    An Old Gravel Road
    by
    F. William Broome
    Narrow winding rolling or level,
    life is enhanced
on a country road to adventure,
    toward new vistas without destination,
    a path to special places
unrecorded in the heart until now.
A walk down a rugged lane
    rewards with discoveries
not seen on highways, unfolding beauty of roadsides may include small creatures inviting quiet entry into their worlds. A walk down an old gravel road is to travel in time, seeing yesterday and tomorrow, exploring offerings of nature's domain enhanced by man's regard for what is right. A primitive path is more than a way to get there.

DOMESDAY This Manor ought to pay 30d to Curry ( Rivel ), a manor of the King's. The following is taken from Collinson's history of Somerset (1791) :' In Domesday book this place is written Aiselle, and is there said to be held by Robert, Earl of Morton, being one of the many manors which he obtained from his brother the Conqueror in this county. In the said record it is thus particularized: " Malgar holds of the Earl Aiselle. Two thanes* held it in the time of King Edward, and were rated at five hides. The arable land consists of 5 carucates**. In demesne are two carucates, and four villanes***, and seventeen cottagers with two ploughs. There are forty acres of meadow. Dawn over Roebuck Bay Broome
Fascinating port on the western edge of the continent

There's an argument that says that a few years ago Broome might as well have been renamed McAlpine because Lord Alistair McAlpine so dominated the townscape and the economy of the town that he may as well have his name attached to a town that was virtually his personal fiefdom. For example, at the time, two of the town's most interesting buildings - Matso's Store and Captain Gregory's House which are located on the corner of Dampier Terrace at the end of Carnarvon Street - were both restored and relocated by him. In fairness McAlpine had converted this pearling port (with all the temporariness and roughness that such a description implies) into a very attractive town. He had attracted government money to the town and had built a holiday resort at Cable Beach which was far removed from the day to day problems of the town. Of course nothing lasts forever and today the influence of Lord McAlpine has almost disappeared from the town. Modern Broome is a strange, isolated township which has lost a lot of its frontier charm. The new Broome, located on Roebuck Bay 2200 km north of Perth, is a kind of larger, more prosperous, and more complex, version of Port Douglas. Fortunately it has not been as commercialised as its Queensland equivalent.

Known Relatives: Osgood and Rachel Rathaway (parents, deceased)
    Occupation: Social Activist
    Past Group Membership: Rogues' Gallery
Base of Operations: Central and Keystone Cities
    Hair: Reddish Blonde
    Eyes: Blue
First Appearance: Flash (first series) #106
Born deaf, Hartley Rathaway was eventually cured of his disability by research funded by his multimillionaire father. He became obsessed with sound, but seemed to have ambition for nothing else in life, spoiled by his parents' lavish lifestyle. He started experimenting with the science of sonics in his early teens, and eventually perfected hypnotism through music. This life was too easy for Hartley, so he turned to crime to relieve his boredom. As the Pied Piper, he had many clashes with the second Flash After Barry Allen's death, the Piper abandoned crime in favor of socialism and a new role as a provider for the poor. He once joked that he was the only super-villain he could think of who was gay, making it ironic that he's one of the few rogues who have "gone straight." In fact, he is a good friend of Wally West , the current Flash, and his wife Linda , often helping Wally on cases with his scientific skills.
