B C D ... Z by birthday from the calendar Credits and feedback Fredric Brown (1906-1972) One of the most ingenious American crime and mystery writers, who published science fiction to overcome - as he said - the too real aspect of detective fiction. Brown also wrote television plays for Alfred Hitchcock series. Brown's plots were inventive, he used often humour and paradoxes, and his sex scenes were gleefully provocative. 'Once I said to him I needed a model for an antagonist in one of my stories and was trying to think of someone I really hated. "Wrong," he [Fredric Brown] said. "Base your villain on someone you like. That'll give him some sympathetic traits and make him much more believable."' (from 'My Friend Fredric Brown' by Walt Sheldon in The Big Book of Noir , ed. by Ed Gorman et al., 1998) Fredric William Brown was born in Cincinnati, Ohio. He was educated at University of Cincinnati night school, and Hanover College, Indiana, where he studied one year. From 1924 to 1936 he was an office worker, and then a proofreader for the Milwaukee Journal . He also became a member of Milwaukee's Fictioneers Club, along with

Fredric Brown
"There are no rules. You can write a story, if you wish, with no conflict, no suspense, no beginning, middle or end. Of course, you have to be regarded as a genius to get away with it, and that's the hardest part convincing everybody you're a genius."
Frederic Brown According to his wife, Fredric William Brown hated to write. So he did everything he could to avoid it-he'd play his flute, challenge a friend to a game of chess, or tease Ming Tah, his Siamese cat. Plotting was a stickler, too. If Brown had trouble working out a certain story, he would hop on a long bus trip to nowhere and just sit and think and plot for days on end. But when Brown finally did return home and plant himself in front of the typewriter, Jesus! the man did it all! Hardboiled mystery, paradoxical sf, short fantasy, black comedy-and sometimes, all of the above. That's what makes Brown's work so damned fun. He crossed genres like a demon, plotted like a madman, and continually stretched the boundaries of any given genre into his own strange, private geography. His career began in the mid-1930s, while working as a proofreader for the

significant writing, Fredric Brown is finally beginning to get his due as one of the
most brilliant science fiction and mystery writers in the 20th century. While Brown
was well known and highly regarded in his lifetime, particularly by his fellow
authors, his name has not usually been mentioned with those writers of the first rank
(e.g. Heinlein, Bradbury Chandler etc.) from the so-called “golden age” of pulp fiction. There are several possible reasons for this regrettable omission: First, most of his best work came in the form of short stories, and even "short shorts," a form practically invented by Brown, which consisted of caustic, witty tales of only a page or two in length such as these . Brown was also an experimental stylist of the first rank, and much of his work may have been too strange and too sophisticated for a mainstream teen-age SF/Mystery audience. Paradox is the primary theme of much of Brown’s work, and he was constantly looking for new ways to tell tales, (For example, "Don't Look Behind You," a classic murder mystery in which the reader is the victim, or

Stewart Masters, 3874 Tiffany Ln., Hermitage, PA 16159, $29.99 (0-9718185-0-9). Why is one out-of-print crime writer rediscovered and another, equally deserving, left to languish? Why Jim Thompson but not Fredric Brown? The answers to questions like that breed just the kind of bitter irony on which both of these masters of pulp fiction thrived. Thankfully, ambitious small-publisher Stewart Masters has begun a project that could take Brown’s name off the unfairly forgotten short list. This volume—part 1 in the projected seven-volume Fredric Brown Mystery Library, which will bring all of Brown’s mystery fiction back into print—collects four of the author’s Ed and Am Hunter novels (the remaining three will make up volume 2). There are some major differences between Brown and Thompson. Brown is far less a classic noir writer than Thompson; his stories are not nearly as dark and perverse, and his style is far more polished. Brown was a craftsman plying his hard-boiled trade, whereas Thompson was an open wound bleeding on the page. The Ed and Am Hunter novels star a nephew (Ed) and uncle (Am) who begin as amateur sleuths but eventually become professional detectives. Of the four novels collected here—

SDM: 8206399 [A 4] [Bibliogr.: p. [190].] [Yvon Allard]
