The Sun, the Moon, and the Stars
(Ace, 1987; Orb 1996)
Like Charles de Lint's Jack of Kinrowan The Sun, the Moon, and the Stars was originally published as part of Terri Windling's series of novel-length fairy tales rewritten for adults. Tor republished it under the Orb imprint, which means that it should remain in print as an Orb book. (Would that the rest of the series would follow!) Greg, the narrator, is an artist who has joined with four other artists Dan, David, Robert and Karen in a studio, where they have been struggling to make names for themselves in the art world. They have all been largely unsuccessful, and they have come to a crisis point; should they call it quits and break up the studio or should they try to come up with the money for an art show? The stress takes its toll, and communications break down severely. This is only one of the stories Steven Brust tells. Another storyline follows Greg through the process of creating a painting on a huge canvas he calls The Monster. As Greg works his way through the painting, he reflects on art and painting and what it means to him personally. Interspersed through the novel is a Hungarian folk tale, "The Sun, the Moon, and the Stars," which tells of three gypsy brothers who go on a quest to bring light to the world. Actually, only one brother does all the work, Csucskari, who is a kind of trickster-hero, but he's willing to share with his brothers. The different narrative threads are broken into numbered sections within each chapter, and each chapter is headed with the title of a famous painting. It is not obvious whether the painting has a bearing on the text of the section, although some readers might enjoy looking them up. Greg is an engaging narrator, and his ruminations on art are fascinating. This "inner" narrative enriches the outer story, restoring balance and providing insight to the conflicts among the artists.

@import url(http://goblinhead.com/booklist/booklist.css); Heather's Book List The Sun, the Moon, and the Stars Brust, Steven (Author) Read May 04, 2004 Beginnings are difficult times. There's so much there. Potential, of course. And uncertainty, along with his older brother, fear. Excitement. Setting out blind is the worst, as well as the best.
When you work this way, you're opening yourself up completely. You're working from your soul, and if those you respect ( and, at least as important, those who don't know you from Adam) don't like it, there's no way around it: it is your soul they don't like. It comes back as fragments now... all of the late-night talks, when you're not stoned, but you're so tired you might as well be, when you just sit there glowing with warmth, and all of these things that you really hope for come out, and you connect with each other on such deep levels that, when you think about it the next day, you wonder if it was real- if the others felt it too. I want to do more than just paint a pretty picture; I want there to be some substance to it, something about life, about nature, about people. I want someone to be able to look at one of my paintings more than once; more than twice even, and continue to find things in it. I want people to say, "Yeah, I've seen that, but I didn't really notice it was like that before."
But you can't just impose "meaning" and "significance" onto a painting, like adding vodka to a punch. It's either in you or it isn't. The joke is, though, that you can't know if it is or it isn't unless you work at it. You work at it by trying as hard as you can, to

Steven Brust, The Sun, the Moon, and the Stars (Ace, 1987)
Boiled in Lead, Songs From The Gypsy (Omnium, 1995) Once upon a time, there was an author named Steven Brust, who wrote The Sun, the Moon, and the Stars for the Fairy Tales series, edited by Terri Windling. It was an odd novel, more like a short story, a novella, and a commentary on art, merged into one. The novel was written from the point of view of Greg Kovacs, a struggling artist, who shared studio space with four other struggling artists. The four of them had hoped that working together would provide mutual inspiration for them to become successful artists, who could make a living at what they loved. Unfortunately, three years without success, whether due to lack of time, luck, or skill (the artists weren't sure which) left them uncertain of their future and on edge. They started to clash and argue about their art, their plans for the future, and just themselves. They considered shutting down the studio and going to work in the real world. But they also considered putting together an exhibit of their work as one last chance to be noticed. At the same time, the friendships began to fall apart, Greg started a painting on "The Monster," a huge piece of canvas he had bought to celebrate his one and only sale. Intertwined with this story was the fairy tale of the Gypsy boy, Csucskari, and his brothers, Hollo and Bagoly, and how they set out to put the sun, the moon, and the stars into the sky a fairy tale apparently told by Greg to his friends.

It's not absolutely necessary to have read The Three Musketeers before reading this book, but it would certainly help. Likewise with Brust's previous Vlad Taltos series of books. The book takes place in Dragaera a while before the Interregnum, the time of chaos just ended in the Vlad Taltos books. Dragaeran lifespans being what they are, there's at least one character in common, and also the parents of others. The ostensible 'writer' of the book is Paarfi, a post-Interregnum historian whom Brust deliberately writes in the style of Dumas, or rather of Dumas's translators. He is almost another character in his own right. One might get a bit impatient with his style, but others will probably find it delightful. (The Author's Note at the end he writes about Brust is nothing short of hilarious.) Like in Dumas, the action rarely slows down. Before they go on the mission that takes up the bulk of the book, things get a bit slow as we spend time showing what the villains are up to, but after that it takes off and continues flying. This is the first of a planned trilogy, the other two books also intended to parallel Musketeer books

A New Generation of Heroes in Dragaera: Steven Brust's The Paths of the Dead
    Reviewed by Christopher Cobb
T he English professor in me knows that this would be the wrong way to begin a review: " The Paths of the Dead is a great book, but to really appreciate it there are twenty other books you should read first." That's the sort of thing that I say to my students about great literature, not the sort of thing you're supposed to say about an entertaining fantasy novel. And besides, it isn't true. There are seventeen other books you should read: the nine books in Brust's Vlad Taltos series, his stand-alone novel Brokedown Palace the first two of his Khaavren romances (of which Paths is the next installment), and the five volumes of Alexandre Dumas's D'Artagnan romances, upon which the Khaavren romances are based. Although readers unfamiliar with Brust's work would enjoy Paths of the Dead most fully if they would read these other seventeen books first, I think that readers unfamiliar with any of them could pick up this book and enjoy it greatly, if they're looking for stylistically playful and intellectually serious heroic fantasy. Since I've been reading Brust's Dragaeran novels and romances for eighteen years, maybe I'm not one to judge that. But I can say that The Paths of Dead lives up to the high standard set by the earlier Khaavren romances, and Brust remains one of the most interesting writers of heroic fantasy.

    Visions of Steven Brust
    Tales of Vlad Taltos
Some of the most original fantasy I have read in years. I picked up Jhereg on the spur of the moment and the only regrets I have had since are the waits between new bo. An interesting world, with a very rich history, and fascinating characters. The fact that the main character is an assassin is icing on the cake. The next Vlad novel, Issola , is scheduled as an April book from Tor.
    Dragon
Vlad is back. If you are a fan, that is all that is needed. If you aren't a fan, why not? The newest book in the Vlad Taltos series is pretty much like the others. An involved, intricate plot, interesting characters, solid writing, and when it is all over, a desire to see more of the same. This chapter in Vlad's life is one of the earlier ones, dealing with the battle of Barrit's Tomb. While this answers some questions that have been posed in the earlier books, Steve also manages to hint at other things that you want to learn about. The only downside for the readers is the fact that this is the first Vlad book in hardcover. If that means more coming in the series though, it is worth it.
