Brown, Rosellen How to Win
Genre Short Story (15 pp.) Keywords Children Disability Family Relationships Illness and the Family ... Survival Summary Narrated in the form of journal entries, a mother struggles to cope with a hyperactive child and "its" disruptive effect on her daily life and household. Home and school and the walk between are the microcosm in which the story is set. She fluctuates between distancing herself from her sonhe is barely human"'It' is what races around my room at night, a bat, . . . ", could not even be her own"I gave birth to someone else's child," and desperate attempts to understand how the world must appear to him, to account for his behavior. One day she not only walks him to school but accompanies him to his classroom. She sees how the teacher has relegated him to the back of the room "for the special inattention of the aide"; then watches with horror as her son causes a multi-child collision and the children retaliate by stomping on his neck. "Every day they walk on his neck, I see that now, but he will never tell me about it." In this defining moment she sees how, in order to survive, her son allows his spirit to be broken, day after day.

March 6th
By Rosellen Brown
Helen, a carton of nachos in her hands, saw Walker startle. Damn, she thought, what's he staring at out there? Which one of those mop-headed, plastic-faced, anorexic little mares is he looking to ride? "What's the matter, darlin'?" she asked, slipping her arm into his and running her perfumed hand very slowly down his ponytail. "You look like you're seeing your dead grandma down there." She tried to feed him a chip but the golden syrup, the anti-cheese, splattered on his shirt and he slapped at her hand. She felt desperation rise in her like the bubbles of her Diet Coke. This one, she thought, cannot, must not, get away! The last couple she'd turned to in her campaign to make Georgebob jealous had made for the exits all too fast: the Xerox repairman had oiled her cartridge and boosted her toner once and only once, and the boss's son, that rugged mountain of a man-in-grayish-blue, home from West Point between semesters, was such a baby, she felt like his mama teaching him to tie his sneakers. There was no dignity in seducing innocents. But Walker, with his owl-like glare and his lariat-rope muscles, ah, she had to distract him from that filly down on the field. Georgebob had shouted at her as she left for work this morning, "'Nothing will come of nothing!'"

    Questions plague Streep's latest
    By Jen Petlinski
    Daily Film Editor
Rosellen Brown's bestseller deserves more. Her novel captures the struggle of an ordinary family and the murder that threatens to tear them apart. And unfortunately, director Barbet Schroeder's big-screen version of "Before and After" can't do the same. Carolyn, a doctor, and Ben Ryan, an artist, are your average parents. Mom comes home from the office each day to Dad and their kids, Jacob and Judith. All four sit around the dinner table and discuss their problems Mom had a headache at work that day, Dad couldn't come up with an idea for his sculpture, 17-year-old Jacob got a C on his algebra test and Judith got in a fight with her friends at recess. One day, their lives just stop moving. Martha Taverner, a girl in town, is found face down in the snow, dead. After her death, both Carolyn and Ben find out that, not only was Jacob dating her, but he was also the last to be seen with her, making him the key suspect in her murder. Jacob runs away from home and Carolyn and Ben must look beyond everything they know to find the truth. In the process, both parents must make their own decisions on how they might save their son.

The Day That Changed It All
Before and After by Rosellen Brown
    Reviewed by Jeremy Schmidt
I n Rosellen Brown's novel Before and After she shows us how one event, one day, can change a family, and even an entire town, forever. When a 17 year old girl (Martha Taverner) is viciously murdered in the small town of Hyland, New Jersey, many questions are raised. Did her boyfriend Jacob Reiser who mysteriously disappeared after the murder kill her? Or was it one of the many guys whom she had been with and cheated on? Finally this novel asks, how far will some people go to protect family, and how far will others go to protect the truth? While the police search for Jacob, the Reiser family falls to pieces. Brown presents the family and the three views of the other three family members. Jacob's 13 year old sister does not know what to do when her sweet, caring and loving brother is accused of murder. So, she secludes herself from the family, her friends and her life. Carolyn, Jacob's smart but stubborn mother, refuses to believe her boy could have committed this horrendous crime, and tries to continue a normal life. She believes Jacob has been kidnapped by Martha's killer and hopes the police will be able to find him. Ben, an artist with a short temper, believes in his own son's guilt and hopes Jacob is able to elude the police. When witnesses say they saw Jacob pick Martha up the day of the murder, Ben decides to check the car. When he finds a car jack covered in blood and hair he believes Jacob used it to smash Martha's head. Later when he finds a pair of Jacob's gloves with blood on them he jumps to conclusions. He burns the gloves, takes apart the jack, and hides the pieces. A feud breaks out when he decides to tell Carolyn what he's found. Carolyn thinks: "How did he know he hadn't destroyed something that would lead them to wherever Jacob was hidden?"(p.46). In other words, how does he know he didn't destroy something that would lead to Jacob's innocence? Nonetheless, Ben refuses to stop trying to protect his son.

Review by Rosellen Brown Claire Messud÷young, fiercely intelligent, and well versed in not-so-recent history÷is a one-woman refutation of every charge this aging curmudgeon has laid against the current generation of television scriptwriters masquerading as fiction writers. She is neither minimalist nor wiseass; philosophically oriented, she writes with the kind of patient, exhaustive pleasure in detail, whether of scene, character, or background, that typifies a natural novelist. Messudâs first novel, When the World Was Steady, which confidently set down a middle-aged British woman in Bali, was a finalist for a PEN/Faulkner award. If it werenât a second book and that competition for first fiction only, The Last Life would get my vote for this yearâs prize. The last life is the one lived by the LaBasse family that they cannot surmount or escape, as witnessed and experienced by Sagesse. Sagesse at fourteen may not be as wise as her name promises, but she certainly becomes so by the time her adult voice tells us the story of the stubborn grip of her familyâs history on her own. If it is true, as has been said, that the great story of this century is the immigrantâs tale, then we must add The Last Life to the list of melancholy, postcolonialist witnesses. It suggests that exile is not a matter for the single generation that experiences it, but a color that spreads into the future like a stain that will not wash out, even after time and circumstance have bleached away its particulars.
