Black Issues Book Review
May, 2001 by Houston A. Jr. Baker
The scholar and poet Sterling Brown stamped American poetry with the music of the black vernaculart The way of the black vernacular whose forms, manners, functions, rhythms, and intonations Brown brilliantly mastered is, perhaps most cogently, the way of memory. The vernacular puts supreme value on instructively simple, often nameless, acts of winter kindness, and necessity. Brown was reared in the ways of hard, southern labor and rigorous black aspiration for a better life. His father's heritage was as immediate as southern slavery in Virginia. But the senior Brown made his way upward by attending both Fisk University and the Oberlin Theological Seminary. Hence, the son Sterling A. Brown, was heir to intellectual ambitiousness, black middle-class manners, and an inescapable long black southern memory. The son's trajectory carried him from the Washington, D.C. of his birth to Williams College (where he was awarded Phi Beta Kappa honors) then to Harvard University for an MA. His first job was at Virginia Seminary in Lynchburg, where he taught for three years. That job proved equivalent to a magical, spirited, on-the-ground initiation into the ways of vernacular southern blackness. Absorbing the speech patterns, lore, legends, myths, and manners of the country folk who lived around the seminary, Brown discovered nearly the entire stock of his poetical repertoire.

Celebrating Sterling Brown Poet Roland Flint welcomes poet Michael S. Harper (editor of The Collected Poems of Sterling Brown ) for reminiscences about the late (1901-1989) great, and greatly loved Howard University professor. A poet of wide learning, rich humor and deeply moral vision, he was also a profoundly knowledgeable fan of jazz and the blues. In 40 years of teaching, Brown's notable students included writers Amiri Baraka, Lucille Clifton, and Toni Morrison. Critic Harper reads and comments on five Brown poems: " Odyssey of Big Boy ," " Long Gone ," " Slim in Hell ," " Puttin' on Dog ," and " Conjured ." The final poem, " After Winter ," heard in Brown's own voice (courtesy Smithsonian/Folkways), recalls his father at the Howard County farm on Whiskey Bottom Road where the poet spent summers as a boy. (Originally recorded in 1994). Back

HENDRICKS, STERLING BROWN (1821-1909). Sterling Brown Hendricks, lawyer, soldier, and politician, was born near Courtland, Alabama, on July 21, 1821. He grew up in Mississippi, where he studied law and was admitted to the bar before he moved to Texas in January 1841 and settled at Washington-on-the-Brazos. After his return from the Somervell expedition qv in 1842, he taught school in Bowie County and later established a store in Elysian Fields. Hendricks represented Harrison and Panola counties in the House of the Ninth Legislature, 1862-63, and at the end of his term entered the Confederate Army as captain of a company from Harrison County. He was elected lieutenant colonel when the unit became Company E of Col. George F. Moore's qv Seventeenth Texas Cavalry. While Hendricks was commanding the regiment in Louisiana, Pendleton Murrah qv appointed him financial agent of the Texas penitentiary. Hendricks was a merchant, a farmer, a Presbyterian, and a Mason in Harrison County after the war. He died on December 11, 1909. His narrative, "The Somervell Expedition to the Rio Grande, 1842," was published in the Southwestern Historical Quarterly in October 1919.

Web Page: http://www.ku.edu/~english/tidwell.htm Many prominent writers of the New Negro Renaissance acknowledged the importance of folk culture, but few besides [Sterling A.] Brown, Zora Neale Hurston, Langston Hughes, and Jean Toomer committed themselves to exploring the various contours of rural southern black life and thought, particularly as it responds to the pressures of modern Western culture. Mark A. Sanders, Afro-Modernist Aesthetics This course explores how Langston Hughes, Zora Neale Hurston, and Sterling A. Brown have persisted as "major" voices in the canon of African American writing, and how their work has inspired generations of subsequent writers.  The bases for the course derive from their views on the role(s) folk and vernacular traditions play in African American identity formation.  Against an American literary and social history of misrepresentation and stereotypes, these three authors countered with "authentic" racial representations of African Americans, which they located in the lives, language, and lore of Black folk.  What this means in the context of their poetry, essays, short fiction, novels, autobiographies, and drama is the purpose of this course.

Afro-Modernist Aesthetics and the Poetry of Sterling A. Brown
Mark A. Sanders Sterling A. Brown’s poetry and aesthetics are central to a proper understanding of African American art and politics of the early twentieth century. This study redefines the relationship between modernism and the New Negro era in light of Brown’s uniquely hybrid poetry and vision of a heterodox, pluralist modernism. Brown, also a folklorist and critic, saw the Harlem Renaissance and modernism as interactive rather than mutually exclusive and perceived the New Negro era as the dawning of African American modernity. Reading Brown’s three collections of poetry in light of their respective historical contexts, Sanders examines the ways in which Brown reconfigured black being and created alternative conceptual space for African Americans amid the prevailing racial discourses of American culture. Brown’s poetics call for revised conceptions of the Harlem Renaissance, black identity, artistic expression, and modernity that recognize the range, depth, and complexity of African American life.
