Robert Browning - Biography
Glenn Everett , Associate Professor of English, University of Tennessee at Martin
Robert Browning was born on May 7, 1812, in Camberwell (a suburb of London), the first child of Robert and Sarah Anna Browning. His mother was a fervent Evangelical and an accomplished pianist. Mr. Browning had angered his own father and forgone a fortune: the poet's grandfather had sent his son to oversee a West Indies sugar plantation, but the young man had found the institution of slavery so abhorrent that he gave up his prospects and returned home, to become a clerk in the Bank of England. On this very modest salary he was able to marry, raise a family, and to acquire a library of 6000 volumes. He was an exceedingly well-read man who could recreate the seige of Troy with the household chairs and tables for the benefit of his inquisitive son. Indeed, most of the poet's education came at home. He was an extremely bright child and a voracious reader (he read through all fifty volumes of the Biographie Universelle ) and learned Latin, Greek, French and Italian by the time he was fourteen. He attended the University of London in 1828, the first year it opened, but left in discontent to pursue his own reading at his own pace. This somewhat idiosyncratic but extensive education has led to difficulties for his readers: he did not always realize how obscure were his references and allusions.

Kirby Wright Aloha! I'm a writer from Hawai'i and I'm going to be sharing some of my poetry and stories. I've been published in literary magazines and university journals across the country. E Komo Mai! ALOHA, LILI'UOKALANI Queen Lili'uokalani, where is our aina? My memories are a mixture of slack key, plumeria, and Kona wind in the trees. I measure the trades with a desperate tongue. Kapiolani is a park. Kaiulani is a hotel. It is no longer enough to watch the winter tide test the persistence of shores. Lili'uokalani, do you see what I see? Do you see my Hyatt uniform drying on a balcony overlooking H-1 Freeway? Honolulu windows burn a thousand suns. But it keeps on raining out at sea. The rain comes warm, unexpected. Do you, Queen Lili'uokalani, hold back tears for what you lost? Did you carry your grief into heaven? Paradise falls to us in pieces, pieces governed by the highest bidders. Their blueprints cover sacred land with walls. Walls to protect investments. Walls to exclude the less fortunate. Walls to keep Hawaiians out.

I count life just a stuff to try the soul's strength on. It is best to be yourself, imperial, plain and true. Man partly is and wholly hopes to be. My sun sets to rise again. O lyric Love, half angel and half bird. And all a wonder and a wild desire. The Lark's on the wing;
The snail's on the thorn;

-All's right with the world! Truth lies within ourselves: it takes no rise from outward things, whatever you may believe. There is an inmost center in us all, where truth abides in fullness and to Know rather consists in opening out a way whence the imprisoned splendor may escape than in effecting entry for light supposed to be without. What I aspired to be and was not, comforts me. What Youth deemed crystal, Age finds out was dew.

    Robert Browning
    Robert Browning was born in Camberwell, a suburb of London. Young Robert spent much of his time in his father's private library of 6000 volumes in several languages. The chief source of his education
    Browning became an admiror of Elizabeth's Barretts poetry in 1844. He began corresponding with her by letter. This was the start of one of the world's most famous romances. Their courtship lasted until 1846 when they were married. The couple moved to Italy that same year and had a son, Pen, later in 1849.
    Robert did not become recognized as a poet, until after Elizabeth's death in 1861. After which, he was honored for the rest of his life as a literary figure.
    Robert is perhaps best-known for his dramatic monologue technique. In his monologues, he spoke in the voice of an imaginary or historical character. Robert had a fondness for people who lived during the Renaissance. Most of his monologues portray persons at dramatic moments in their lives.
    Below is a picture of Robert Browning's grave. He is buried in Westminster Abbey, in Poet's Corner.

    Browning, Robert
    English poet, especially noted for perfecting the dramatic monologue (literary composition in which the speaker reveals his or her character).
    In 1846 Browning married the poet Elizabeth Barrett (see Elizabeth Barrett Browning). Because of her ill health, worsened by the English climate, they made their home in Florence, Italy, in the palace later made famous by Elizabeth's poem, Casa Guidi Windows. There he wrote Christmas Eve and Easter-Day (1850) and a series of dramatic monologues, published collectively as Men and Women (1855), which included "Fra Lippo Lippi" and "Andrea del Sarto," studies of Renaissance artists.
    Following Elizabeth's death in 1861, Browning returned to London, where he wrote Dramatis Personae (1864) and what is regarded as his masterpiece, The Ring and the Book (4 vol., 1868-1869). Concerning the events of a 17th-century Italian murder trial, the Ring is an extended dramatic monologue among a number of characters and has been praised as a perceptive psychological study. This was the first poem that brought Browning widespread fame.
    In 1878 Browning returned to Italy, where his only son made his home. During this last period he wrote the prose narrative Dramatic Idylls (1879 and 1880) and Asolando, which appeared on December 12, 1889, the day he died in Venice. Although his wife's reputation as a poet was greater than his own during his lifetime, Robert Browning today is considered one of the major poets of the Victorian era. He is most famous for the development of the dramatic monologue, for his psychological insight, and for his forceful, colloquial poetic style.
