. The Commoner Condensed (New York: The Abbey Press, 1902). The Democratic candidate for the presidency in 1896 and 1900, William Jennings Bryan (1860-1925) was the most prominent national political figure identified with the populist cause at the turn of the twentieth century. Both the San Francisco Examiner, in which "The Man with the Hoe" first appeared, and the New York Journal were owned by William Randolph Hearst. I t is not strange that Edwin Markham's poem entitled "The Man with the Hoe" created a profound sensation. It is a sermon addressed to the heart, and its lesson is not limited to any nation, race or clime. It voices humanity's protest against inhuman greed. There is a majestic sweep to the argument, and some of the lines pierce like arrows: Is this the Thing the Lord God made and gave To have dominion over sea and land; To trace the stars and search the heavens for power; To feel the passion of Eternity?

William Jennings Bryan William Jennings Bryan fused Populist rhetoric and policies with a new Democratic coalition. In the process became one of Nebraska's and the nation's favorite sons. But, like many early Nebraskans, he was born somewhere else in Illinois in 1860. His father was a lawyer and local politician. Both of his parents were intensely religious, and young William shared their fervor. At the age of 12, he joined the fight for prohibition of alcohol by signing a temperance pledge for school. After high school, attended law school in Chicago and worked in the office of Lyman Trumbull, Abraham Lincoln's friend and a U.S. Senator. Shortly after Bryan began is own law practice, he married Mary Elizabeth Baird. He discovered Nebraska when he visited a law school friend in Lincoln after inspecting land in Iowa owned by his father-in-law. He saw Nebraska as a land of opportunity, and so Bryan moved to Lincoln and set up practice in partnership with his law school friend. William Jennings Bryan in full oratorical splendor. You can see a video history of Bryan's career here . You'll need the QuickTime Player In 1890 just three years after coming here he decided to run for Congress as a Democrat. He was a long shot. No Democrat had ever been elected to Congress in the 20 years of statehood. But Bryan had realized that common people were in desperate financial times, and the Populist Party was probably at the height of its popularity. Bryan picked up some of the same ideas as the Populists. He won the election and became the first Nebraska Democratic Congressman. Bryan won a second term in Congress in 1892.

IF IT IS RIGHT for the United States to hold the Philippine Islands permanently and imitate European empires in the government of colonies, the Republican Party ought to state its position and defend it, but it must expect the subject races to protest against such a policy and to resist to the extent of their ability. The Filipinos do not need any encouragement from Americans now living. Our whole history has been an encouragement, not only to the Filipinos but to all who are denied a voice in their own government. If the Republicans are prepared to censure all who have used language calculated to make the Filipinos hate foreign domination, let them condemn the speech of Patrick Henry. When he uttered that passionate appeal, "Give me liberty or give me death," he expressed a sentiment which still echoes in the hearts of men. Let them censure Jefferson; of all the statesmen of history none have used words so offensive to those who would hold their fellows in political bondage. Let them censure Washington, who declared that the colonists must choose between liberty and slavery. Or, if the statute of limitations has run against the sins of Henry and Jefferson and Washington, let them censure Lincoln, whose Gettysburg speech will be quoted in defense of popular government when the present advocates of force and conquest are forgotten.
